Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk was just on the Dan Patrick Show and he said by releasing Hernandez now it will be very difficult if not impossible for the Patriots to get any money back from Hernandez. Since the release occurred after June 1 Hernandez will have a $7.5 million cap number in 2014. From the sounds of it the Pats wanted to disassociate themselves from Hernandez bad enough that they were willing to take the cap hit and lose the ability to recover money (and cap space).

I've got to think one or both of the friends he was with flipped on him and said he was the shooter. I can't imagine they'd have enough evidence to charge him with murder without a witness.
