The Ravens are near a deal with former Raiders draft bust Rolando McClain.

New England has signed Steelers restricted FA WR Emmanuel Sanders to an offer sheet.

Interestingly, the offer sheet that NE signed PITT RFA WR Emmanuel Sanders to is for one year. Steelers will have five days to match.
I don't have a problem with the Patriots signing Sanders to an offer sheet, but I don't understand why it is a one-year deal. The Patriots will lose their 3rd round pick to the Steelers if they don't match and that's too much to give up for a one-year deal. I can understand why the Patriots would trade for an established receiver because throughout the Belichick era the team has done a terrible job of drafting receivers. If the Steelers don't match the Patriots will only have four draft picks, their own 1st, 2nd, and 7th round picks, and the Buccaneers 7th round pick. They gave up their 4th round pick for Aqib Talib (and the Bucs 7th round pick), their 5th round pick for Albert Haynesworth, and their 6th round pick for Chad Ochocinco.

Wow thats surprising, its usually the Pats who have tons of draft picks to work with every year, didnt realize you guys only have 4 picks in the entire draft next year

The Steelers could have pretty much guaranteed that nobody would sign Sanders to an offer sheet by giving him a second round tender, which would have cost them $2.023 million. No team would have signed him to an offer sheet with a second round tender, he's been too injury-prone and his production hasn't been good enough to give up a second round pick for him, but at a third round tender he's worth a shot, especially for a team like New England with a pick at the end of the round.

Now the Steelers can match the Patriots $2.5 million offer or let him go. On the one hand you could argue that there's a good chance the Steelers will lose him after the season for nothing so they should get something for him now, but on the other hand without Sanders and Mike Wallace the only people left at receiver with a regular season reception are Antonio Brown and over the hill receivers Plaxico Burress and Jerricho Cotchery.

We are kind of stuck between a rock in a hard place right now. I think we have to match, already losing a lot of key players this off season. Might be looking at another 8-8 season this year if not worst.

What do you do when your Hall of Fame LB retires?

Sign the guy who's been arrested for holding a gun to someone's head.

Clutch.

A couple of those guys are at risk of not going in the first round.

I doubt Manuel, Reid and Watson get taken in the 1st. I've had Lacy going to the Packers for the past three months, but if he slips past them, he'll fall into the 2nd round as well.

I'd feel pretty dumb being there and not getting picked the first day.

With 23 guys going, guys are going to slip into the second day. It happened last year, and it will happen this year. It's the risk they take.

I know... and I correctly predicted those who would slip.

Most, if not all, of the guys I listed aren't even projected as 1st round guys, but there are always surprises, I guess.

Patriots cornerback Alfonzo Dennard was sentenced to 24 months probation, 100 hours of community service, and a 30 day jail sentence for assaulting a police officer while he was in college at Nebraska. However, he can start his jail term on March 1, 2014, so he won't miss any time. If the league tries to punish Dennard the player's union will likely fight it because they'll argue that since the infraction happened before Dennard was an NFL player he shouldn't be punished. Dennard was projected to be a second or third round pick but fell to the seventh round largely because of the assault, which happened 5 days before the 2012 draft.
