I used some compressed air a few days before this started happening (didn't actually vacuum), but it was quickly cleaned out.
It is in an open tv stand - no front or backing, so it couldn't get much more ventilated. It shouldn't be an overheating issue - plus, it seems very intermittent. It went a few days after the intial 3 in a row - then happened again while playing music of all things. It's very cool in the house as well. Yeah, I probably need to do a back up. It's a 60 gig launch - I'd hate to see it go. |

Mine was also a launch day 60GB and I really hoped it would last another 40 years or so.
I was planning on the laser eventually needing to be replaced and sort of looking forward to doing that. Lots of launch day 60GB are dying these days. My warranty was 3 years till mid-Nov so I'm glad mine went now vs later. There is a youtube video that shows a "fix" for the YLOD. Basically the fella takes his PS3 completely apart and then using a heat gun to reflow the solder on the CPU and GPU. If you pay attention you will hear him mention it's the second time he's doing this. Those chips are BGA (Ball Grid Array) which means the chips have a array of tiny balls on the bottom usually a few thousandths of an inch apart. The board under then gets "printed" with little drop of solder and then the board goes through a special oven that does the soldering. I used to work in a plant that did this and it's a highly precise process. In short... if mine was out of warranty and had this problem, I would not be heating it up in hopes of fixing it. Some people on Ebay sell a repair service where they take you PS3 and do just what the fella did in the video. It can work but chances are best that it won't work for long. So... If you're out of warranty in my view you've got these choices... 1) Send to Sony for $150 exchange (I would do this one.) 2) Sell it "as is" and use whatever you get towards buying a new or used PS3 3) Try the home brew fix or pay someone to do this for you. (I would never try that.) 4) ...??? I don't know ... I can't imagine any choices that involve not having a PS3 once you've had one. Life is too short to live without a PS3. ![]() =Brian |

Hey,
My YLOD PS3 should be arriving for exchange in Texas today (yippee!). But it died so quickly that I never got a chance to de-activate the master account on it. I logged into my my account on the playstation website and see an option to activate/deactivate PSN hardware but nothing for the PS3. Does anyone know how I would let Sony know that I no longer have that PS3... Assuming they are going to send me a different unit which I think is a given. -Brian |

Ok.
I'll go look for the number .... maybe it's in the first post of this thread? edit- 1-800-345-7669... Can't get to a person on that line yet though. (Turns out dialing 0 works.) Edit 2 - Here's how it's done if you have your PS3 and it's only part way dead. ![]() http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-...p_sid=t2dmiyLj Final Edit- Sony says to just wait till I'm all setup with the exchange unit and then call in with the service number from the exchange and they can de-activate the other machine at that time. -Brian Last edited by bhampton; 10-28-2009 at 02:27 PM. |

I was about to come and ask about this myself - I went to back up my game saves last night and got the red blinking light - but this time, it didn't come back up. I really don't under stand about activating/de-activating the master account. But it looks like you are saying, get your PS3 set up, get back online and then give them a call to get your accounts set back up? Know I just have to remember all those passwords. . . ![]() |

Hope you didn't have a disc in there.
You may want to remove the hard drive and re-format it before sending it in for service. (Or you may not... I did just in case there was anything personal still on there... family photos, home movies, whatever.) You can have 5 PS3's activated and so it's not likely a big deal but you have to de-activate it from the XMB. They said they could do it for me though but later after I have my account setup on the replacement unit. -Brian |

![]() Luckily, it wasn't a rented movie! ![]() So, if I go get a new PS3 (I was thinking about picking up a slim) - since this is only my second PS3 ever - do I have to still get my old one deactivated? Also, is there number 24/7 - or is this something you have to do on a weekday during work hours? Sucks I have to find all my password info again. Hope I have it somewhere. Was there a password associated with the Master Account? As for the hardrive - I'll probably put the old 60 gig back in and take out my 250 gig. Right now, the plan is to just get a new slim, and then send in my 60 gig later and then use it in another room. |

no. Cymbol can work on 5 PS3's, and 1 time for videos. I had to deacitvate mine because i have my PSN on more than 5 PS3's. (family, 3 mine, 1 fiance, 1 brother)

![]() Turn off the ps3 at the back. Hold down the eject button & switch it backon from the back (holding the eject button the whole time). Your ps3 will run its fan at top speed to blow out the dust (a self clean) and eject any disks that are inside. I did this to eject a disk after getting the ylod. Hope this helps you out. |

I did get my 250 gig hard-drive out and installed the original 60 gig back in, so when it gets fixed - they'll wipe out my old data anyway. So, the plan is:
Does this plan sound doable? Or am I missing anything? ![]() Also, I see that most of the new PS3s only have 2 USBs ![]() |

For your second question, my Rock Band 2 adapters have two usb ports on the side so I plug everything in there. All 3 adapters are only using 1 USB. Hope this helps ![]() |

Any USB hub can be used to create additional USB ports on the ps3. I got a 1 into 4 hub from The Source for $15.
