Watch 4, 5, and 6 and skip the prequels (although I don't think they're as bad as everyone makes them out to be).

45236 seems like a good order. Episode 1 you actually don't really need to see at all.
I've also heard people say that you could exchange Episode 2 for the Clone Wars series (or at least watch it after Episode 2), but I haven't seen that so...
But yeah, 45236 should be good.

Agreed. The prequels just ruin the magic of the originals. So don't even bother. And make sure you seek out the unaltered versions. The altered ones are baffling in the horrible decisions made.

Belongs in that bloated Star Wars Saga thread.

With the changes made to the original trilogy, you can't really watch them in any way without being confused/disappointed IMO. At least if you go by trilogy (either 456123 or 123456) I haven't really thought of watching them like GC Riot describes...

If going trilogy wise you'll run into this (and there is a reason for the SPOILER tag, you've been warned!)
[Show spoiler]If you watch 3 before 5 you'll already know the big surprise before it happens. If you watch 6 before the original trilogy, the way Darth look at the end with Yoda and Ben will be... strange!

I think it depends on how much you already know about the series. If you don't know any of the plot twists, I think you should watch them in their release order -- 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3. If you have been spoiled on the plot twists, then if you were to start with the prequel trilogy, you would knock out the two worst entries (1 and 2) and only have better films to look forward to.

Watch all in the order they were released. The prequels are not that good, but they're worth seeing at least once. I'd also recommend The Clone Wars tv series

Didn't somebody with your exact same user pic ask this exact same question not too long ago?

Well, whatever. For a first-time viewing, I'd recommend this order: 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6. That way, you treat the prequels as one giant flashback, and still preserve the integrity of the original movies' storytelling.

If you're getting uncertain about seeing all six with all the prequel hate that floats around, just watch 4, 5, 6 first. If you like it and want more, then see 1, 2, 3, and whatever else you want, and make up your own mind.

I'm one of the pro-chronological order people, so I vote 1-6. If nothing else, it'd be interesting to hear what a first-time viewer thought when experiencing the saga that way.

I'm not sure anyone could handle that much Attack of the Clones.

4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3 seems to work the best IMHO.

The trouble with that, to be controversial, is you end up on one of the weakest films of all 6, Jedi. It has it's moments, but doesn't really work for me anymore as a film. I'd much rather end on 3.

Just stick to 4,5,6 and 1,2,3. There's a reason the OT is loved and the sequels not so much and that's the order we had to watch them in.

Good memory, Al. He asked the same question back in August in the Star Wars thread and got plenty of answers, beginning right on the same page as his original post. Nearly seven months later and he still hasn't watched them and asks the exact same question, and in its own thread, no less?

From the Star Wars thread this past summer:

Anyway, I believe 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3 is best. However, if someone has the time on their hands, I would go:

4, 5, 6 UOT (theatrical versions)

then:

1-6 (Prequels then SE versions of 4-6)

If its your first time then I guess 456123.

However I prefer to watch 123456. I don't mind the prequels but come on do you really want to end the saga at ep3?
