Watching the visuals in The Last Jedi, especially, got me thinking of the OT themselves -- Firstly how George Lucas is out of the picture that we can be rest soundly he can't mess with the OT anymore! BUT secondly, having seen how amazing the CGI is handling creating that nostalgic OT feel while still looking polished, epic, modern as possible...
Here is a "what if?" for you all to rabidly debate, counter with your own preferences, or dismiss as folley; **OT theatrical re-release concept** -- After the main saga is over and the Rian Johnson trilogy and standalones continue, say in 5 or 10 years could the world embrace a CGI/fx updated OT? It's plausible they could put $100M easy into each to totally update with CG around scanned OCN elements for cinema re-release? One per year. Dolby Vision. 4K native CGI. Immersive audio... The whole smash. Potential billions of $$$ on that investment in theaters. My argument for this path from Disney is this... I don't want them to reboot star wars OT storylines just to make it modern and make money, and I think most purists would agree -- But I'm a realist and they won't be able to resist to cash in on the OT brand. Maybe sooner than we imagine -- [Show spoiler] Most importantly discarding all the horrendous Lucas changes 'n' tinkering in the process.Caveat: Lucasfilm/Disney does the purists a solid releasing the UOT on home video for them and for posterity in UHD quality -- This is to me a 'best of all worlds'. Youth today can really get into the OT in a fashion they're used to. Disney can make a billion on it or more. We can all head off a cringy reboot reality WHILE getting whichever version on UHD we want...or both. |

It doesn't need to be fixed.
Would you go in and fix The Wizard of Oz to have better looking tornadoes? A more realistic shark in Jaws? CGI Birds? |

So, you're bashing Lucas for making changes to the OT, while proposing that Disney make changes to the OT in the future. Sure, great idea.

Oh yes.... JL did enough we REALLY don't need Disney and their genius ideas messing with the OT. They've already ruined SW.

![]() ![]() The decision to release the theatrical cuts are still up to Lucas, he very likely retained final cut privileges over his movies when he sold the company, so yes, he can also change them if he wants to and forbid corporations from changing his movies without his consent. Fortunately, I might add. Yeah, the irony is strong with this one. |

The original theatrical cuts of the OT are historical film documents that should be able to be appreciated by fans of cinema. I have never had an issue with Lucas going back and tinkering with them, nor would I if Disney did anything similar. I will always see a new cut of any of the OT films out of curiosity as a Star Wars fan. But the fact that the original theatrical versions are not made available to fans on dvd, blu-ray, 4K or digital doesn’t make sense to me. They were incredible achievements at the time of their release and a part of cinema history that deserves far better than to be locked away in some vault somewhere.

They can update every Star Wars movie and it wouldn't bother me one bit. I'll check them out. I didn't like the special edition changes George made, but I am open to checking out something new. The only thing I would ask is please release the unaltered originals that I grew up with for 20 years before the special editions.
I don't see any new changes happening anytime soon, because I don't think Kathleen Kennedy would want to alter George's work. She most likely considers the special editions his definitive work, so that is probably why we won't see the originals anytime soon either, but i would be happy to be wrong. |

There are already far too many versions of Star Wars. Disney should just give both the UOT, and Lucas' final versions, full restorations, and make both available to own.
I don't think we need to worry about remakes of the OT. Disney isn't going to stop adding to the current saga. And the overall brand crashing and burning enough to require a full reboot is literally decades away, if ever. |
