Mike Shanahan once ordered Elvis Grbac to throw at Al Davis’ head

The list of folks who butted heads with Al Davis during the 50 years the late Oakland Raiders owner spent in professional football is as long as his list of accolades and accomplishments. All right, it's probably much longer.

One of his most bitter conflicts was with current Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan, who spent one season working as Raiders head coach before a dispute with Davis led to his ousting.

How bad was the blood between the two? Five years after the firing, Shanahan ordered one of his players to throw a ball at Davis' head during pregame warmups. Rick Maese of The Washington Post linked to a story written by The New York Times' Mike Freeman on Sept. 13, 1998 which included this tale:

It was 1994 and Shanahan and Grbac were both with the San Francisco 49ers. Shanahan, the offensive coordinator, was working with Grbac before a game against Oakland. [...]

[...] Davis, as he does before almost every game, was walking the field, talking to players and others. Shanahan pulled Grbac aside, Grbac recalled, and gave an unusual order: ''See Al Davis over there? I want you to throw the ball right at him.''

A shocked Grbac replied: ''I can't do that. If I hit him, do you know what he could do to me?''

Shanahan looked at Grbac with his intense glare and said, ''Throw the ball.''

So Grbac did. He threw a tight, hard spiral some 30 yards directly at the head of Davis. At the last second, Davis saw it and ducked, the ball missing him by only a few inches. Davis, his hair ruffled, then made an obscene gesture at Shanahan, witnessed by a former Raiders coach who confirmed Grbac's story.

I know, I had the same exact thought: Who knew Elvis Grbac could throw a tight, hard spiral 30 yards and barely miss his target by inches?

hahahaha Shanny is the man

I stayed up last night to check out the Lions. I'm very impressed on last night's performance. Best is a beast, and underrated and no one at worked believed me.

From Rotoworld- http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/6439/andrew-luck

Quote:
Owner Jim Irsay indicated Monday that the Colts would be willing to take a quarterback like Stanford QB Andrew Luck in the 2012 NFL draft.

The Colts and Rams are the only two teams without a win on the season. "Guys like that come along so rarely," Irsay said, referring to Peyton Manning and Luck. "Even if that means that guy sits for three or four years, you'd certainly think about taking him ... you see what Green Bay did with [Brett] Favre and [Aaron] Rodgers and you'd like to be able to do the same thing." Manning will be 36 in March and is recovering from multiple neck surgeries.
He may just be trying to up the value of the pick if the Colts get it, but like I said before, I think he takes him if they get that pick.

LOL - people here still say the Lions "aren't for real" (whatever that means). They're 5-0. There's only one other team that's 5-0 -- the defending Super Bowl champs.

I guarantee if the Lions went 16-0 some here would still say "meh, they're not for real, all the teams they played are terrible."

When they were 0-16 was it because all of their opponents were good?

NOO!!!!

Well, GL to Tebow. I'm sure he'll bring that fire and excitement back in Denver. It was only a matter of time before he was going to start. Just can't believe it took somewhat this long to realize that Orton wasn't consistent to keep the starting job.

BTW, Brady is still in the lineup correct?

Merril Hoge has had an intense hatred toward Tebow all year. I've never seen such hatred from an analyst toward a player. I'd love for Tebow to succeed just to see how Hodge would react.

It's interesting that Tebow is now starting because the Broncos next game is at Miami and the Dolphins are honoring the Florida Gators 2008 national championship team which was quarterbacked by Tebow. The Dolphins have been struggling to sell tickets but it's possible this game could sell out and a large percentage of the fans could be cheering for the Broncos.

There's no way that game doesn't sell out. I've never been a fan of his on the football field and he didn't prove much to me last Sunday. Tebow has the bye week to prepare for a lousy Dolphins team. I expect that he plays well, but wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't. I still think it's hilarious that he had the best selling NFL jersey before he even took a snap as a Bronco and continues to have one of the best selling jerseys after starting in just 3 out of 21 games.

The Jaguars are bringing in punters after Matt Turk's brutal performance in last Sunday's loss to the Bengals.
Coach Jack Del Rio threw Turk under the bus Monday. "When you have seven punts on the day and [only] one of them is good, that's not going to work for you. That's what we had [Sunday]," Del Rio said. Turk, a 43-year-old veteran, blamed windy conditions for his poor play. Free agents Nick Harris and Matt Dodge are candidates to replace him.

Brandon Lloyd probably takes a hit too, not sure if Willis McGahee does though since they will still have to hand off to him. Will say it means McGahee's chances for red zone TDs probably just went way down.
