Well I'd say the fact that very few Ivy League players make it big in the NFL should tell you that brains only get you so far if you don't have the talent. As is, Ponder is not good enough, that could change with time, some QBs just need experience/seasoning but it says a bit that Ponder was supposed to be a 3rd or 4th round pick, Vikings really reached to get him.

Ponder got his undergraduate degree in finance in 2 1/2 years, then got an MBA, and was halfway to a masters degree in sports management when he left Florida State.

Santana Moss should be back, but similar to Morgan and Royal, missed major time last season. He's also 33. Jabar Gaffney is still under contract, but is 31 himself. Basically, the Redskins have a bunch of No. 2's and 3's. Who's gonna scare a defense, or be the playmaker when the team needs a top threat -- like division foes Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz in New York, or Miles Austin in Dallas? Speaking of Dallas, third receiver Laurent Robinson had more touchdowns (11) than Garcon, Morgan and Royal combined (8) last season.

Consider: The Redskins are paying Garcon and Morgan, neither of whom have ever had a 1,000-yard season, a combined $14.5 million per year (although Garcon's deal is backloaded). Marshall is far more effective than both, has played for Shanahan, is a guy a team must prepare for and costs a shade over $9 million per. If willing to look past Marshall's latest off-field issue, Washington could have made a deal for the big receiver, kept Moss and Gaffney and still signed a Garcon, Morgan or Royal. Then the club would carry a surefire No. 1 option, a solid 2, Moss at the 3 and veterans Gaffney and Anthony Armstrong for depth. They also could have spent some loot elsewhere.
Sigh

Philbin doesn't appear to be excited about Flynn, that's probably why the Browns backed off.

Anyway, good piece by Peter King on Matt Flynn: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/201...ynn/index.html

Quote:
Sitting in the LSU football special teams meeting room with Matt Flynn, watching the game of his life on tape: Green Bay 45, Detroit 41 -- Week 17, at a flurrying Lambeau Field -- trying to decipher whether he'll make a good starting quarterback for some team for the next six or eight years.
Quote:
Forget the garish numbers, the 480 yards passing and six touchdowns. His decision-making, his confidence, his ability to go no-huddle and call the plays himself (which is what the Green Bay system allows when the quarterback is going no-huddle), and his accuracy ... all of those traits are NFL-starter quality.
Quote:
Flynn got lucky in going to Green Bay. Mike McCarthy and aides Joe Philbin and Tom Clements are all good teachers of the quarterback position, and Rodgers a giving mentor. Flynn outplayed fellow draftee Brian Brohm as a rookie (Brohm was a second-round pick, Flynn a seventh-) and won the backup job to Rodgers. They became fast friends. Whereas Brett Favre never went out of his way to help Rodgers, Flynn became Rodgers' confidant. "Matt has soaked up so much, from me and the coaches,'' Rodgers told me last week. "He has grown so much as a player. Without a doubt he is ready. He has proven with his opportunities he know what is necessary to win. Players love him. Somebody's going to get a great football player in Matt.''

Their relationship is so good that when Flynn ran off the field midway through the fourth quarter after his fifth touchdown pass, Rodgers knew that he had tied the Green Bay record for touchdowns passes in a game -- a mark that he, Rodgers, shared. Said Flynn: "And Aaron looks me in the eye when I come off and he says: 'If you get the chance to go for six, you've got to go for it.' Now, does that say a lot about Aaron's character or what?''
Quote:
How can a team be expected to break the bank for him, even if he's a compelling figure because of how he played in those two starts?

"Totally understand,'' he said. "I know there will be people for me, and people against me, but you can't be defensive about it. I've always been a confident person about what I can do, and I am right now. Hopefully, I get to find that one team that wants me, and I can get to that team and prove to the 52 guys I share the locker room with that I'm worthy of being the guy they look up to as their quarterback. There's no question in my mind I can be.''
Quote:
Flynn just wants to find a home. He's not sure where that'll be. Maybe Miami with his former coach, Philbin. Or Seattle, with the GM, John Schneider, who was in the Packer personnel department when Green Bay drafted him in 2008. But I doubt Flynn will break the bank. This is not the time for him to do that. The time for him to get big money is after he proves he's a top-15 NFL starter in a year or two. If I'm Flynn, I'm looking for an unquestioned starting job now -- even if the money's not the motherlode.

"It's been a long month or so,'' Flynn said. "I'm ready to be out of the dark and on a team.''

Kyle Orton reached a three-year agreement with the Dallas Cowboys.

Not the signing I was hoping for(Carr) but it's definitely a good one, Orton will be a fantastic back-up to Romo that I hope never plays.

Still need to upgrade that defense and build up the offense a bit more around Megatron or you'll be making a hasty play-offs exit again next year. Playing in a 3 play-off team division doesn't help either.

I agree they need to build but for once the pieces are all there, get a few role players and there good to go

Buffalo and Mario Williams are still meeting as of around lunchtime. I'm really hoping that is a sign that he is very interested in us.

From the Buffalo News' Bills blog... this wasn't written by me, but it should've been.

"I should have called in sick today. Hows a guy suppose to focus on work while Mario Williams has the future of the franchise in his hands? Please sign on the dotted line before I either: A) get fired or B) pass out"

I can only imagine how bittersweet it is after seeing the Lions miss on (I believe) 3 straight 1st round pick WRs and then get Megatron, possibly the best WR in the NFL. Somewhere Matt Millen is probably sobbing like a little girl after seeing that contract get drafted.

There's no question he's got serious interest in Buffalo, as he reportedly took a physical and flew in his fiancee today. Williams has said he wants to visit some more teams but the Bills should do whatever it takes to get him signed before he leaves town.

This isn't confirmed, but from a source inside the Bills front office, but Buffalo has offered to make him the highest paid defensive player in the league. I'm sure that has a bit to do with things.

No bittersweet was the energy at Ford Field on our first Monday night game in 10 years. That night made me proud to be a Lions fan, reminded me of the days when we used to play Dallas until like 1am on Monday nights and squeak out the wins due to a Barry run, this time the crowd was the 12th man and it showed. Bitter sweet was seeing ourselves back in the playoffs, last year was bittersweet, this year its NFC championship game or bust. As a fan I will accept nothing less.

When is Stafford's contract up, if he has another season like last year, he is going to want the big bucks as well. I was so glad to see him have a great year, he seems like a good kid who had horrible injury luck his first couple years.

Keep "Ole' Glass Cannon" upright all season and I think the Lions will be in store for some great years.

Orton to Boys

Quote:
Cowboys land Orton with three-year deal

Cowboys signed QB Kyle Orton, formerly of the Chiefs, to a three-year contract.
Orton's first visit was his last. The money must be excellent, as Orton certainly could have found a better shot at starting if he let the quarterback market play out. He's an upgrade on the retiring Jon Kitna, who had long been one of the better backups in the league. Although many Cowboy fans will likely claim otherwise, Orton's signing should not be interpreted as any sort of a message to Tony Romo.

4/25/2009: Signed a six-year, $72 million contract. The deal contains $41.75 million guaranteed, including an $18.2 million signing bonus and an additional $8.475 million "signing" bonus in the third year. Another $6 million is available through incentives based on Stafford playing 35% of the offensive snaps as a rookie and 45% throughout the life of the deal. 2012: $11.5 million, 2013: $12 million, 2014: $11 million, 2015: Free Agent
