Ok, I generally like the Rooney rule but this is kind of ridiculous. The Raiders DID interview multiple people of color as part of the process. They clearly fulfilled the Rooney rule. Does this group just assume the rule is affirmative action? Because it's not anything like that.

Advocacy group calls on NFL to see if Raiders violated 'Rooney Rule' with Jon Gruden hire

The Fritz Pollard Alliance called Wednesday for the NFL to investigate whether the Oakland Raiders violated the "Rooney Rule" when they hired Jon Gruden as coach.

Fritz Pollard Alliance counsel Cyrus Mehri and N. Jeremi Duru said they were concerned that Raiders owner Mark Davis came to an agreement with Gruden before the team interviewed any minority candidates as required by the NFL since 2003.

"As soon as we learned of the reports, we formally requested that the NFL thoroughly investigate the matter to conclusively determine whether the Rooney Rule was violated -- and if it was violated, to impose an appropriate punishment," they said.

Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said Tuesday he interviewed two minority candidates before Gruden's hiring was announced. Those candidates were Oakland tight ends coach Bobby Johnson and Southern California offensive coordinator Tee Martin.

The Raiders and the NFL had no immediate comment Wednesday night on the request from the Fritz Pollard Alliance.

ESPN's David Newton reports the Panthers are nearing a deal to hire Norv Turner as their offensive coordinator.

The Panthers are also hiring Turner's son, Scott, as QBs coach. Head coach Ron Rivera has worked with Turner before, serving first as his linebackers coach and later as defensive coordinator in San Diego from 2007-2010. This is Turner's first coaching job since abruptly resigning as the Vikings' offensive coordinator last season. Turner will be tasked with getting the most out of Cam Newton, who finished near the bottom of the league in most passing categories this year.

Mark Davis is an idiot for admitting they already had an agreement with Gruden before they interviewed the minority candidates. All he had to do was lie and say that they hadn't come to an agreement when the interviews took place. In USA Today this morning there was an article saying the NFL needs to drop the hammer on the Raiders, and the columnist suggested a $1 million fine plus the loss of a first round pick.

So when they use the term “minority candidates”, they’re clearly only referencing black/African American men, right?

What about Hispanic, Chinese, Korean, Greek, Canadian , or women?
If the Raiders clearly wanted Gruden from the get-go, why do they have to fake formalities to appease anybody?

No they're not. How many Filipino, Hispanic, Korean, Greek head coaching candidates do you know of? When Ron Rivera interviewed for jobs before he got the Carolina he fulfilled the 'minority candidates'. So no it doesn't just apply to one race. People like you think it does but it doesn't.

A dumb rule that needs to go!

The Raiders wanted Gruden and went out and got him, the story should end right there! The Raiders nor should any other franchise be forced into these dog and pony shows giving token interviews to potential coaches they have 0 interest in and are only bound by this dumb rule to insult and waste everyone's time with this forced process!

It's also the first London game for the Seahwks and Titans. The only teams remaining that haven't played in London are the Packers, Texans, and Panthers. There was talk that the Packers-Jaguars game in 2016 was being considered for London but that Jags owner Shad Khan didn't want it moved because he knew the game would easily sell out in Jacksonville.
