^ just to add to The Martian gumbo, the ASC interview with Wolski from the November 2015 issue confirms that it was *originally* finished at 2K using 2192x1156 extractions. It also confirms that Sony's The Walk (also shot by Wolski) was definitely finished at 2K for both the 2D and 3D (duh) versions.

The 4k uhd disc can only be as good as the cameras used. Whether the cameras were set at 6k or cropped to 5k, its still above 4k and will look amazing on disc, especially after hdr grading. That's my whole point. There's this notion going around that because this movie has a 2k DI that anything and everything you will see on a uhd disc is 2k upscaled to 4k. I haven't seen the blu ray, but everyone says that its a very clean looking version and this ultimately comes back to the cameras used, and both red epic/scarlet cameras are high quality 6k cameras.
There's a scene in the martian where Matt Damon is talking to his camera inside the Rover and your looking up at Matt Damon from the cameras view, who cares if that particular camera wasn't 4k? The best scenes in the movie use the best cameras, period. And I'm going to assume this is the case for every movie. |

100% agreed, and hopefully if we can push these studios they will make that information more readily available. If they don't use this method for all movies then I think we will be cheated out-of or money. We pay for the best product so we should get it.

And how they are used. To put *detail* (which we’ve been discussing in past pages) into perspective, this paper by Pierre of Technicolor Hollywood is highly recommended reading material…..http://ieeexplore.ieee.org:80/Xplore...sp?reload=true
P.S. If that link didn’t go thru with your browser then plug in the author search Pierre Hugues Routhier. Last edited by Penton-Man; 01-22-2016 at 02:06 AM. Reason: added a P.S. |

Oh. It would've helped if you'd quoted the actual post where I asked you to ask him. I'm a bit dense like that.
![]() Thanks though, it just underlines what I said: even starting with 'only' 2.8K into a 4K finish will still give an appreciable benefit over a 2K finish (which will lose fully half the pixels from the 2.8K capture, never mind the more recent 3.4K Open Gate mode).
