Looks like Adrian Peterson is just the latest highly-paid athlete to go broke. Peterson will top $100 million in career earnings this season which makes him by far the highest-paid running back in NFL history, but he has been ordered to pay $3 million in judgements to banks and may owe another $6.6 million:

I'm pretty sure they go over this type of stuff in the rookie symposium, but granted a 1-2 hour session on finances probably isn't gonna change a kid that just signed a multi-million dollar contract.

But the personal finances of individual players doesn't really reflect on the Shield at all, so of course the league office has no incentive to actually help these guys. Sadly, it'll probably take a former player getting killed because of an unpaid debt to get the league office to wake up, if that. At the very least, I'd hope the NFL can point players in the direction of good money managers, but even those guys can be crooks. |

how about just using common sense, the NFLPA and league dont need to do dick for these guys they are college educated.
If you make 10 dollars dont spend 12 it means you cant afford it. Dont rack up tons of credit debt, dont take out loans, bank your salary live off of endorsements. If you only make 100k in endorsements guess what live off 100k. They have all no matter their background had basic math since 1st grade. Stop paying for your boys in the hood as well they made their choice you made yours. |

Honestly in the last few years they go far beyond that of any other employer in the world imo. Short of having to start taking a percentage portion of players salary and setting it aside for them so they don't blow it, I don't see what else they can do for some of these players.
Just look at draft night and some of these kids coming right out of college flossing 20+ grand worth of jewelry and custom clothing, at some point the responsibility needs to lie with the player! |

It's not just athletes who go from zero to millions and then blow it all. Pro athletes making seven to nine figures just outnumber lottery winners or entertainers so there will be more stories from them. And these stories are common and everyone's heard them, so they know exactly what will happen. Especially in the NFL where they get paid the least and have the shortest careers. But they do it anyway. You can't stop them because you can't withhold their money from them.
