Two thoughts on the controversial TD call in the Lions game:

First, it is one of the stupidest rules the NFL has ever come up with. Right up there with their labyrinthine definition of a catch. I can't see the rationale for such a rule. Just have the ref throw the flag back at him and say "Don't worry, we'll review it anyway."

Second...karma's a b*tch. The following is from October 17, 2011:

Quote:
Jim Harbaugh and Jim Schwartz’s altercation heard around the football world may have been inspired by a mistake Harbaugh made in the first quarter Sunday.

After Brandon Pettigrew scored the game’s first touchdown, Harbaugh decided to challenge the play. He was given a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for an illegal challenge. (All scoring plays are automatically reviewed.)

Chris Chase at Yahoo! Sports unearthed the television broadcast of the aftermath, which shows Lions coach Jim Schwartz enjoying the penalty to no end. He strutted up and down the sideline yelling towards the 49ers sideline.

It’s unclear what Schwartz yelled, but it seemed to be about knowing the rules. Perhaps that moment caused Harbaugh to be a little more exuberant in his back-slapping at the game’s end.

The biggest difference between the 2 plays is that Schwartz flag was thrown BEFORE the play ended so your comparison to the SF game is not valid.

The Lions were robbed in a game that they should have won because the Texans bring more fans to the playoffs end of discussion. How many times do you see a flag thrown and the ref goes over tells the coach he cant challenge and thats the end of it.

If anything the call should have come from NY saying uhh guys thats not a TD his arm and his knee were down. Detroit got ****ed no one can argue that, but the NFL wants the Texans to secure playoffs so thats that. NFL feels meh its Detroit no one cares, plain and simple.

Thank God that happened before the turkey got out of the Frier because that would have been my dinner into the TV, and also another thing, can someone PLEASE tell the announcers Suh giving a Love tap the Schaub is not him pummeling the QB im tired of the announcers talking about how hes being so disrespectful to a QB when all he did was barely push him.

it was a good clean game probably the game of the day right up until that blown ass call by the refs who deserve to be fired for being the shittiest refs next to the heads/tails refs against Pitt.

Just put in Greg McElroy already. He can't possibly be any worse than this.

Wow, 35 points given up by the Jets in a quarter. Yikes.

Is Rex preparing for that inevitable analyst position in his near future, yet?

Provided he's hammered and wanting to kiss a sideline reporter. That was far better entertainment than watching this blowout.

Or... They called a penalty and followed the rules as they are. Exactly like what happened to the Falcons last week. It's not a penalty to try and challenge plays you can't challenge (when they pick up the flag and hand it back), but it is a penalty to challenge an automatic review play.

Both threw challenge flags, and both drew 15-yard penalties because of it. I don't see how you can't see the similarity.

In that 2nd quarter the Pats scored a offensive, defensive, and special teams TD in 53 seconds.

Man the Jets got dumped on. So many of their own mistakes. I really hope Rex Ryan either quits or gets fired and can come be the Ravens defensive coordinator again. He was so great at it. He's just terrible as a head coach.
