Just out of curiosity, can anybody think of another active (at the time) athlete in one of the major US sports being implicated or charged in a murder? From the NFL alone, I have Ray Lewis, Rae Carruth, Jovan Belcher and now Aaron Hernandez. I won't count Josh Brent since that was technically manslaughter and clearly not something he intended (though very, very stupid).

First degree murder

Under Massachusetts law, murder occurs in the first degree when it is "committed with deliberately premeditated malice aforethought, or with extreme atrocity or cruelty, or in the commission or attempted commission of a crime." If convicted of first degree murder, Hernandez would get life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Massachusetts previously had the death penalty, but it was abolished in 1984.

OJ, that dude was clearly guilty and if not he had his son do it.

Glenn Sharpe has been charged with murder (he played with the Falcons, Saints and Colts, he was not very good and spent most of his time on the Practice Squad.. but he did win a ring with the Saints in 2010)

Eric Naposki has been charged with murder as well (he played with the Pats and Colts)

Stephen Starring has been charged with murder (he played with the Pats, Lions and Bucs)

Duane Goodrich and Leonard Little, although Goodrich wasn't intentional, guess it was manslaughter.

Apparently he shot a man in the face in February too and is facing a civil case for that.

I assume bail will be denied again in today's review hearing.

At Hernandez's bail hearing the prosecutor said they will be seeking a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

Edit: The judge has denied bail.
