According to state records in Texas, first-year Lions coach Matt Patricia was accused of aggravated sexual assault in 1996.

Patricia briefly faced charges, but he was never prosecuted and the case was dismissed five months after Patricia was indicted. Patricia's alleged victim was a college student on South Padre Island. Both the Lions and Patricia released statements late Wednesday. In his, Patricia says he was "falsely accused" and "firmly" maintains his innocence. The statement from the Lions was made in support of Patricia.

Why this case is even relevant after Matt has been cleared of this decades ago is beyond me. Now that I see on the front page of msn that the NFL will now be looking into this case leads me to believe this is payback from wearing the clown shirt!

Not gonna comment on the allegations cuz I don't know enough nor do I care to read about them, but with that shirt he definitely poked the bear. Gooddell always wants his pound of flesh.

Blake Bortles helps hold would-be thief until police arrive

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles intercepted a would-be thief and helped police arrest the teenager while at a Jacksonville Beach house party held at the home of teammate Brandon Linder on Wednesday night.

According to the Jacksonville Beach police report, a copy of which was obtained by News4Jax, 18-year-old Joseph Horton rummaged through several of the vehicles at the party, including Bortles' Ford F-150, which was unlocked with the keys inside. Surveillance video showed Horton taking Bortles' wallet from the truck; it was later found outside.

Witnesses, per the police report obtained by News4Jax, say Horton tried to drive away in the truck but couldn't get out of a crowded lot, so instead entered the home.

Police then were called and found Horton being held by Bortles and two of his friends.

Horton was arrested and charged with burglary, trespassing and grand theft, online records show.

I don't understand how the Lions didn't know about this. A coach is the face of your multi-billion dollar franchise and you'd think you'd do an in-depth background check on all your candidates. It's not like this was hard to find, Deadspin showed that a simple Nexis search pulled up the court report (which incorrectly showed the offensive as sexual assault of a child). The Lions claim their background check was only searching for convictions but for such a high-profile position you'd think they'd want to know about any potential criminal issues.

I agree, means their front office botched the review process for potential employees. Wonder if any of them get canned if Patricia gets in big trouble.

While all true, accordingly, let's remember that the GM (Quinn) already knew Patricia from New England, so this wasn't some unknown guy coming in for interviews. The fact that New England also didn't know sheds light.

What's also interesting is would they sign a player who wasn't forthright in telling them about such a thing only for it to surface later? If not, then why did they hire him?

I can understand New England not knowing. They hired him as a low-end assistant and he worked his way up to defensive coordinator. I doubt teams do an in-depth background check on entry-level positions and they wouldn't do a check as he rose up in the organization after he'd been employed for years.

What surprises me is the press never found out about this prior to now. Every paper has access to the Nexis search engine that shows the charges, and I'm surprised one of the Boston or New York papers never found this. I would think once Patricia became the defensive coordinator someone would have done a profile on Patricia and found this out and published the information.

Job application question-
Have you been convicted of a felony or any crimes within the last ten years, he checked the box and rightfully so that says no!

He was not convicted or even had to stand trial for this issue so why in the hell would he bring it up when interviewing for a job? I still say the POS in NYC leaked this to the press!
