Although he had a messy exit from Philadelphia in 2010, Donovan McNabb said Monday he intends to retire as an Eagle in September.

"I will retire as an Eagle and I look forward to that opportunity and that day," the quarterback told ESPN Radio 97.7 FM in Syracuse.

He later said on his NBC Sports Radio show that the team has suggested he return to Philadelphia to make his retirement announcement on Sept. 19 when his former coach, Andy Reid, leads the Kansas City Chiefs against the Eagles in a Thursday night game.

Reid said he's happy that McNabb will retire as a member of the Eagles.

"Donovan and I talked about that and I'm all for it," he said Tuesday. "He's a special guy and I'm glad he's retiring as an Eagle for the first thing, and I'm glad they're giving him a celebration because he deserves every bit of that. He's just tremendous. A good person and a great football player and I had a lot of fun with him. You don't mind coaching those guys, right?"

An Eagles spokesman would neither confirm nor deny McNabb's plans when contacted by the Philadelphia media outlets.

McNabb went 92-49-1 with the Eagles and holds the franchise records for completions (2801), passing yards (32,873) and passing touchdowns (216).

McNabb led the Eagles to four NFC Championship Game appearances and Super Bowl XXXIX, where Philadelphia fell to the New England Patriots. His time with the team ended unceremoniously, however, when he was traded to the Washington Redskins before the 2010 season.

He said he holds no animosity toward the majority of Eagles fans, who he said supported him during his time in Philadelphia.

"I have nothing but love for the Philly fans, even the ones who were highly criticizing me or opinionated in any way," he told ESPN 97.7 FM. "I can't get upset at them because my job is to get out on the field and be productive. That's what quarterbacking is all about."

McNabb, 36, last played in 2011, appearing in six games for the Minnesota Vikings before being released and sitting out the rest of that season after failing to find another NFL employer. He attempted to hook on with a team before last season but again went unsigned.

He finishes his career 17th on the NFL's career passing list with 37,276 yards and 22nd in touchdowns with 234.

As for whether he one day will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, McNabb said he never played for the "individual accolades."

"If I'm rewarded by getting in the Hall of Fame, hey that's great. But to me it's like graduation. You step across the stage and say you know what, I made it, and I'm happy for it," he said.

I don't know. I think he could be a first ballot HOF depending on who his competition is. Sapp got in over Strahan this year, which I thought was wrong. He would have to compete against Ray Lewis and Ronde Barber for that spot. I would put him in over Ronde.

He's not a first ballot Hall of Fame player though.

He wouldn't be in the same class of Sapp and Ronde. The Hall of Fame goes by when you last played, and he last played in the 2011 season so he would first be eligible in 2017. Other first year eligible players that year include LaDainian Tomlinson, Jason Taylor, Brian Dawkins, and Hines Ward. Tomlinson seems like a sure thing first ballot, and Dawkins would likely make it as well. It is also Tony Dungy's first year of eligibility (assuming he doesn't return to coaching) and I'd be surprised if he didn't make it first ballot. I can't see any other first ballot players in that class. I think McNabb will make the Hall of Fame at some point but I don't see him as a first ballot.

Oh gotcha. I always assumed it was when you retired. Maybe Dungy makes it first time maybe he doesn't. Didn't it take Parcells a couple of tries to get in, and I think he's much more worthy than Dungy .

Why is he much more worthy? Because he won 1 more Super Bowl? He's got 33 more wins in 97 more games. In 13 seasons, Dungy won 6 division titles; Parcells won 8 in 22. Dungy's teams went at least .500 after his first season, and he only had 3 seasons with less than 10 wins. Parcells had 5 losing seasons, and 9 seasons with 10 or more wins (ie, 1 less than Dungy in 9 more years). Playoffs are the only place Parcells was better, and even then he wasn't much better.... 11-8 vs 9-10.

Wherever Parcells went he greatly improved that team period, and some of those teams were pretty bad. He won 2 Super Bowls, and his coaching tree is phenomenal. Also, there is a world of difference between winning 1 and winning 2 Super Bowls. Dungy doesn't have this and let's not forget that he had the great Peyton Manning for many of those wins in Indy. Caldwell when he had Peyton racked up the wins, so it doesn't seem that impressive for Dungy to also do so. His time w/ Tampa Bay was marred with constant grumblings of him not getting over the hump of winning the whole thing. Parcells is much more worthy IMO.

In addition to Dungy's impressive stats he was also the first African-American coach to win a Super Bowl. I think that, along with his impressive record is enough to make him a first-ballot Hall of Famer.

And what is Parcells without Simms?

Or Belicheat. He literally achieved almost nothing without them and I would even argue he really had no lasting effect on the Cowboys. They won how many play-off games while he was there? I will say, 4 years probably wasn't enough to clean up the mess Jerry Jones and Dave Campo had made but I'm not convinced he would've completely turned us around if he had stayed longer.

I wasn't aware that we are going to compare Simms with Manning? Because that's a no contest.

Let's look at the 1986 stats for Simms, which was the year they first won a SB.

259 for 468 (55% completion perc), 3,487 yards, 21 td, 22 int, & 43 rushes for 72 yards and 1 td. That's not a great season. Parcells took a nasty Jets team and turned them around in 2 years. He also turned around the Pats as well. Let's not forget that he took them to a Super Bowl as well. Dungy has been to 1 Super Bowl and has come up short how many other times?

Parcells was winning his second Super Bowl without Simms. Simms got injured late in the 1990 season and Jeff Hostetler led the team to the Super Bowl XXV title.

I'm not saying Dungy is ahead of Parcells, but he's certainly not "much more worthy".

But Dungy also turned around a terrible Bucs team and got them 3 10+ win seasons in his 5 years. In all the years since, they only have 3 more.

The argument is not whether Parcells is more worthy to be a HOF. It is whether Parcells is more worthy to be a first ballot HOF than Dungy, and as you have put it, Parcells is ahead of Dungy. Therefore if Parcells had to wait to get in, then that would imply that Dungy should also wait.

Also, I don't buy into the whole first African-American to win a SB thing. If you're good, you're good. We shouldn't laud people because they were the first of their socially constructed race to achieve something. This isn't Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier or Aaron breaking Ruth's record. Dungy coached in the 90's and in the new millennium.

Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome says LB Rolando McClain has retired at age 23. The often-arrested McClain was a first round pick of the Raiders in 2010.
