Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald says Alex Smith isn't truly interested in signing with Miami and wants to return to the 49ers, and will only sign with the Dolphins if San Francisco signs Peyton Manning, and that the Dolphins are aware of this. The Dolphins are scheduled to have former Jaguars QB David Garrard visit today.

Something tells me Smith is gonna catch it in the rear before this is all over!!!

He’s gonna wait on Manning and in the meantime Miami is gonna sign someone else.

Who is Miami going to sign? There is nobody left that is a viable option at starting quarterback. A team like the Dolphins cannot go into the season with Garrard as their starter, and he's the best free agent option other than Smith. I don't see Miami signing a QB until Manning signs because their best option may be a QB that is on whatever team Manning signs with. If Manning signs with Tennessee Miami could try and sign Hasselbeck (although he may decide to retire) and draft Tannehill at #8. If Manning signs with Denver I could see them trading (cheaply) for Tebow, who would guarantee a sellout for Miami, and maybe using a second or third round pick on a QB like Brandon Weeden, Kirk Cousins, or Nick Foles. If Manning ends up in San Fran I definitely see them ending up with Alex Smith.

I don't see why they need to sign anybody now that they lost out on the Manning sweepstakes. Matt Moore was serviceable and can be really good like his 14-2 year in Carolina. It's not like any of the other options are that much better.

Anyhow, I really think if they're going to draft Tannehill they should wait till the second round. I'm certain he will still be there.

If Miami is planning on drafting a QB anyway, why not save the money and shore up something else that needs attention and go w/moore for one more season??

I agree that Smith isn't much of an upgrade over Moore and isn't worth the price, but I haven't read a single thing that suggested the Dolphins were even considering starting the season with Matt Moore as their starter. Owner Steve Ross is tired of mediocrity and wants a change at QB, even though I don't it matters who is at QB since there's nobody to throw the ball to. The only way I see Miami sticking with Moore is if Manning signs with Tennessee and Hasselbeck has no desire to play for Miami, and even in that situation I could see the Dolphins bringing in Garrard to compete with Moore for the starting job and drafting Tannehill.

I guess Philbin wasnt that high on Flynn, and we have to trust him, he knows Flynn better than just about anyone out there. Like someone said: "Flynn this year is like Orton last year. If the Dolphins really thought either one was "the guy", they would've made it happen."

Signing a QB just for the sake of it is not very smart. Last time I checked, we went 6-3 in our last 9 games with Matt Moore. This could also mean that Mike Sherman is in love with Tannehill. That's too bad, from what I've been reading, Melvin Ingram would have been a great pick at #8.

I would love to see Konz in blue and silver, think he'd solidify the middle of our line and give us one of the best offensive lines in the league since we're already set at OT.

According to the Denver Post, the Dolphins are currently negotiating a contract with free agent Alex Smith that would pay him $8 million annually.
The Dolphins are so desperate, after losing out on Peyton Manning and Matt Flynn, that they're now willing to significantly overpay a borderline NFL starter at near the level of franchise quarterback money. Flynn only got $6.33M annually from the Seahawks. Smith isn't as physically talented as incumbent Dolphins starter Matt Moore, and he's certainly not worth more than Flynn. At this point, it's almost as if the Fins are trying to sign a quarterback, just to sign a quarterback.
