Quote:
No, New England and Buffalo fans, you are not the only ones who thought the officiating was terrible in the Patriots’ 20-13 win over the Bills on Monday night.

A source from the NFL Referees Association, who has officiated dozens of NFL games, reached out on Tuesday morning to gripe about the officiating on Monday night and explain how the crew botched so many calls. The seven-man officiating crew, led by referee Gene Steratore, made at least three crucial mistakes on Monday night:

■ An inadvertent whistle that negated a potential touchdown to Danny Amendola.

■ Allowing James White to score a touchdown on a play that should have been whistled dead.

■ And running off the final 2 seconds of the game after Bills receiver Sammy Watkins rolled out of bounds.

View Story
Inadvertent whistle costs Patriots a potential touchdown
The refs gave the Patriots credit for a 14-yard gain and tacked on 15 yards for an interference penalty on the Bills sideline.

“Guys are rolling their eyes over that performance,” the source said of his fellow officials. “That was really bad.”

Let’s break down the three plays and explain what did happen and what should have happened:

Play No. 1: The inadvertent whistle

With 14:05 left in the third quarter, Tom Brady scrambled to his right and lofted a pass to Amendola, who had beaten his defender and had nothing but open space behind him. But one of the officials mistakenly blew his whistle during the middle of the play, costing the Patriots a big play and potentially a touchdown.

The official was No. 108 – line judge Gary Arthur, and it hasn’t been an easy season for him. In Week 1, Arthur was trampled by a Ravens player on a punt against the Broncos and suffered a gruesome injury – nine broken ribs, a broken collarbone and a partially collapsed lung.

Monday night’s game was Arthur’s second game back from injury, and our source believes Arthur blew the whistle because he became skittish once Brady and the action of the play rolled his way toward the sideline.

After huddling with his officials for 1 minute and 55 seconds, Steratore awarded Amendola with a 14-yard catch, then assessed the Bills with an additional 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct for a Bills coach interfering with the play.

“What we do from that point onward is find out where the football was at the time the whistle was blown,” Steratore said. “We deemed it to be, in our judgment, received by the receiver, as we stated, at the 45-yard line, I believe.”

And while NFL head of officiating Dean Blandino called the whistle a clear mistake, he praised Steratore’s handling of the situation.

“Once it did happen, the crew I thought did a good job of handling where they were going to put the football,” Blandino said Monday night. “Because again, both teams are affected by the whistle blowing. Both teams stopped, and so we can’t assume what would have happened and so we gave the ball to the Patriots at the spot of the catch and then enforced the penalty from there.”

But upon review, the ball was still clearly in the air when the inadvertent whistle was blown, and our source believes that the officials didn’t call it correctly.

“They should have just blown the play dead, but were looking to appease both sides,” the source said.

Play No. 2: James White’s touchdown

With six minutes left in the third quarter, the Patriots caught the Bills’ defense substituting, quick-snapping the ball while Jerry Hughes was late running onto the field from the sideline, and White scored a 6-yard touchdown to put the Patriots ahead 20-10.

But the Patriots never should have been allowed to snap the ball, according to the source. A bird’s eye view of the play shows that Patriots tight end Scott Chandler began running onto the field from the sideline, but quickly reversed course and retreated back to the sideline. The Bills then countered by sending Hughes in from their sideline.

Even though the Patriots technically didn’t substitute, the officials should have stood over the ball and not allowed the Patriots to snap it until the Bills were given Bills ample time to get their substitutions into the game, per NFL rules. Not only was Hughes 15 yards in the backfield, but Marcel Dareus also scrambled to get onside.

The touchdown also should not have counted because when a player is so far in the backfield like Hughes was, officials are supposed to whistle the play dead and assess the penalty. But they let the play stand.

Both the Patriots and Bills attempted to substitute players on the play that resulted in the Patriots’ second touchdown Monday night.

Play No. 3: Sammy Watkins rolls out of bounds, clock doesn’t stop

On the final play of the game, with the Bills trying to get in range for one last Hail Mary, Watkins caught a pass at the 48, then, in an effort to get out of bounds to stop the clock, stumbled backward and fell out of bounds at the 47.

