I'm interested to see what the Bears are going to do this year, going to the 3 -4 defense, going to a ground game and bringing in new talent and Coach Fox.

Still my favorite team and not seeing anyone really talking about them.

they didn't have many big contract star players before these guys came along

Right, but regardless of that it is incredibly difficult to afford all of these current guys. It's a wonder how they do it.

This year's salary cap is set at $143M. Off the top of my head their top paid players are (and their average salaries):

Russell Wilson - $22M
Richard Sherman - $14M
Marshawn Lynch - $12M
Earl Thomas - $10M
Bobby Wagner - $11M
Cam Chancellor - $7M
KJ Wright - $7M
Michael Bennett - $7M
Cliff Avril - $7M
Russell Okung - $8M
Cary Williams - $6M
Jimmy Graham - $10M

That's $121M average between 12 players... So that leaves $22M for 41 remaining players... That's essentially minimum salary for everyone else. And I know they have plenty others making multi-millions per year.

Like I said, it would take some amazing structuring to make this work... but either way, they'll be in cap hell sooner rather than later. Doesn't mean they can't still be a top team, but they will take a noticeable step back in a couple years.

That's a terrible way to look at their cap situation. If you want to view their salary caps through 2018, go to over the cap.

Ugh... Completely missed my point.

I'm not an idiot... I know how this stuff works. But that should give you an idea of what type of situation they're about to be in. That was the point of posting the average salaries. I'm well aware of how the contracts fluctuate season to season.

But that's an absurd average, and I'm sure everyone can recognize that they'll be having to cut/restructure big name players every offseason. It can't be sustained much longer.

And I use spotrac.

A week from today, August 11, at 9:00 ET. This will surely be a big storyline:

Arian Foster's severe groin injury will require surgery but he should be able to return during the season
With Brian Hoyer or Ryan Mallett at QB it's expected the Texans will have to rely on their running game, and neither Alfred Blue or Chris Polk have ever been primary backs, although Blue did have a 156 yard performance last season when Foster was injured.

Well that's a disaster from a fantasy perspective!
Blue could rip off some big yardage games, and Polk will probably vulture.

Foster is so fragile!

In other Texans news, Clowney's Dad was arrested for attempted murder.

"The father of Texans outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon in a violent crime following an alleged shooting incident outside of a bar in Rock Hill, S.C., according to the Rock Hill Herald."

I'm afraid Foster is done... All my friends called me crazy when I said this would essentially be his last season. Now it seems pretty likely.

Thank god the Chargers traded up and stole Gordon from you guys... I'm convinced he would've been the Texans pick.

As for Clowney's dad... What an idiot. And thank god you guys didn't take Khalil Mack.

Mack is a stud, can't wait to see what he does this year..

Also I expect huge numbers from Carr with our improved WR core... Our defense not sure about that

I think Seattle's plan is to go all in to get another ring or two and then let the whole thing blow up and retool around Wilson.

I believe Luck is #2 in turnovers (behind only Cutler) since 2012. Definitely overrated. Great QB who will get better, but he gets way way way too much praise.

Turnover machine in the playoffs.

You get about a 5 year total pass as a QB entering the league on turnovers as long as your other stats are decent.

After that, if you keep turning it over, if you win a championship people will totally ignore your turnovers (Eli Manning), and if you don't people will start to talk about how you are the worst quarterback in the history of the NFL (Cutler).

Even if you later fix your turnover situation, you can never escape the reputation once it's set.
