It sounds like the union is finally realizing they no longer have the upper hand and are willing to negotiate again. Until now they've believed they were going to get the court to rule fairly quickly that the lockout was illegal and must end, but now that may not be true. The league has offered a new proposal to the union and hopefully the union will now counter and get some serious negotiating going.

I just hope they don't get so screwed because honestly they deserve a bit better money and a rookie cap to have that money reinvested in the everyday producing players.

The mediation has adjourned until June. NFLPA president Kevin Mawae says they are no closer to a deal than they were in March. Sounds like this thing is going to keep dragging on into the summer.

John Beck says he's ready to start

After not selecting a quarterback in April's draft, Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan talked glowingly of backup John Beck. In a radio interview Monday, Beck made it clear he thinks he's ready to take over as the team's starter.

"I believe I'm a starter in the NFL," Beck said in a SiriusXM NFL Radio interview Monday.

He's certainly thinking like a leader during the lockout, calling teammates to organize workouts since players are not permitted to train at team facilities during the work stoppage.

"I basically say, 'Screw the awkwardness.' 'I'm trying to be the starting quarterback," he said in the interview. "I'll call whoever, try to set whatever up. If you don't think like a starter and act like a starter, your teammates probably aren't gonna believe you're the starter. So I'm thinking I'm the starter."

The Cowboys' official website considers WR Roy Williams unlikely to be released this year.
All of the guaranteed money from Williams' six-year contract has been paid out. He'd be a prime candidate to be released at $5.1 million in base salary if the labor rules default to 2010 status. It's a different story if a salary cap is re-established this year, though. Owner Jerry Jones was willing to take a cap hit when he released Terrell Owens back in 2009, but he'd be responsible for a monstrous $12.9 million against the cap by axing Williams.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora predicts that the Broncos will not trade Kyle Orton unless they're offered a second-round pick.
La Canfora expects the Broncos to field offers, but not to go out of their way to move Orton. "The idea that you can get Orton for a third- or fourth-round pick ... That’s not what I’m hearing," says La Canfora. "If you start talking about second-round value that moves up, then maybe the Broncos start thinking about it." Adds La Canfora, "They know their best chance to win in the short-term, and maybe even the long-term, is with Orton."

According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Kyle Orton is on the Vikings' radar as a potential veteran complement to rookie Christian Ponder.
Mort considers this likelier Vikings target than Donovan McNabb, although he appears to be underselling Orton, who could command as high as a second-round pick in a trade. Orton would also be a pretty safe bet to beat out Ponder in training camp or the preseason. The Vikings have openly spoken of Ponder as "their Matt Ryan," indicating they want to play him right away.

Honestly if I'm the Vikings or Cards I'm taking Orton with a 2 over McNabb for a 3/4, but I would pick McNabb for a 5/6.

Ray Lewis sure doesn't think much of his fellow players it seems.

One of the consequences of a lost NFL season will be an increase in crime, Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis said in a wide-raging one-on-one interview with ESPN.

"Do this research if we don't have a season -- watch how much evil, which we call crime, watch how much crime picks up, if you take away our game," Lewis told ESPN's Sal Paolantonio.

That's because, Lewis said, the NFL lockout affects "way more than us" -- the owners and the players.

"There's too many people that live through us, people live through us," he said. "Yeah, walk in the streets, the way I walk the streets, and I'm not talking about the people you see all the time."

When asked why he thought crime would increase if the NFL doesn't play games this year, Lewis said: "There's nothing else to do Sal."

It seemed to me he's talking about people in general not having anything to do for hours on Mondays, Sundays, and Thursdays. Not players but everyone from them down to the dudes that direct traffic at the stadium and the people who stay inside and watch games instead of going out looking for something to do. Which I tend to agree with.

A team source tells Len Pasquarelli of the Sports XChange that the Falcons will not pursue Chad Ochocinco after he's released.
"Aint happenin'," a Falcons team source told Pasquarelli. Ochocinco has tried to push a reunion with new Atlanta QBs coach Bob Bratkowski, his offensive coordinator in Cincinnati. The Falcons aren't going to risk team chemistry for an aging backup wide receiver. They're more likely to keep Michael Jenkins.

I still have a feeling Ocho ends up in New England. I'm not sure how I feel about that but I think it's going to happen. New England needs help at receiver and while Ocho isn't the player he once was he's still a real threat. If he does come to New England I'd imagine it would be on a low base salary deal with a lot of incentives so if he causes a problem they can cut him without much risk.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. The Patriots were best when they had a go to receiver that they could augment with quick possession receivers with good hands. They have plenty of the possession receivers in Welker, Branch, and Edelman(I hope). I just don't think OchoCinco can be that go-to guy anymore. Maybe Aaron Hernandez can be that type of receiver, like a Dallas Clark.