But head linesman Ed Walker didn’t stop the clock, instead ruling that Watkins gave himself up as a runner in bounds and kept the clock running. The final 2 seconds of the game ticked off instead of giving the Bills one last chance from the 47.

“The fact that he scoots out of bounds is not as important,” Steratore said after the game. “It was a judgment call by that head linesman that he felt like (Watkins) gave himself up in the field of play. It’s not a reviewable play. So winding the clock or stopping the clock is not something we review.”

Steratore’s explanation sounds good, but the source said Steratore was just covering for Walker, who is in his second NFL season and previously used to officiate in the Pac-12.

The source said Walker mistakenly applied the college rule instead of the NFL rule. Just because Watkins went backward does not mean he gave himself up as a runner – running sideways or backward is still considered trying to “advance” the football. For the runner to surrender himself, he has to truly give up on the play – such as when a quarterback slides before taking a hit.

“In the NFL, the way it’s always been officiated is if a guy gets out of bounds, you give it to him and stop the clock,” the source said. “But he called it like the college rule. I’m not sure he knew the NFL rule.”
I'm not one to blame a loss on officiating, and I don't think we can blame our loss on it last night. We should have made plays when we had opportunities to. However, that does not change the fact that the NFL really needs to look at the meat and potatoes of their officiating program. Substantial changes are needed.

The refs were indeed terrible for both sides. Why would Sammy Watkins or any player give themselves up inside the field of play in that situation? Of course he was trying to get out of bounds. Use some freaking common sense.

Believe me, I get it man...we've been in that position since Mo Lewis the old Jet knocked out Bledsoe and started this whole Brady mess.

Umm, it's actually quite smart. You're talking about TV programming on an average ordinary weekend and not SB weekend. Putting the SB on a Saturday night would have folks attending parties on Saturday evening and staying later since they're not worried about having to work the next day and turning off the TV/going to bed thereby losing viewership.

Bottom line is that it was an unmitigated mess from start to finish. There are simply far too many rules for these refs to be able to do their jobs adequately and it's just getting worse and worse.

You didnt mention the hurting the pregame shows which the net does make alot of $$ on.

If the game isnt close people will turn the tv off faster on a saturday & go out as compared to a sunday nite.

More people go out saturday nite so it hurts the leadout program too.

If more people are at parties thats less home watching on their nielsen boxes which actually hurts the rating.

Same reason the oscars arent on a saturday nite.

Wouldn't matter. NFL is king. It would dominate the rating on Saturday too.
An argument can be made that more folks would be inclined to watch the entire game because they might not have to work the next day.
Not to mention the worldwide audience. Yep, airing on Saturday wouldn't miss a beat.

Again, much like the Det/Dal on Thanksgiving Day nonsense, we will never know until the NFL actually makes a change.

And you're basing those numbers on...?
The pregame is part of the show! Folks who would tune into a Sunday pregame, would be just as inclined to tune into a Saturday pregame.

Nobody is disputing that Sunday is poweful night for tv, just that the Super Bowl could perform just as well, if not better on Saturday, by virtue of many folks not having to work the next day. You can't take typical Saturday tv numbers and apply them here, as the Super Bowl is a different beast altogether. People schedule things around the Super Bowl, like no other airing on TV.

SB pregame runs 7:00am to 6:00pm - people do stuff saturday like work, errands etc so less would watch - stuff not as many do on a sunday.

Dont get the "not have to work next day" part ?? if they dont have to work theyre more likely to go out on a saturday nite as opposed to not going out sunday nite cause they have work monday.

Again talking casual fans which you need to get to 115 million.

3 things to me at all time lows:

announcing - too many mistakes.
refs - ditto.
special teams - fumbles, penalties, running the ball out of endzone & getting tackled on the 12.

Bad.

Nobody of note is watching at 7am.
Conjecture means you can skew the numbers downward, in your favor...and I can skew them upward, in my favor. That's where we are right now.
Until it actually happens we will never really know.
