No worries. As soon as a bigger draft bust comes along JaMarcus will cease to be mentioned. Could be awhile though...

Source - http://espn.go.com/nfl/draft2013/sto...ording-sources

Quote:
Star Lotulelei, one of the elite prospects for the 2013 NFL draft, will not be allowed to work out Monday at the scouting combine after an echocardiogram revealed that the former Utah defensive tackle has a heart condition that requires more testing, according to league sources.

Lotulelei's agent, Bruce Tollner, confirmed to ESPN's Joe Schad that the first team All-American had an abnormal test result as part of his physical and will visit a specialist this week.

Lotulelei was discovered with an abnormally low Ejection Fraction, detecting that the left ventricle of his heart was pumping at only 44 percent efficiency, sources said. The normal range is between 55-70 percent efficiency.

The 6-foot-2, 311-pound Lotulelei will undergo further testing in Salt Lake City in an effort to seek more clarity with the condition, a source said. If it's a confirmed chronic condition, medical experts consider it an indication of possible heart damage.

Tollner said that Lotulelei was asked by combine officials to not participate until consulting a specialist. Lotulelei still will be interviewed by NFL teams this weekend in Indianapolis and plans to participate at Utah's Pro Day on March 20.

Lotulelei is the No. 1 overall player as ranked by Scouts, Inc. and has been rated as a top-five draft prospect by ESPN draft experts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay.
It's scary if you think about it, any one of us could have an issue similar to that and never know it. We aren't being poked and prodded at an event like the combine. We're just regular people.

And that's the thing. Most can't afford these tests and insurance won't cover anything like that unless a doctor has good reason to order it. I had stomach issues that got progressively worse for a couple years in high school. It was only much later that an unrelated medical test showed by pure luck showed that I had diverticulum, requiring somewhat major surgery.

The kind of comprehensive medical testing these athletes get to ensure huge contracts are far out of reach for nearly everyone. This kind of thing gets caught quite a bit in pro sports. It happened to Jeff Green when he was traded to the Celtics and a heart condition requiring open heart surgery was necessary. I can see why teams do it nowadays with countless millions of dollars on the line.

EDIT - From what I'm reading the condition this guy is diagnosed with is a big indicator of steroid abuse. Hopefully that's not the case with Star.

Looks like a deal for Alex Smith is close ...

Quote:
Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora
The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora
so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense
Follow up... Its not the Jags...

#jaguars GM Dave Caldwell says via text "not us" who has deal in place for SF QB Alex Smith.
I'm guessing Chiefs...

Hmm... I was thinking a different Smith was going to be their QB - Geno Smith. Or maybe they're still going to draft him #1 but think he'll take awhile to develop.

No way they take Geno #1. They've already said they will take the best player available there. I've heard mention of it possibly being a tackle. But if they are trading for Alex (which none of the local media is reporting) I imagine their #1 would be in the trade.

Most mock drafts I've seen have either Geno Smith or Luke Joeckel #1 overall.

But that's because KC needs a QB... not because Geno is that good. I was just looking at Kiper's board. He has Joeckel #1 and Geno's not even listed. Looking at the ones listed on NFL.com, 6 people have him going in the first one; 3 at 1, 1 at 3 and 2 at 7. I just don't think he's a QB you throw away the pick and money on. I could see somebody trading up from the second round into the late first round, but taking Geno in the top 15 is like passing on Crabtree for Heyward-Bey: only Oakland could do it.
