Player Workouts Continue At Valley Ranch
Posted by jellis at 3/8/2011 3:32 PM CST
Not that it should necessarily be any different considering that the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement has been extended through Friday, but it's worth a mention that players are still visiting the team complex to train.

While the offseason program of new strength and conditioning coach Mike Woicik has yet to begin, players have been coming in to work out on their own since the season ended at the start of January.

Several players were in the Valley Ranch weight room getting reps in on their own Tuesday.

A lockout by the NFL owners would mean, literally, players are locked out of team headquarters and not allowed inside to perform any working function or to have contact with team officials.

Until at least Friday, however, they are free to make use of the facility, and a number of Cowboys players are taking advantage of the extension.

Gotta love the Cowboys' website's links, makes it fun modding there.

I know he had an underage alcohol citation, but what drug(s) did Mallet also find himself experimenting with while at college? Are we talking something rather minor like marijuana or was it something a bit more severe?

There has been a lot of chatter about him having used drugs (not sure which) during his college days and it's been speculated that was why he didn't turn pro in 2010. But when it comes to NFL drafts even a rumor can be enough to fall dramatically. So far he's oddly refused to address those rumors.

Here's one of his brilliant quotes. He's handled the rumors poorly to say the least.

You have to wonder who is advising Mallett, or if he is allowing himself to be advised at all.

It would take less time and effort for him to simply address the question by saying he's made mistakes and they are behind him, and that he is now focused on football.

Instead he gave a defiant response that may as well have been, "I like drugs...a lot. Deal with it."

I don't like how terrible he was vs. OSU, (he did have some MEGA drops, but the scared play in the pocket and just off throws trouble me) but in the clutch he blew it. While Colt McCoy played against a better OSU defense and whipped them in the final minutes of his bowl game.

Thats what a winner looks like.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel believes it will be an "upset" if Jordy Nelson doesn't see more targets than Donald Driver next season.
Nelson's "arrow pointed upward" over the second half of last season, and he averaged an impressive 75 yards per game from Week 15 through the Super Bowl despite only playing 55.6 percent of the snaps. Nelson is entering a contract year, has already bypassed James Jones in the team's plans, and is carrying plenty of momentum with the confidence gained from his breakout performance in the Super Bowl. Chris Wesseling's favorite Dynasty "buy" at wide receiver last month, Nelson is emerging as a legit WR3 candidate for 2011.

WASHINGTON -- The NFL's lead labor negotiator says the league has offered to turn over more financial information than it ever has given to the players' union -- and more than the 32 clubs have access to.

On his way into Wednesday's mediation session, NFL general counsel Jeff Pash says the issue of financial transparency -- a key sticking point in labor talks this week -- "really should be behind us."

Wednesday morning's talks may be most critical yet in the collective bargaining process, a source told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen. Mediator George Cohen is meeting with smaller group of negotiators while the larger groups await word. The financial disclosures that remain the major stumbling block in the negotiations is believed to be Cohen's focus in mediation Wednesday.

"We've made more information available in the course of this negotiation than has ever been made available in decades of collective bargaining with the NFLPA," Pash said. "Far more information. And we've offered to make even more information [available], including information that we do not disclose to our own clubs."

Earlier this week, the NFL agreed to disclose league-wide profits and to show how many clubs had declining profits over the course of the most recent CBA, agreeing to a request NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith made in October and it had originally balked at. When the NFL did, the NFLPA declined to see it, a source familiar with the process told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter, because it would compromise their public position on financial transparency.

The league thought it was the first step in the beginning of financial transparency. But it was not transparent enough for the NFLPA. And now the two sides continue to be locked in a stalemate, now facing a critical juncture in their mediation.

The NFLPA declined comment when contacted by ESPN, saying it has been asked by the mediator not to discuss specific matters with respect to negotiations.

The current collective bargaining agreement was set to expire last week, but two extensions now have pushed the cutoff to the end of Friday.

The NFL Players Association retained an international investment bank to help it decide whether the league's offer to reveal more financial information during negotiations will be enough to satisfy the union's call for full disclosure.

Zeroing in on the crux of the labor dispute -- how to split $9 billion in revenues -- one NFLPA executive committee member, Cleveland Browns linebacker Scott Fujita, said in a telephone interview Tuesday with The Associated Press and NFL Network that what the NFL has turned over to the union so far "hasn't been sufficient."

