It isn't an official rule. It is how the rules are implemented. Take the emphasis on illegal contact and defensive holding this year. Did they change the rules? Of course not, but they changed how they are calling them. I bet if you ask all 32 head coaches how they'd like the Refs to proceed when hearing someone call timeout from the sidelines, I bet all would want the ref to stop play instead of having the ref turn around to look and verify it is the head coach. Not only could the play clock run out but the side judge could also miss the snap of the play, encroachment, offsides, false start, illegal shift, etc. This is an isolated incident, and one that is 100% the Jets fault. I put absolutely no blame on the shoulders of the ref. At that point even a delay of a second or two could be critical.

Ahh, While I don't necessarily disagree with my comments I apologize as I could have reacted in a more constructive way.

While I can certainly agree to disagree, I get your point about the 'official' NFL rules we all know that there are other sets of rules that the refs and players follow that aren't in the official rule book. Not sure why you are so adamant about placing the blame on the Refs when even Marty admitted it was his mistake.

I think I'll go with the opinion of a man who has made his living enforcing and clarifying the rules of the NFL over that of a disgruntled fan.

. I'm not placing all of the loss on the refs. I'm placing that call on the refs, which led to the loss. The Jets let the Pack in the game and deserved the loss. But it's frustrating to see Geno and Kerley make an amazing play to tie the game only for a bad call to cost them. I'll take my reading comprehension skills over that man who has made his living as you have put it.

Yeah the article says the TO was called after the ball was snapped.... Did you read the article you posted?

The ball is snapped, a split-second before Boston blows his whistle and raises his arms to kill the play. A frame-by-frame review shows the shotgun snap is halfway to Smith when the play is blown dead. Technically, the play should've counted -- a 36-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Kerley.
