NFL is the most popular sport for the 30th consecutive year of the Harris Poll, based off percent of respondents calling it their favorite sport (35%). Then it's MLB (14), college football (11), auto racing (7), NBA (6), NHL (5) and college basketball (3).

But the best part is the extra information (emphasis mine):

Quote:
A sport's popularity varies greatly based on demographics. More people who live in rural areas on the East coast say they're fans of the NFL than the general U.S. population. Those with an annual household income of more than $100,000 are more likely to be baseball fans, while African Americans are less likely to enjoy the sport, the poll reveals. More southerners call college football their favorite sport, while ]b]those with a high school education or less tend to gravitate to auto racing.[/b]

I think NFL has more hardcore fans, but I bet baseball has more casual fans. It's also difficult to compare viewership between football and any other sport because of the schedules. 16 games vs 162 games. It's far more important to watch each of the 16 games than each of the 162. And in the playoffs, you don't have to watch every game in baseball, since ultimately, the first 3 are meaningless to casual fans. In football, even the casual fans care about each game in the playoffs.

Well it is "America's Pastime." By that I guess people mean "past it's time." All you have to do it look at revenues and TV ratings to know football is the juggernaut of American sports.

But... but... I've been hearing soccer was on the upswing for two decades now! It was supposed to become a major sport in the U.S. due to demographic shifts. So much for that. It didn't even register.

Well it is a flawed way of tracking overall popularity of a sport. College football is probably more popular overall than baseball, but most people prefer the NFL over NCAA.

Here's the full results of that Harris poll. As amusing find. NASCAR sure does live up to the stereotypes.

Quote:
Auto Racing:

Most popular with:
Education of HS or less
Those with household income less that $35k
Those living in rural areas

Least Popular with:
African-Americans
Hispanics
Net change in % saying each sport is their favorite from 1985-2012:

Increases:
NFL +11
Hockey +3
Auto Racing +2

Decreases:
MLB -9
Men's College Basketball -3 (you can thank the big drop in quality of the game due to the top players going pro after 1 year for that)
Men's Tennis -3 (Likely due to the lack of quality American men's players these days)
Horse Racing -3

And with college football you at least get to see the best players play for at least 2 or 3 years due to age requirements for the NFL. So the quality of NCAA FB is still excellent. College basketball however had nosedived in quality since the early 90's due to the top players skipping college completely or playing just one year.

All the PED scandals have really hurt its integrity. It's the cleanest it's been in a long time now, but unfortunately a lot of damage has been done.
