Some people are suggesting we should trade our #2 pick for Rivers straight up.
What a horrible, horrible idea... Now if they want #2 and will give us Rivers, their #17 pick, 2nd rounder, and their 1st rounder for next year, then hell yea. ![]() Otherwise, we'd be trading for a QB who probably only has a few seasons left in the tank and by the time we'd be ready to contend, he'd be washed up and/or done. But hey... We have absolutely crazy, clueless fans that are so excited about the thought of Rivers that they think giving up the #2 pick for him is a great idea. Hopefully the Chargers want Mariota badly enough to make it happen... as in, at the very minimum, swap firsts and send us Rivers. But I'm dreamin.' |

I don't see the Chargers trading Rivers. Even if he doesn't want to play in LA the Chargers can just franchise him a couple times. That would be expensive at $20.9 million in 2016 and $25 million in 2017, but as long as Rivers stays healthy he's worth that. I don't see a trade for Rivers happening and would be very surprised if the Chargers and Rivers don't reach a long-term deal after next season just because of the leverage the Chargers have.
I wonder if the Chargers will consider using a high pick on a QB this year. I can't see them using their first pick on a QB, but maybe in the second or third round they take a QB who could sit a couple years and then take over for Rivers. |

In theory, they're probably right. That's what the #2 pick is worth on paper. But they're not going to give up Rivers unless we took him for the #2 pick straight up. And that would be incredibly dumb for us to do. I'm simply speaking in hypothetical terms when referring to this trade. I know it's not a realistic option. I am still holding out hope the Browns would give us their #12 and #19 and their 1st for next year for our #2. It's the Browns... so believe me, there's always a chance they do something that dumb. Have to exploit their weakness... They already showed their hand by offering a 1st rounder to the Rams and Eagles for Bradford. |

He's worth that? Really? Rivers is worth being the highest paid QB in the league?

At the rate the salary cap is going up yes. In recent years the salary cap has been going up about $10 million per year so if that continues the cap will be around $153 million in 2016 and $163 million in 2017. That means Rivers would be taking up about 13.7% of the cap in 2016 and 15.3% in 2017. The $20.9 million cap number Rivers would have in 2016 would still be below Joe Flacco ($28.55 million), Drew Brees ($27.4 million), Matt Ryan ($23.75 million), Matt Stafford ($22.5 million), and Peyton Manning ($21.5 million). Regardless, I don't actually think Rivers plays 2 years under the franchise tag and think a long-term deal will get done.
