The Washington Post confirms that foot specialists have informed free agent SS LaRon Landry he "needs" Achilles' tendon surgery.
The Washington Times had a report on this a few weeks ago. Landry doesn't want to have surgery, and he appears to be taking a sizable risk that rest and rehab will fix the heel problems. It's clearly against doctors' orders. The Redskins seem likely to part ways with Landry this offseason, particularly if he's not amenable to accepting a low-risk, short-term contract.

Last week the Rams announced plans to play a home game in London each of the next 3 seasons, starting next season against the Patriots. That plan could be in jeopardy because the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission says it's in the Rams lease that all home regular seasons games must be played in the Edward Jones Dome. The CVC says it informed the Rams of this but have not received a response.

The Boston Globe reports that Rob Gronkowski will likely need his injured left ankle scoped following the Super Bowl.
Beat reporter Shalise Manza Young confirms that Gronk will play in Super Bowl XLVI, but his ankle will need to be "cleaned up" due to apparent ligament damage. While the operation doesn't sound major, it's clear Gronkowski will be at less than full strength against the Giants. An early-game aggravation would certainly have the potential to impact the Super Bowl's outcome.

^Last I heard, the expectation was that Gronkowski's ankle injury is similar to Roethlisberger's high ankle sprain and that he suffered ligament damage that will need to be repaired.

Dolphins' Marshall talks to Flynn about teaming up in Miami

And from the sound of it, Marshall thinks he might just know which soon-to-be free agent could be the guy to provide the other end of the combo. The Dolphins wide receiver said he has reached out to Packers quarterback Matt Flynn and talked about the prospect of teaming up with Aaron Rodgers' backup.

"You've got some guys in the draft, but there's not too many guys out there just walking the streets," Marshall said. "Matt is available. ... We've talked. I reached out to him. I get it from Ray Lewis. Around this time of year, players talk to players."

As Marshall noted, it's not tampering for players to talk to players about such possibilities (the team doesn't know he did it, he said). The league confirmed that it's not a violation of any rules.

Marshall also praised the work of quarterback Matt Moore last season, saying he did an "outstanding job" and deserves to compete for the position in training camp. But he also noted that it's clear this team needs to find someone to take the Dolphins to the next level.

"Obviously, Matt had a great year," Marshall said. "You don't want to take anything away from Matt, but I think we really bring in somebody who can compete and make the team better.

"We need someone who is going to grab a hold of our offense, hold everyone accountable and be that leader."

I hope for his own sake Dolphins find a new QB because Moore won't throw to him anymore...

Moore is lousy and the 2012 draft isn't a deep QB draft with Jones and Barkley staying in school. Unless they want to give up a lot and trade up to get Griffin Flynn might be their best bet. Should be a nice upgrade from Moore.

Considering Flynn knows the new head coach very well and is obviously better than Matt Moore I would be shocked to see the Dolphins NOT go for him. Then they could use the draft to fill other holes and make a legitimate run at the AFC East.

I'd have no problem overpaying him a little bit, but no silly long-term contract a la Kevin Kolb please! Flynn hasn't proved anything yet.

Exactly. I see (unproven) free agents with good promise getting something like the new rookie contracts. 3 years, sub-$20 million.

Brian Billick was on the Jim Rome Show yesterday and he said he expects Flynn to get a contract comparable to Kolb's deal. I would be shocked if Flynn signs a deal worth less than $55 million over 5 years. The thing is only about $15 million of that will be truly guaranteed and it will be somewhat backloaded so if he flops the team could get rid of him after a year or two without too much damage.

Does anyone actually watch the Pro Bowl? I'm a big football fan but couldn't bare more than 10 minutes of the game last year. I'm just not interested in watching a game of what amounts to flag football where nobody cares. Won't be watching any of this year's game.

Aldon Smith arrested in Miami for DUI

In 18 total games during his rookie season, 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith bagged 16.0 sacks. But on Friday night, he was stuffed into the back seat of a cruiser.

According to CBSMiami.com, Smith was arrested Friday night for DUI.

The Miami-Dade County website shows that Smith remains in custody on $1,000 bond. Per CBSMiami.com, Smith has a bond hearing on Monday.

KTVU San Francisco reports 49ers OLB Aldon Smith has been arrested and charged with DUI in Miami Beach, Fla.
Smith was reportedly booked into jail at 9:32 AM Saturday morning. He is currently in custody on $1,000 bond. The NFL's rookie sack leader this season, Smith does not have a history of off-the-field issue. If Smith is convicted or pleads guilty, he'll likely be facing a league-mandated suspension.
