Not thrilled with the Tate trade. Scoring hasn’t been much of a problem for Philly. Preventing opposing teams from scoring has been the problem. Especially the horrible(Jenkins aside) secondary. I would’ve been much happier with Clinton-Dix, since there was no way Patrick Peterson was leaving and/or affordable. Or some OL help. As much as I love Jason Peters, dude wanted top money and literally every game he misses time due to some injury and has 3-5 false starts. Kelce is getting old, and now Lane Johnson might miss some time with a leg injury.
Position players are always the splashy move, but I like solid moves like OL/DL/secondary.

Confused Browns fan here: why hire a QB to be your running backs coach? Aren't there plenty of former NFL RB's who'd be more qualified to know what it takes to succeed at the position?

I would imagine it's a lot like baseball where catchers are the position that produces the most managers. Quarterbacks tend to be smart players who have to know all of the positions. I would imagine on an average basis quarterback is smarter than a running back.

Well put. I've hated Hee Haw ever since the Pilot/Flying J scandal hit. Personally, I think he's guilty as shit of the whole scam and bought his way out of trouble, letting his underlings take the fall. As an NFL owner, he makes Randy "Jammies" Lerner look competent by comparison, and I don't think you'd find a single Browns fan who'd ever call him competent. Lerner lost untold millions with a Premier League Club. How does that even happen?

Doug Lesmerises is a Browns/Buckeyes reporter and columnist with Cleveland.com and one of the very, very few Cleveland sports reporters with the balls to call it as he sees it. He went HAM on both Clueless Hue and Hee Haw this week. Enjoy!

I see the logic in what you're saying. I'm just not willing to give anyone in the Browns hierarchy (with the possible exception of John Dorsey) credit for that, though.

Zach Ertz on pace for 122 receptions and 1288 yards.
If he gets that he would crush Witten’s current record of 110 for a TE and come close to Gronk’s records of 1327 recyd by a TE.
And my fantasy team that requires a TE thanks you. Of course I will miss him this week.

Me too. He's on three of my six teams. This week is truly the BYE-pocalypse.

I’ve got Jordan Reed, so I will kinda have to root for the enemy(I’m a Philly fan), but fantasy often trumps loyalty.

There's too much that needs fixing on the defense, so we might as well double-down on the offensive side of the ball and just try to out-shoot our opponents. Especially with high-scoring teams like the Rams, Saints and Texans on our horizon. It's very similar to the move the Skins made by getting Clinton-Dix; they know their passing offense is non-existent and their run defense lives or dies on the shoulders of AP, so they might as well go all-in on what they know works and hope that if they can stop the other team from scoring, it could give their own offense a chance. We'll see how both trades pan out but for now, as an Eagles fan, I'm cautiously optimistic about Tate.

I hope it provides a much needed spark. Just think too many injuries, several lingering from last season, and a tight cap won’t be enough to win the division this year. Sure hope I’m wrong, but I’ve seen how this song-n-dance plays out.
A smidge over 20pts/game hardly constitutes “high flying” offense in today’s NFL. So I’m not sure they win too many shootouts.

Well that's the idea, Tate should open up the offense so we're scoring well into the 20s and hopefully more. Even defensively we're fine up front, the secondary just needs to step up. Hopefully they will or yeah, we won't be playing in January.

Really weak running back class after 4 straight years with at least 1 running back drafted in the top 10. I won't disparage Bryce Love for choosing to go back to school to get his degree because he felt that was important, but he definitely hurt his draft stock and cost himself a good chunk of money.

49ers waived QB Tom Savage.

It means C.J. Beathard (wrist) will be good to go against the Raiders on Thursday evening. It's unclear why Savage, one of the worst players of the decade, was signed to begin with. Teams need to get more imaginative. Now 28, Savage is running out of teams to give him a third change. We suppose the Bills could always come calling.
