This whole thread scares me.

I had my 60 gig get the red flashing light - now I'm paranoid with my Slim.

Someone mentioned a few pages back that a $600 machine (the original 60/80 gigs) shouldn't break so early.

I agree.

2-3 years is just too d@mn early. Hell, my PS2 has worked for over 10 years - my DVD players have worked over 10 years, my old computer has worked almost 10 years (gave it to my mother in law years ago), and my recent computer is going on 6 years.

I understand the PS3 is a complex machine - but these replies scare me, "Yeah, it's the YLOD - I'd get a Slim, good price right now" - as if you're expected to just keep buying these machines.

If this PS3 breaks down early, I'll very seriously consider just moving on (stand alone player, and no more games).

Just my two cents. Good luck to everyone trying to repair their systems.

Did you go up close? you have to listen carefully.

I called sony CS and they said its normal? that it can happen when on standby since the components are still on?

I agree, its so stupid. im tired of having to worry about how long my PS3 has been on, and having to turn it off to give a rest or something. my PS2 still works and i've had it since 2001, never had a problem with it. never had a problem with my PS3 either but its only been 2 years, hope i never have one.

Its really annoying having to wonder if its going to break, we shouldn't be doing that.

GET A FAN!!! GET A FAN!! GET A FAN!!

and equip it AS SOON as you get your next console. It may make noise (and it WILL) but it's a small price to pay for a YLOD (right now I'm still trying to get my accounts deactivated/saves backed up a week and a half after my phat YLOD'ed and that's why I haven't been online even though I have a new slim ready to go- WHAT A PAIN!!!)

But when I play it I'm going to do the three most important things I DIDN'T do that people said help them and mine lasted over two years: get the system in a COMPLETELY open area (my first apartment had one and that is why it may have lasted so long but now my space is very tight, get a fan (seriously, it is noisy but I've heard literally NO ONE with a fan attached directly to their system get a YLOD- not even one and if you have please show me. I've heard it keeps the system VERY cold as long as you pick the right one), and third don't power it down from the back and instead use the front ( a MAJOR power waster and could have lead to my PS3's death and now I don't have to worry about that with a slim ) .

So that, and now getting a 2 year warranty instead of a 1 year warranty the first time around, is why I don't think I have to worry about this gen ever again. Figure if each PS3 has at least two good years of life in them (which is the average I'm hearing). I have at least 4 more years with my warranty without paying any extra money and I REALLY don't think that Sony will go on with this machine for 4 more years when this has been out for 3-4 already (sure they talk of a "ten year plan"- but we know from the last two years of the PS2 that the last two years are very meh). So that is why , I think at least, I will be OK for the rest of this gen. It still sucks but now I can go in with more knowledge from past mistakes and try to make this one last to the very end with a back up warranty if I fail (again- hate that they make me say that, with the machine being so expensive but it is a possibility. I know not one but TWO people on GAF who had their Slim only two weeks before they went YLOD).

How do you deactivate accounts on a dead ps3? I need to know because my recently "fixed" ps3 YLODd again. After like a week, week and half maybe. Ugh. Thank goodness I backed up the HD, so except for my Ratchet game save where'd I'd completed the game/got the last couple items I needed, I didn't lose anything else this time. Man, this blow though. Just when I thought things would return to normal.

I think he mentioned earlier of a supposed 'Hairdryer technique'. Or, you could try to fix your PS3 again. You mentioned that it worked for at least a week and a half, which would be plenty of time to do another backup.

I have my PS3 in my entertainment stand with the door open and the fan hardly goes pass 2nd gear. only when the room is warm the fan goes on high speed, but i make sure to turn it off or open a window to let it cool down. especially now that its cold in new york its pretty easy to keep it cool.

I plan on buying one of those fans from coolerguys when i get my next tv stand.

Default Oh no! Is my PS3 dying???

Damn I'm scared!

Watched Hot Fuzz tonight until about the 1½ hour mark where it froze.. I had to turn the power off my PS3 as it wouldn't eject the disc.. Checked the disc (no scratches or anything - brand new!) and tried again! Watched 5 minutes then it froze! Did it again and watched 5 minutes before it froze..

I thought ``screw that - must be faulty disc´´ and started plying Killzone 2.. I had no problems and I played for 2 hours straight..

Then I unwraped King Kong and popped it in the player - watched 10 minutes then it froze

What is going on here? Why can it read blu-ray games and not movies? Is my PS3 dying?

I'm watching X-Files on DVD right now with no problems so far..

Has Universal maybe released faulty discs?

Its a 60GB btw

Check out the PS3 lazer replacement thread. Maybe it's that? I think the price is $80 or so... if that's the issue.

Sounds like your laser is going bad. Lots of the 60gb ps3's have had this problem. You should be able to replace it easily.

The Blu-ray diode is seperate that the one for DVDs. Also, not all games require constant use of the Blu-ray diode.

This sucks so bad! It is a good guide but I am not handy enough with electronics to even attempt that Whats even worse is that the warranty expired 2 weeks ago! My first PS2 died 1 week after the warranty expired and I had to buy a new one.. How unlucky can one be??

Yes it does suck, but its really not that bad if you are careful and purchase the right tools (that I mention in the guide).

Its been alive, lol.

I've noticed that if I play for over 9 hours the fan really starts cooking. So I usually just take a break just in case.

Why haven't you just attempted to purchase a cooling fan and try that way?
