More legalized betting in major markets like NY and the return to a traditional Super Bowl setting (in the L.A. market, no less) made the difference.
Even as I had skin in last year's Super Bowl, I'll admit that it was lacking with the reduced crowds. It felt like less an event. |

Its also interesting with the announcers this off season too:
Does al michaels go TNF or MNF ? Does aikman stay at FOX or go to TNF or do both ? Does sean payton go to a studio show ? Does mcvay retire & go to MNF or somewhere ? Does Herbstreit and Fowler get involved somehow ? |

Also they include out of home viewing in the number now which only started last yr so its hard to compare to numbers beyond that. I heard mattress mac advisors told him to take CIN +4.5 but he didnt listen he just played CIN moneyline. So he basically blew $9.5 million....thats funny. |

The wagers were part of a Gallery Furniture promotion that offered reimbursement to customers who spent $3,000 or more on a Tempur-Pedic, Stearns & Foster or Sealy mattress or on reclining sectionals, sofas or loveseats if the Bengals won. The promotion brought in about $20 million in revenue, with sales surging about 250% over a two-week period. About 70% of the customers involved in the promotion were new. In theory if the Bengals had won he would have used the winnings to offset the cost of the free furniture the customers would have gotten. |

Just wanted to reflect on how fortunate we've been as NFL fans in recent decades as far as Super Bowls go. I can recall the Super Bowls of the 80's-mid-90's as a kid well. To put it bluntly, the vast majority sucked. Nearly all ranged from mild blowouts to bloodbaths, with the AFC teams almost always hopelessly over matched. Less than 1/4th of the Super Bowls through the 1996 season were decided by a TD or less, with only 6% decided by a FG or less, and the majority of games being blowouts.
Since 1997, we have been in an era of ultra competitive Super Bowls with well matched teams. Only four games in this 24 year span were 20+ point blowouts, while 50% of the Super Bowls have been decided by a TD or less, and 25% decided by a FG or less. No question, Tom Brady teams have been a key driver of competitive Super Bowls. In his Super Bowls, the final margins of victory/defeat were: 3, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 6, 8, 10, 22. Super Bowls 1-31 (through 1996): Major Blowouts (decided by 20+ points) - 9 (29%) Minor Blowouts (decided by 12-19 points) - 11 (35%) Fairly Close (Decided by 8-12 points) - 4 (13%) Close (Decided by 4-7 points) - 5 (16%) Extremely Close (Decided by 3 points or less) - 2 (6%) Net decided by 7 points or less (22%) Super Bowls 32-56 (since 1997): Major Blowouts (decided by 20+ points) - 4 (17%) Minor Blowouts (decided by 12-19 points) - 3 (13%) Decent Margin (Decided by 8-12 points) - 5 (21%) Close (Decided by 4-7 points) - 6 (25%) Extremely Close (Decided by 3 points or less) - 6 (25%) Net decided by 7 points or less (50%) |
