The Browns went from the franchise most fan bases had a soft spot for to public enemy #1. I don’t know if the Haslams are quite aware of the potential lasting effects from this.

Do you think they care the NFL owners were already pissed about Watsons contract before this shit all came out. They wrote the contract pro Watson knowing this would happen knowing this shitstorm was coming. If he had gotten 1 more week his salary would have been 1m now next year it jumps to 49m

I doubt the owners cared about the contract because of Watson’s off field conduct. It’s most likely more about what future elite QBs will demand now. I also imagine the other contracts that the other 3/4 teams in the mix were offering similar (minus the guarantee amount might not have been as high). Watson had turned them down before Cleveland upped it.

I also don’t think the contract was down entirely for Watson’s benefit for this year. Instead of making this year have $46m count against the cap, they made 45m be a signing bonus with only $1m against the cap. They did a similar thing with Amari Cooper’s contract when restructured it to have like his 18 million (around that number) to all but like 2.5 million become a signing bonus and only have a salary of 2.5 mil for this year be counted against the cap. This is why they still have $49m in cap space for this year.

Per Bleacherreport

Quote:
Not only was the six-game suspension for Deshaun Watson considered too light of a punishment, many were also upset about how his contract with the Cleveland Browns helps him financially.

Watson has a $1.035 million base salary in 2022, and he will lose about $344,655 from missed game checks from a six-game suspension. His nearly $45 million signing bonus will not be affected by any suspension.

According to Peter King of NBC Sports, the rest of the league has taken issue with the contract structure.

"One influential NFL person told me on this trip that it doesn’t sit well with the league or 31 other owners that the Browns rigged the Watson contract so that his suspension would cause him to lose only a fraction of his 2022 compensation," King wrote.

The five-year deal features a $46 million base salary in each of the next four years, while no guarantees can be voided by future suspensions, per Spotrac.

It's not uncommon for teams to get creative with contracts to reduce the cap hit. Tampa Bay Buccaneers star Tom Brady is scheduled to make $30 million in 2022, although he has just a $1.12 million base salary and $11.9 million cap hit, per Spotrac.

On the other hand, the Browns have $47.2 million in cap space available, more than double any other team in the NFL.

It seems Watson's deal was less about helping the team and more about reducing the impact of a likely suspension.

Everyone is, on every sports show going, i mean i don't think they could of done a single thing to make yesterday's dumpster fire any worse.

Also why does the NFLPA get a free pass here, i have not heard a single word about them! They are basically the reason for this punishment coinciding with his roster payments to have minimal impact and the league gets to no doubt flex that game to Sunday night, a win / win for them!

The league wanted to avoid any scenario of the union appealing and bringing owners into this discussion who have had issues of their own, they wanted this hole to stop getting bigger. Forcing a year on him and actually punishing him financially would of brought the union into this fight and clearly wanted no part of that.

Meanwhile Calvin Ridley indefinitely suspended for making a parlay bet for 1,500 at a sports book. Knowing this league today he probably freaking was able to place the bet at the stadium he plays at!

If this league keeps this an 11 game suspension i would put some money on that bet, who gives a flip about Dal vs SF, all attention and eyes will be on his return and why would the NFL not cash in on that, the damage is already done at this point, flexing that game is almost expected at this point imo.

While I thought that game would originally be buried at 1PM, I tend to agree and I'm starting to think that the NFL is gonna lean into it. There's no way they're gonna go through all this and then have that be his first game back only to sweep it under the rug. That being said, they're gonna mute the crowd and pipe in sound captured from the nether regions of that stadium cuz we all know the chants are going to be brutal and there's no way they're going to broadcast that.

no I get that and this was big news but I was more referring to the ignorant talk of religion

all this outrage talk, which is for sure justified, but the general public has a short attention span. Week 11 is a looooonnngggg ways away. Watson will lay low until then and this story, like so many others, will fade away until the next one comes along. Not saying this is right, its just how our society works. Folks will start talking in the week leading up to his return but if he and the team perform well, it'll start to take a backseat

idk man Cancel Culture has a way of creeping up when you least expect it. If the #MeToo movement regroups week 11 may be a very bad week for the NFL
