Lions docked seventh-round pick for anti-tampering violation

Following a review and a hearing, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell determined Friday that the Detroit Lions violated the league's anti-tampering policy by publicly commenting about their desire to acquire players then under contract to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Lions also were cited for impermissible contact with a player (or his agent) then under contract to the Chiefs. According to the Detroit Free Press, the player in question was safety Jarrad Page, whom the Chiefs traded to the New England Patriots last year.

Goodell decided on the following disciplinary action to resolve the matter:

» The Lions will forfeit their seventh-round selection (acquired from the Denver Broncos) in the 2011 NFL Draft.

» The Chiefs and Lions will switch fifth-round picks in the 2011 draft. As a result, Kansas City now owns the ninth selection in that round and Detroit the 23rd.

well, he sure hurt his chances of getting any big money as a free agent w/all of those drops.

i wouldn't mind seeing him stick around until driver retires and have him get a little more consistent and develop into a 2nd recv'r.

i just can't see thompson sigining a huge name free agent.

After about the 4th round you're not looking at a great deal of potential talent. The 7th round is pretty much irrelevant.

It's really depressing. I resorted to watching some NASCAR today... and despite living in Daytona I don't even care for it.

I understand what you are saying, but there is no sport like football. Greatest sport there is.

This is why I think the NFL and College football seasons shouldn't coincide. That way we only get 1-2 months of down time a year, not 6....

You really can't change college football's season. Can't start it later in the year or it runs through the dead of winter and you can't have it in summer since classes are out of session for the most part.

Start NFL in Jan-Feb then. It may even be possible with the current labor dispute. That way you can draft a lot sooner, like right after college season ends. And you can get the rookies into practice right away. No 6 month gap between end of college season and practicing with your future team.

I would assume people would rather have the beginning of the season chill rather than snow bowls in the playoffs or late season. That also opens up the possibility of Super Bowls in generally colder states sine the weather won't be freezing.

I think many would disagree. Playoff games in the cold are a major part of NFL history. And good luck playing games in Florida in the height of summer. The games would make The Epic in Miami look like a walk in the park. I'd love for college and pro football to not coincide, but it isn't feasible. I doubt it would do much for most fans anyway since NFL and College fans are two very different fan bases.

It would be especially interesting here in Florida. Playing games in 100 degree heat with 98% humidity would be a massacre. At the height of summer I can't even walk to my car for lunch without sweating.

I don't miss it that much yet. I need a break from it but you best believe in May/June/July I will be craving it again. Usually after March Madness and NBA playoffs is when I start really missing it. Then there will be only baseball. I love baseball but it is a drag at times. Last summer wasn't that bad because of the World Cup but this summer there will be no Olympics no World Cup it will be boring.

Atogwe visits with the skins finally a decent (not great move cause he is 29), but at least were getting players who actually fit the need of not only the system but position... Previous teams we'd have called Bob Sanders first.

Despite the NFLPA's stance that the franchise tag isn't valid for this season Steelers linebacker Lamarr Woodley has signed his franchise tender, and Panthers center Ryan Kalil said he plans to sign his tender before March 4 as well. This makes sense because both players have 4 years of service and it's possible they would have been restricted free agents depending on how the CBA works out, and if they were deemed restricted free agents they would be looking at $3 million tenders, rather than the $10 million they are getting as franchise players.
