Unfortunately, VUDU Dolby Vision content is still not working on the 2016 LG sets. Ask VUDU why they're not properly supporting Dolby Vision compatible LG TVs.
We don't know when/if that'll ever change.

So no final decision at this moment.
I was referring to the Panasonic UB900 UHD Player that is already sold over here in Europe.

Well if you compare to a Full HD set that also uses passive 3D then the resolution gain is very noticeable.

I'm looking at both the 2015 65EF9500 and the 2016 OLED65E6P. Can anyone help explain if/why the 2016 is better and worth the extra $1500 currently? I see that the 2016 has HDR Pro, but I'm not sure if that translates to normal Directv or standard Blu-ray watching, since that is what it will mainly be used for at this point.

Their are several advantages on LG's 2016 4K OLED line-up.

First, they fixed all of the anomalies so no more vignetting, screen uniformity is greatly improved as is color fidelity.

The 2016 4K OLEDs are about 50% brighter than the 2015 EF9500 and this helps with all content.

The 2016 4K OLEDs are HDR10 and Dolby Vision capable. So for streaming Netflix and Amazon Video you will enjoy Dolby Vision HDR with a lot more to come this year and beyond.

Hope the helps.

Hi Robert,

Any word of calibration standards on the way for HDR and DV? I've heard DV will make this easier.

No final workflow at this moment, but a lot of progress in calibration equipment and test patterns. Yes, Dolby Vision will be easier and more accurate as they send extra metadata on how the content was mastered and other luminance values so the display can be properly set-up and tone mapped.

We'll be speak more about HDR calibration at our June 22 - 23 TV Shootout. For now the best thing we can do to improve HDR quality is adjust the Grayscale tracking to meet the D65 white point.

Robert, if no Ultra HD Blu-ray player supports Dolby Vision, then why would Sony release Dolby Vision 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray titles?

Robert sorry for my mistake, I thought some of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players were going to offer 4K streaming with HDR using Dolby Vision. Ideal for a 4K projector with HDR.

Robert you are correct that the Samsung UBD-K8500 does not support Dolby Vision. If no current Blu-ray player supports Dolby Vision then that means that any 4K streaming app from Netflix and VUDU will not provide HDR support. This also means it makes no sense to release 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray titles with Dolby Vision since HDR10 is the format of choice for all 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray titles.

There are two prominent (but not identical) high dynamic range formats now used commercially, Dolby Vision and HDR10. The Samsung player supports only HDR10, the format used in all of the first HDR-enhanced UHD discs. The UBD-K8500 will also play standard Blu-rays, DVDs,and CDs.”

Not sure Sony Pictures will release Dolby Vision 4K BD discs, but for cinema they are supporting DV. Also we don't know the spec's of the upcoming Sony and OPPO BD players and I am urging them to support DV. If for nothing else they would be popular for streaming DV to projectors and Sony is interested in doing that to support their 4K projectors.

Well I think they'd still play in HDR 10 PQ, and when everything is in place (DV-disc|DV-player|DV-UHDTV) you'll get all the DV-goodness from the disc.

Totally unacceptable that VUDU would only allow you to use only one brand TV Vizio to stream Dolby Vision movies. LG OLED is capable so why don't they add LG OLED TV's just doesn't make any sense to me. I don't want to have to use any kind of box to stream content when the LG OLED is capable of streaming this content.

I think the exclusive agreement expires shortly and VUDU 4K DV HDR will be available on LG's 4K Super LED and OLED TVs shortly.

I'm excited to see where the 2017 OLED range goes once all the dust settles on these HDR and 4k UHD competing standards that seemed to have cropped up.

Plus, the input lag is almost to my VT20 Plasma level and once a few more things get dialled in, think it'll be time to upgrade. Probably wait till PS5 drops to upgrade though cause of better pricing lol

Robert, any chance you could bring up the contents of this article next time you meet up with LG? Or discuss it at the shootout?

My german E6 hasn't even been delivered yet and this comes up. This reminds me of the EG9600 situation where only the newest builds are able to handle HDR via HDMI.
Did LG learn and prepare the HDMI boards of the 2016 sets for an update to HDMI 2.0b/HDMI 2.1? Let's hope so.

Very good question/issue and I'll follow it up.

Dynamic metadata and including peak luminance metadata is one of the biggest advantages to Dolby Vision and I hope this comes to fruition. Hopefully software can be implemented on HDMI 2.0a/HDCP 2.2 TVs

Isn't Dolby Vision fully supported all the way back to HDMI 1.4, including dynamic metadata? The risk seems to be that this ends up being the one generation of TVs that doesn't support dynamic metadata in HDR10, and future content ends up largely supporting HDR10 with dynamic metadata in lieu of Dolby Vision. If Samsung is indeed going to update their sets to support HDMI 2.1, I do hope LG had the same foresight this time around.

From a consumer perspective, it's a little annoying always having a major development (4k, HDMI 2.0, HDCP 2.2, HDMI 2.0a, HDMI 2.0b, HDMI 2.1, etc.) around the corner. It seems like the developments and/or support for said developments have really been trickling out over the past 4 years, rather than coming in complete, fully realized increments (i.e. first full HDMI 2.0 + HDCP 2.2 support — no mixing and matching — and then HDMI 2.1 with full dynamic metadata, rather than 2.0a getting the HDR but missing what seems like a pretty important piece to make it really work across sets of all capabilities).

I will admit, I ordered an E6. I thought HDMI 2.1 was a little farther off (as in may not even be fully ratified until after the first crop of 2017 sets), but the latest news puts that into question. Whether or not LG has a satisfactory answer in the next couple weeks may very well determine whether I hold onto the set or wait until next year and/or a definite answer.

@ chaos215bar2, I'm working on this issue with the right folks and I'll post an update as soon as possible.

@ mikezilla2, we've tested the E6 and found all of the image quality attributes to be the same as the G6 so you can rely on the G6 reviews for how the E6 performs.

@ Robert Zohn, much appreciated!

Now, to enjoy the E6 that literally just walked in the door. Hey, who knows, maybe the in-house SOC they apparently had to use in the E6 and G6 makes it just a little more likely they made sure to include any hardware that might be necessary for the next HDMI revision, if it's indeed right around the corner. But now I'm just speculating.

Can you share your peak brightness results for a 65" E6? The G6 had 744 nits but a 55E6 was measured at 596 in the UK for HDTVTest. Perhaps they were using different methods if everything should be the same.
