The Titans waived QB Zach Mettenberger today. A little surprising just because of the timing and they don't have a lot behind Mariota with Matt Cassel and Alex Tanney. Mett was 0-10 as a starter in 2 seasons.

The Bills have elected to take a proactive approach concerning Shaq Lawson's right shoulder. Though he's capable of playing, the club chose to eliminate any possibility of the shoulder surfacing as a problem down the line with surgery now.

Shortly after being made the Bills top draft choice Shaq Lawson maintained that his shoulder has not been an issue for him and that he wouldn’t need surgery. Knowing the long term investment that Lawson is however, the Bills do not want to take any chances. The pass rusher is scheduled to undergo surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday.

The club released the following statement Monday afternoon.

“The Buffalo Bills are taking measures to prevent the possibility of Shaq Lawson aggravating a pre-existing shoulder condition during the season. While he could continue to play, the Bills medical staff has determined that surgery is the best course of action for the overall health of his shoulder moving forward. He had an occurrence of the condition last week, but that would not preclude him from participating in the offseason program. Shaq is scheduled for surgery tomorrow on his shoulder with a rehabilitation program to follow. A timetable for his return is still being established.”

Bills GM Doug Whaley was particularly pleased that Lawson agreed to take this proactive measure.

“I want to take this opportunity to commend Shaq Lawson and his representatives for putting the team first by having this surgery on his shoulder done now,” Whaley said. “By doing so, he’s forsaking personal goals to be 100 percent healthy when we will need him most during the regular season. Fans constantly hear us say that we want players with tremendous character who keep team goals ahead of personal ones and Shaq is a great example of this.”

Forecast by Whaley as a starting outside linebacker for the Bills, Lawson will admittedly have some ground to make up when he’s cleared to return to full participation. Obviously the club felt it was more important to eliminate any lingering concerns about Lawson’s shoulder now rather than be forced to potentially deal with them during the regular season.

Obviously not ideal, but this is absolutely the right decision. Get Shaq's shoulder right.

I'm not that surprised. He was beyond horrific last year. I've seen some bad QB play over the years. His four starts took the cake. It was unwatchable.

And I know a lot of the blame falls on our garbage OL, but Mariota made do with the same group of crap players.

In Mett's three starts last season, we did not top 7 points. That's pathetic... He also started an additional game (week 17), but went 5/13 for 38 yards and a pick 6 before being replaced and outplayed by Tanney in a game we scored 24, I believe. So I'm not going to count those points for him. He sucked so bad last year and contributed nothing to this team. Just another Whiz/Webster bum.

If he lands in the right system with an awesome cast on offense, he could be a very solid backup. But he has all but proven he's not going to be a starter in this league.

He could really end up being claimed by anyone... since he is just a backup.

The dude is 0-10 as a starter. I think that's Brody Croyle/Brandon Weeden territory.

I still can't believe how bad of a coach Whiz is. It's truly hard to fathom.

Looks like the only other teams that put claims in for Mett were the Giants and Bengals. That's pretty telling that he sucks. If he worth anything a lot of teams would've tried to get him.

Bengals have Dalton and solid backup with McCarron, so not even sure why they would be interested.

I guess they view Mett as a 3rd string QB. But I think they have teams interested in trading for McCarron. If the price was right, I'm sure they'd do it. If they had Mett, they'd at least have someone to backup Dalton in the event they traded McCarron.

I'm telling you guys... Mett is awful. And this is coming from someone who really liked him as a rookie. I thought most of his problems were the OL's fault. That's part of it, but he sucks on his own merit. I would not be surprised if he is the #3 QB in SD behind Clemens. He may not even make the team.
