Gammons also works for NESN, the sports network owned and operated by the Fenway Sports Group, the owners of the Boston Red Sox.

I'm curious to see how Matt Flynn's free agency starts today. I would think that the Dolphins would be interested in him if they miss out on Manning, but Manning isn't going to make a decision today and Flynn might not be willing to wait for Peyton's decision and Flynn could decide to sign with Cleveland or Seattle. If Miami misses out on Flynn and Manning there won't be many options left and they may end up making a major reach in the draft and going with Ryan Tannehill with the #8 pick.

Sure hope Flynn gets his payday and is successful in the league as a starter.

I'm really excited for my buddy about this. He has first rounders every year, then some second, third rounders, and of course guys after that. This will be a different situation, though. Talk about a long-term payoff. I'm glad he stuck with Matt and vice versa, and hope Matt has a long and successful career. He's always seemed like a good kid.

I posted about the Arena football league players going on strike a few days ago. There was a bizarre story that came from this. During a pre-game team lunch at Olive Garden the owner of the Pittsburgh franchise fired the entire team and more or less cobbled together a bunch of guys off the street to play the game. Pittsburgh still ended up winning the game 40 to 26. This could make for a good made for tv movie. LOL

Ok, here's the story.

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-sh...190741599.html

Quote:
The owner of the Pittsburgh Power fired all 24 members of his team during a pregame meal at an Orlando-area Olive Garden.

With AFL players set to strike before the 2012 season opener, owner Matt Shaner reacted first, cutting his entire team hours before kickoff of a game against the Orlando Predators.

"Mid-statement, all the players got up and left," former Power center Beau Elliott told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Every player got up and left while he was still talking. There were 15 to 20 angry, large individuals."

The AFL Player's Association was calling for an increase in the $400 game checks paid to most players on each team. The union demanded a 300 percent increase in the minimum salary. AFL owners countered with a $100 raise.

Shaner told the newspaper that some players split from the union and returned to the team in time for Saturday night's game. Those who didn't were stuck in Orlando and forced to return to Pittsburgh on their own.

Members of the Predators were also released.

The game was still played, with unfilled roster spots being taken by replacement players, some of whom arrived to the arena minutes before kickoff. One backup quarterback switched teams before the game after getting "drafted" during a pregame selection. As a result, the season opener had the feeling of a pick-up game down by the local high school field.

The NFL Network broadcast the game live. Announcers reportedly couldn't identify a number of players.

Pittsburgh won 40-26, in front of more than 13,000 fans.

Other AFL teams played the same day with complete rosters.

Saints re-signed WR Marques Colston to a five-year, $40 million contract.
The deal reportedly includes $19 million guaranteed. A move that previously seemed unlikely gained momentum after dueling Tuesday reports revealed the Saints were "working feverishly" to re-sign their physical slot receiver, and that Colston "badly" wanted to remain in New Orleans. Since the Saints were expected to enter free agency with just $7 million in cap space, Colston will undoubtedly earn a low base salary in 2012 before seeing his numbers steadily increase. It's the best possible news from a fantasy perspective, as Colston had little chance of equaling his routinely prolific production outside of the Saints' aggressive aerial attack. Colston will turn 29 in June.

That's quite a blanket statement. There are some very professional and knowledgeable people that are employed by ESPN. From everything I have heard, Manning just doesn't seem as interested in Miami as he does in some other teams. Perhaps it is all just a distortion from the Manning camp to field a significant offer from Miami if Fynn is quickly signed. But I personally do not feel that is the case.

There are some knowledgable people at ESPN. Unfortunately the way they've resorted to tabloid journalism as a company has hurt their credibility. Almost every ESPN "breaking news" story these days is an "unnamed source" that more often than not is wrong.

Most of the real investigative sports journalism these days is done my independent analysts/experts or internet sports reporters like Yahoo Sports. Heck, almost every major college sports scandel over the past few years has been broken by Yahoo Sports. If I'm a crooked college sports program I'd be calling my attorney if I saw a Yahoo Sports reporter nosing around campus. You know there's trouble when they show up.

Cowboys released CB Terence Newman.
The oft-injured 32-year-old didn't stand a chance of seeing his scheduled $6 million salary after being toasted routinely throughout the final two months of the season. The Cowboys will use the cap savings to target free agents Cortland Finnegan and Brandon Carr. Newman may have to take an incentive-laden deal on the open market.

I do agree with this statement. Another thing that annoys me is ESPN rarely gives credit to another media outlet when they break a story. I remember when Carson Palmer got traded to the Raiders Jay Glazer had it on Twitter and went on the radio over 20 minutes before anyone on ESPN mentioned it, yet ESPN never credited him as the source.

People at work always use ESPN as a credible source and think I'm dumb because I usually scoff. The only source at ESPN I regularly trust is Adam Schefter, yes even guys like Chris Mortensen and John Clayton I consider to be quite unreliable.

Heh... anytime I find a new story from ESPN I second source it before taking it seriously.