Another executive committee member, Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday, said as he left Tuesday's 9½-hour mediation session that the bank would "help judge how helpful the material they were offering to give us" would be.

One key question is what cut team owners should get up front to help cover costs such as stadium construction and improvement. Under the old deal, owners received more than $1 billion off the top. They entered these negotiations seeking to add another $1 billion to that amount, before other revenues are divided with players.

Sources familiar with the process told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter last Friday that the sides narrowed the financial gap between them by roughly $5 million per team per year. Nevertheless, a significant divide exists -- roughly $25 million per team per year. With 32 teams in the league, the gap equates to $750 million to $800 million per year.

"We're being asked to give back almost a billion dollars, so it's important for us to adequately analyze and interpret the little bit of information that's been provided," said Fujita, who attended negotiations last month but not this week. "And ultimately, if they're unwilling to provide full audited statements, then we need to know what other information we need to make a sound decision."

Asked whether having full financial transparency from the league is a deal-breaker, NFLPA assistant executive director for external affairs George Atallah replied: "In the face of an almost billion-dollar ask? Yes."

Atallah would not identify the investment bank, which he said has been advising the union for a "couple of months."

If a deal isn't reached by Friday, the sides could agree to another extension. Or talks could break off, leading to, possibly, a lockout by owners or antitrust lawsuits by players.

The NFL has not lost games to a work stoppage in nearly a quarter-century. By agreeing to continue with mediation, the league and union made it clear neither was quite ready to make the drastic move of shutting down a sport that is more popular than ever. The past two Super Bowls rank No. 1 and No. 2 among most-watched TV programs in U.S. history.

On Wednesday, a third owner joined this week's talks as the Steelers' Art Rooney attended the meeting with the Giants' John Mara and Chiefs' Clark Hunt, sources told Schefter.

At the end "A third owner joined the talks, Art Rooney of the Steelers"

You would think with $9 billion dollars in revenue being discussed that ALL the owners would at least attend....

Heard about this on my way to work this morning. This happened nearby me in Apopka, FL. It's all over my local news but. Very bad news for the Patriots if this turns out to be true. On the radio it was mentioned that one of the victims is already being represented by John Morgan, one of the best personal injury lawyers in Central Florida.

Patriots Safety Brandon Meriweather Reportedly Accused Of Shooting Two People

Reports are circulating that New England Patriots safety Brandon Meriweather was involved in an incident in which two men where shot at a party in Apopka, Florida, last month.

Details are still sketchy and unconfirmed, but according to a lawyer from one of the victims, who spoke to Deadspin, a friend of Meriweather's got into a fight at a house party. When the the friend lost the fight, Meriweather allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the other man, hitting him in the face and shooting another man in the head. Both survived.

Police are investigating the matter, but no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed. According to this Orlando news story, on the night of the shooting two gunshot victims showed up at an Apoka hospital in private vehicles, but did not want to press charges or cooperate with the police.

Hell, that's where I live and I never heard about it until now. Morgan is a bulldog, no two ways about it, but... well, you know personal injury lawyers.

They guys haven't pressed charges and aren't cooperating with police, so we'll see what happens.

If it's proven he did it there's very little chance he gets a slap on the wrist. Attempted murder is attempted murder and Florida prosecutes these things tough. It helps to have money like Mayweather does, but that can only buy ya so much. I guess he could try to claim self defense, but that's a stretch if he did shoot multiple people in the head.

Just more evidence that Merriweather is a head hunter.

The guy is terrible. His only contribution to New England are his press conference appearances where if one were to close their eyes, they might believe that Mike Tyson was talking.

I hope this is reason enough for the Patriots to finally cut ties with this "pro-bowler."

I hope this isn't true, but the kids a ball hawk.

Gabe Carimi I think had a great pro day... I wouldn't mind seeing the skins take him at 10.

Though I admit I'm a Patriots fan and maybe biased, everything about this case seems like a shakedown from the victims. Their lawyer (John Morgan) admits he has a lot of doubts about whether Meriweather was the shooter, and from the sounds of it the victims think Meriweather is the shooter but have nothing to back that up and the shooting took place in a dark yard. The fact that the victims are going after Meriweather in civil court rather than criminal makes it seem even more likely to me that it's about the money, because there is no evidence in the case that lead to Meriweather.
