Around July 2007 I bought a refurbished 80 GB PS3 from Game Stop. ($449+tax) The brand new 60GB was $499 at the time. The refurbished had two controllers and was backwards compatible( selling point for me!) The machine has been a good machine until recently. Needless to say no extended warranty, I'm cheap!, and now the problems begin.

About a month ago the PS3 would load more slowly than usual, and two weeks ago it began to freeze. Two days ago, it stopped playing anything blu-ray, including game! It will still read DVD format, including PS2 games.

I'm just trying to cope with the idea that I have to fork over another $149+tax to Sony for what appears to be a hardware malfunction. Hell they'll probably just clean the damn lens and send it back! I doubt its the lens, because it still reads the before mention formats, but is it true some systems have two lenses? Has anyone here ever accomplished cleaning the lenses themselves? Thanks in advance for feedback.

Default Pissed about my PS3!! Any ideas?!

I revived on older thread that appeared to at least address the problem I believe I'm experiencing. I wasn't sure if the older thread would get much attention, so I created this one. I really am pissed about my console!

First off that is what happens when you buy use a game console
if I was you I would buy a new one because you can download the backwards compatible off of PSN.

I appreciate your response and your position, but frankly, I'm pissed about coughing up repair money, needless to say, buying a new console isn't in the budget at this point.

Thanks for your response with the link. If I decide to undertake the task of repairing it myself, I'll let you know how it turns out, if you're interested?

I purchased the 80GB console (Motorstorm bundle) new in Feb 2008, in January of this year it stopped reading any and all Blu-Rays... sent in under warranty and they replaced the Blu-Ray laser... then six-months to the day after it was received back it shut down while playing a game and refuses to turn back on...

I'm in the middle of the trade in process and had to actually speak to a manager about the "we will replace it with a similar model" speak... I was finally guaranteed that if it cannot be repaired it will be replaced with a refurbished of the same model number (which means no loss of backwards compatibility, SACD, USB ports, or card reader) and was told if it is returned without the hard drive it would not be serviced, in direct contrast to what the owner's manual states (page 16) "To help protect your personal information, remove the hard drive prior to submitting for service"

After the manager placed me on hold for some time he came back to the phone and had apparently tracked down a copy of the owner's manual, because he finally did agree to honor what the Owner's Manual states.

We do use it on a daily basis, primarily as a media server, with games and Blu-Rays being close runner-ups, but as quite a few of my co-workers (and people on this forum) leave it on 24/7 folding, or simply sitting idle and have not had the issues I have had... Basically what I am saying is that buying it used has nothing to do with when parts will crap out...

Thanks for the good post. You bring up a great point about the contents of your hard drive. I can say that my console was only used for gaming and movies, nothing personal that I wouldn't want others to to get. I am guilty still of leaving my system on 24/7, my wife claims that was the cause of its demise, but the console should be able handle constant use IMO. I do wonder if overheating was a factor though, it always seemed to produce alot of heat. Storing it flat on a shelf, INSIDE a entertainment cabinet, may not be a good idea. I was sure it had proper ventilation though.

I'm considering undertaking the repairs myself, I'm no longer under warranty, what do I have to lose really. I can get the new lens for $68 bucks over the net. 30 day warranty. Worst case scenario I end up sending to Sony for repairs anyway.

Reading through all the last couple of posts, I can certainly understand the frustration regarding what has happened to the posters' PS3 situations. My 60GB PS3 that was sent to Sony over a year ago for repairs (under warranty) was returned to me as a refurb unit. After experiencing a YLOD situation with that refurb and then having JDElectronics fix the YLOD, I received the unit back with another issue that JDElectronics couldn't fix. I got my money back from JD and had to bite the bullet and have Sony fix my refurb unit for the $150 tag. I got my same unit back, problem fixed, and despite the $150 bite, I got a working PS3 back.

Basically, I have nothing negative to say about my experience. The PS3 is an electronic device, and like most devices, will wear down and break as time goes on. Most of us either have the option of fixing the prob ourselves or sending it to Sony to fix. Not being technically-inclined, I opted to pay Sony for the repair work and I now have a working PS3 again. The process that we have to endure to get a broken PS3 back to working status sucks, sure, but we as consumers should acknowledge that Sony does offer us options (whether in-warranty or out-of-warranty) if we experience the casualty of a broken PS3 just as they would with any of their other electronic products (TVs, CD players, receivers, computers, etc.). Yes, it sucks, but it could be far worse.

My main ps3, a 40 gig, was having the fan come on into overdrive mode after 10 min or so of anything strenuous (HD movie streaming, ps3 games, folding @ home, etc). I called sony, they did a warranty repair for me and i got a refurb in the mail. Plug in refurb, and no joke, 2 minutes into turning it on, the fan goes on FULL BLAST mode worse then the previous one. Pissed, i called sony, told them to send me a system up front and ill mail this one back, he said he would try. Of course they didnt, they sent me another box and a week later i got another refurb ps3.

Unlike all the other refurb ps3s ive gotten, this one says "QC Approved" with a gold sticker on it. Ive never seen that on the 10 or so refurbs ive received from sony. So looks like they keep a stack of working systems for people who've had multiple issues, and send crappy refurbs to first timers hoping they wont care. Anyway, this PS3 has been folding @ Home for 24 hours, playing games like uncharted/infamous and streaming hd movies for hours, and its as loud as it was while it was in the box it came in, dead silent.

I was thinking the same thing when I got a refurb 60GB after sending in my original store-bought 60GB and it YLOD'ed on me. I got the same refurb unit sent back to me repaired but the fan is about as loud as a jet engine. We shall see.

Can you load PS3 games?

Any help would be appreciated. tried to restart but doesn't seem to matter.

I have a 2nd PS3 in the bedroom hooked up to a Vizio 32" LCD via HDMI.

Recently, I've noticed that when turning on the PS3, or starting a game or playing a movie, all I get is a blue screen on the Vizio, with a "No Signal" message. I know the PS3 is on and functioning, and this happens VERY rarely, but enough that it's annoying.

Is this an HDCP handshake issue? Would it help to swap out HDMI cables?

Amazing what kids can do! There is a thread that shows you how to take the drive apart to change the laser, I'm sure this is what you'd need to do to try to get them out. Hopefully nothing is damaged.

Thread is called "Tips and Tricks". Use caution though, obviously.

I'd follow the instruction of the previous poster. Please let us know what it took to fix when you get them out!

Best of Luck! -- Good news is that a replacement will only cost you $299 now!
