ray, I don't think we'll see 800nits from the upcoming 77" 4K OLED. Not sure what window size they are using, but any window size % on a 77" OLED panel would be a tall order for 800 nits. But with the 0 MLL OLED will deliver a far better and more pleasing HDR image than LCD can do.

I commented on your post with my explanation of how I hypothesized my thinking here.

Very interesting and important subject. I hope I explained well.

Recent Flatpanels article about the LG CES 2016 OLEDS stated that LG engineers promised twice the peak luminance of 2015 panels.

"As for HDR, LG said that "light level will be increased a lot" and even goes so far as to say "nearly two times". Today, LG's OLED TVs can achieve a maximum brightness of about 400 nits"

http://www.flatpanelshd.com/focus.ph...CWRe6Ekes33.99

And, there is this:

"As already pointed out the CZ950 can achieve a bright 450cd/m2 maximum brightness on-screen

https://www.avforums.com/review/pana...d-review.11860

The Panasonic uses an LGD panel, so it is reasonable to expect an 800 nit display from LG at CES 2016. Perhaps a 65" rather than the 77"

It will be displayed in LG's 2016 CES exhibit and announced at the press conference the day before the CES exhibits open.

LG's new 55" and 65" Flat 4K OLED TVs are selling extremely well and supply can't keep up with sales. I expect that will be the case well into 2016 and we may see the current $1,000 instant rebate go away.

Mike, sorry my contacts are mostly with LG USA so they don't know about other regions. Sorry this is not available in NZ yet, and I hope they bring it in as all NZ enthusiasts would love this display!

I don't need a brighter panel than what the 9500 delivers. I hope they spend just as much, if not more, time fixing the grayscale. There are times when it just ain't pretty (read: uniform). The only available HDR content (on Amazon) is ruined by the grayscale banding whenever there are darker scenes.

You may not need a brighter panel, but the UHD Alliance has completed their specifications for UHD Premium Certification and it is likely that the 2015 LG OLEDs won't make the cut. The 2016s will be brighter (nearly twice as bright according to LG engineers). We will know Jan 4 when the UHD Alliance reveals the specifications at CES 2016.

The current brightness already hurts my eyes...

Besides, it's immaterial to me and should be to anyone who is seriously seeking out one of these and intends to watch in a darkened environment, at least until they improve the manufacturing process to fix the near black problems.

In fact, the HDR I've seen accentuates the defects near black (banding in this case).

Ridley Scott and Co. to do Super Bowl commercial featuring CES 2016 LG OLED Display:

"Doing it for love

LG is keen to point out, though, that the Scotts’ involvement with the OLED Super Bowl commercial is not merely a business arrangement. The Scotts are also apparently very enthusiastic about OLED TV technology – so much so that they were both willing to go on record with their views on OLED TV when LG broke its big Super Bowl 50 commercial news.

“When I first saw OLED TV,” enthuses Ridley Scott, “I was mesmerized by its staggering picture quality.” And son Jake had this to say: “With 1984, audiences were introduced to a technological advancement that promised to change everything, and I see a similar kind of disruption with LG OLED TV.”

Exclamation 55" & 65" EF9500 prices go up $1k each

Hope it's ok to post this here, but I wanted to give forum members a heads-up on the expiration of LG's $1k discount on there 4K OLED TVs. Please delete or move this post if it's not allowed.

Just 24 hrs to go before all Flat and Curved 55" and 65" LG 4K OLED TV prices go up $1,000.

On Saturday, December 26, 2015 LG's $1,000 instant rebate ends so the 55EF9500 will go up to $3,999 and the 65EF9500 will sell for $5,999. So for anyone on the fence this is your window of opportunity to take advantage of LG's last day of LG's $1k discount. This effects all authorized LG dealers and even non authorized dealers costs.

We're staying open Saturday to immediately process all orders to beat the deadline. So call your favorite authorized dealer to get your order placed no later than Saturday, December 26th.

If we miss anyone you can PM or email me and I'll process all orders that come in by midnight on Saturday, 12/26. We can process the payment Monday, but the order must be placed by the end of 12/26/15

Happy Holidays to all!

