The Giants 6th round draft pick was shot, but survived. His college teammate was killed in the same incident.

The school confirmed that Washburn junior defensive back Dwane Simmons, 23, was killed in the shooting. Ballentine is expected to make a full recovery, the school said.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport added, per a source, that Ballentine's gunshot wound is "not life-threatening" and doctors say his recovery will take "a matter of weeks."

Ballentine, a cornerback, was drafted by the Giants with the 180th overall pick in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft on Saturday.

He also really turned his life around. That guy went to high school in my town. He was such a head case he was nearly deported (he's Polish), constantly getting arrested and in trouble in high school and in college. I thought for sure he'd wash out of the NFL, getting into more trouble. But since entering the NFL the guy has largely been free from controversy and had an incredibly productive career.

Seriously. The Raiders made a lot of awful decisions over the past couple decades, but taking Janikowski in the first round was not one of them. I thought they were crazy at the time, not only because he was a kicker, but because he had a ton of off the field issues in high school and college, but he proved me wrong.

It's the new way of doing things. If you have a great QB under a rookie contract, then you have four years to go for it all before he gets expensive and sacrifices have to be made. Cleveland has three years left.
