I agree with this. When I was a youngster, I didn't want to like the same teams as my dad so I picked expansion teams like the Panthers and the Colorado Rockies. Luckily I grew out of that phase

I became a Patriots fan for a similar reason. Pretty much all my friends were Bears, Packers, or Vikings fans and I didn't want to like the same team as them so I decided to become a Patriots fan. I was 10 and they had just drafted Drew Bledsoe, who I liked in college, and I liked their colors. It was a lot of random reasons and I could have just as easily become a fan of a team like the Bengals and had a lifetime (to date) full of misery.

Been a Lions fan since I was 3. No one else in my family likes Detroit, and that's even with us living an hour away from Detroit.

Raiders fan since 84 or so. I'll freely admit to thinking Montana was a badass tho. Everyone worshiped him in elementary school. I even liked how Steve Young played.

In basketball i officially adopted a new team as an adult when my old team pissed me off beyond belief. Plus i moved. So now i lay claim to two.

Sark is a good coach. As long as he can control his drinking problem, he will be successful.

Bandwagon fans happen with every generation and dynasty.

I'll wait and see to comment.

But lol at Nick Saban firing Lane Kidding because he already had the replacement, and then losing the replacement.

Haha, sounds like me...been a miserable NYJ fan since at least age 7 and I'm the only one in my family. Still to this day have no clue why I picked them, but apparently even from a young age I must have been a glutton for punishment.

I don't mind casual fans who know next to nothing about the NFL and only watch one game (the Super Bowl) every year doing that. It's the really avid fans who do watch every week and switch their allegiance every few years depending on whose winning who annoy me.

My dad and I shared no interests so I discovered football organically and became a Cowboys fan in my teens.

My parents are casual fans, my deep fanhood came from my grandfather

As for me I seem to pick tortured teams to root for. The teams I root for are all Florida teams except MLB. OF the three teams that I really care about they've won one championship in my 36 years.

MLB - Braves - Tons of playoff appearances, 5 World Series, 1 friggin championship. Because until I was about 13 (?) there were no MLB teams in Florida and from the late 80's I became a Braves fan because they were the only team whose every game was aired in the state, being the closest team. Still irks me the friggin Marlins have won more titles despite being a deadbeat organization for the most part.

NBA - Magic - Two Finals but zero titles. Can't retain their superstar players.

NFL - Jaguars - Zero titles, not really relevant since the mid-late 90's. Prior to the Jags existing I rooted for the Dolphins, which was similar misery.

NHL - Lightning - Two Finals, 1 title. Extremely casual with hockey. I really only watch a little of the playoffs each year.

It's insane. It still boggles my mind that they blew that specific series.

Adding to the fanhood convo, I was born & raised in North Texas so football is lyfe out there. I've been a fan of Dallas since I was 5 or so, what's funny is that I was raised by my grandparents who didn't give a lick aboot football! My grandfather was an avid baseball fan though, he loved the SF Giants & hence why I love them too.

That's the power of being really good. You make other teams overthink the situation. I've seen it so many times.

I lol when they say Brady is a system QB. Tom Brady is the system. You grab any scrub off the street and Tom Brady will win with them. He's proven that since year one.