Samsung and LG are enemies. Sony buys Samsung panels.

So, unless Samsung joins the OLED arena...

When do most here think a middle-of-the-line, 60" OLED 4K UHD TV will be less than $2K? That's when I get off the fence and replace the plasma -- and get a UHD BD player.

Could this be the list of new 2016 displays that will be introduced at CES 2016?

EK and EJ are probably LG OLEDs. Notice the 8K sets:

I dream the same, but for now the only viable OLED technology for screen sizes above 50" is LG's OLED WRGB.

BTW, I see some folks still mistakenly calling Eastman Kodak's original OLED display technology RGBW and this is not even close to how the WRGB OLED pixel array is laid out. LG employees WRGB OLED and it's far superior to RGBW.

For the next few years we'll see 55", 65" and 77" OLED TVs. However, the ultra thin bezels makes the overall dimensions on LG's 65" OLED to be the same as most 60" TVs. So you get about 16% more sq. inches in the same form factor.

These nomenclatures do not match what I expect the 2016 OLED offerings. Also 8K displays will be limited to LCD panels, no 8K OLED in 2016.

I also see folks calling 8K FUHD, but the correct term for 8K displays is "Super Hi-Vision". I assume some consumer manufacturers may call 8K FUHD, but I hope we stick to the correct established terms to avoid any confusion and to help the public understand what these new displays actually are. Multiple names just makes things more confusing.

I also see speculation that LG will discontinue 3D on the 2016 OLED TVs and I can assure everyone that is not happening.

I'll be posting directly from LG's press conference that is scheduled for 8:00 AM PST on Tuesday, January 5, 2016. Sorry I'm not a member at one other forum, so tune into Blu-ray.com for the latest and most accurate information. Any other questions for now?

8K displays are normally prototype displays at CES, however I have my doubts that 8K displays will be released to the consumer market anytime soon. Consumers are still waiting for the launch of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format in order to watch 4K material on their new 4K displays (especially in rural areas where the Internet is to slow for 4K streaming). 8K displays will only be useful if a 8K optical disc format or 8K streaming service launches. Or if a native 4K 3D system is developed for use with 4K resoultion for each eye using passive glasses (Current Blu-ray 3-D system is 1080P for each eye).

Watching native 1080P material on a native 1080P display has better picture quality when compared to upscaling to 4K since there are sometime artifacts when upscaling. A native 4K source material will look better on a native 4K display when compared to upscaling to 8K. Over time upscaling technology improves, however I am not interested in an 8K display unless I can someday purchase native 8K movies. If we see a native 8K optical disc format launch it might not be until sometime around the year 2026. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format launching in 2016 might be the last consumer optical disc format. By then 10Gbps or faster Internet will be the norm and 8K movies will be available for download and streaming. I just do not see the streaming providers like Netflix and VUDU offering 8K anytime soon. Maybe under ideal conditions in 2020+ 8K streaming could start. There are already over a 100 cities in the United States that offer 1Gbps residential Internet service and a few cities with residential 10Gbps Internet.

It would be neat if 7680 x 4320P movies were available to purchase. New 8K HDMI transmission system would need to be developed. Also new A/V receivers that pass 8K to new 8K displays would need to be developed. The industry is just starting to go 4K with HDCP 2.2. Broadcasters, cable companies, and most satellite companies have not even made the switch to 4K signal deliver yet. Around 2026 is when 8K will be more of a reality

Thanks HDTV1080P. I understand and mostly agree with all you said. Hope it did not sound like I was promoting 8K displays.

The only item I think we may be in slight disagreement is that good 1080 content, like most BDs do look great on 4K TVs and in my analysis they deliver a better image than 1080p TVs.

One more tidbit to know is that 8K standards will use the newly adopted HDR, WCG and 10-12 bit panels with PQ digital gamma. So it's only a change in pixel resolution and will be applied to ultra large screens and will mostly benefit with 1x screen size viewing distance.

One of the things I like seeing is the advancement of consumer display technology and 8K is just one more example that demonstrate the advancement of our beloved passion.
