Might still give Sony a call to see if you can get it fixed (refurbed one). If that fails, just open it up and see if you have the one or dual laser and order accordingly.

GOD....I HATE SONY!!! They shouldn't of charged this much for a faulty system. I have my new system. I want to get on and play but all these hoops I have to deal with first are driving me f'ing bonkers.
Can you actually see the game save files?

I would NOT trust Sony with refurb's this gen. If it's not brand new and fully working up to 100% performance I'm not putting my money down anymore. Wouldn't a refurb most likely get a YLOD vs. a brand new system? Getting a refurb means you lost all your saves anyway and one of your shares because SONY is dumb and doesn't let you manually deactivate. So once all that agony is over why not start fresh?

When I put it in my HDD and put it through my software- yes. and like I said I cant open the files of course or can't do any copy protected files but everything else I'm copying EXACTLY as it comes up on my PS3's HDD that was formatted to work in the PS3 system. I don't see how that wouldn't work after I formatted my new drive( the drive I'm getting the saves off if) to my new PS3.

Well, I got a bestbuy 2 year warranty (I only had a 1 year warranty last time, and the system lasted 2 years) so I can go in any time in those two years and walk into bestbuy and just pick up a new system if my system breaks- free of charge. I think that's awesome (and maybe if it hasn't died in 2 years again I'll purposely try to overheat it so I get another system that will last me two years, lol, I kid...maybe)

Default blinking red light on ps3

I tried to turn it on....it went to straight red light. Pressed power button again. Green then real quick yellow light and now back to blinking red. What does this mean? and what it the phone # to contact Sony? Are they 24 hours?

If you did get the YLOD, then there are ways to fix it yourself if you're willing to (it voids your warranty, but could cost you nothing, whereas it'll cost almost $200 from Sony). IIRC, it's usually caused by melted solder that loses connection, so you just need to re-solder it.

Did not know that. If it were me, I would find out what to do and solder the thing. His warranty is probably voided by now.

Default Bad Night: I Think My PS3 Just Died

Hey all,

I'm having a bad night. I was playing Assassin's Creed 2 for the PS3 tonight when the screen went black and my PS3 started flashing a red light over and over again.
I had to physically power of the unit in the back. When I turned it back on, everyhting seemed fine. But, when I selected the game disc to play again, the same thing happened again.
I've tried other games and blu-rays; it's doing the same thing on all of them. The system powers back on just fine and gets to the xmb, but a few seconds after I select the disc to play, it does the flashing red light.
Anybody ever hear of this before. It's a 80 GB PS3 (with 4 usb's and full backwards compatibility, so I don't want to get anew one, since i'll be losing that big feature).
Any ideas? Couldn't happen at a worse time-Christmas.

edit: well, it can't be the disc drive. I just tried using the internet browser, and everything was for about 15 seconds. Then, suddenly, the flashing red lights on the PS3. What the heck is going on?

Praise your lucky stars or to what ever deity you pray to at (if you do at all) and you can get to the XMB. DO NOT PUT IN A BLURAY OR A PS3 GAME!!! Back up your system RIGHT away and disconnect your profiles. Sorry to say, you're screwed. There is a fix but it's NOT permanent.

Actually with all these stories (on this and other forums I go to) do you think Sony planned this? All these YLOD's exactly around the same time just seems REALLY fishy to me. Maybe I have a very "War Games" mind set right now.

Do NOT put in a disc dude. If your machine is TELLING you it doesn't like something, don't FORCE it. It usually only makes your problem much worse. Like I said, at least you can go to the XMB. ALOT of people didn't even get that from Sony. ALOT of YLOD victims would LOVE to be in your shoes right now (me included). Do do what I said in my post above.

more bad news: followed ur advice. Tried to just back up my game saves, and the blinking red light interrupted the backup. Powered the system on and off, and now I can't even get on the xmb...the light just blinks when i even try and turn the system back on. This sux. Put in a call to sony, having to pay 149 bucks for the system repair. bye bye, game saves... arghh!

edit: any way to connect the ps3 hard drive to a computer so i canget those saves? This really sux.

If your PS3 is our of warranty, you could follow the instructions in the first post of this thread in regarding how to fix the YLOD.
