Ok, my refurb 60GB apparently has bit it. I was playing a game, and then the PS3 shuts down with no warning. The red light is still on, so I proceed to press the power button on the PS3 to turn it back on. The unit turns on, light turns green (no yellow light or anything else), I see the HDD light blink a couple of times but no audio or video. I press the Eject button on the unit to eject my disc, and it ejects the disc-no problem. I re-insert the disc, it takes it, blue light comes on and the HDD light blinks a bit. So it seems that the PS3 seems to still be working, although it won't sync up with a controller that I plug into the USB port.
Tried plugging the PS3 into a different HDTV, different power cable and HDMI cable this time (previous setup was on component cables) and still same issue. I'm at a loss, am past my 90-day backup warranty with Sony and want to know if anyone else has experienced something like this? ![]() |

You can either send it to Sony to fix for around $150 plus taxes, but you will lose everything saved on your hard drive.
Or read through the info in this thread https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-ga...cks-fixes.html https://forum.blu-ray.com/1786358-post203.html In particular the section and youtube videos on how to fix the yellow light of death. It involves taking apart your system, using a heat gun on the chips and replacing the thermal grease. It sounds complicated but it isn't that bad, hardest part for me was finding the Thermal Compound. I did this to my fat PS3 twice, the first time the PS3 turned back on but only worked for 10 minutes. The second time it hasn't stopped working yet, but I stopped using it as I got a slim, it did work long enough for me to take all my saved data off so I could put it on thee new slim. |

I have a launch day 60 GB PS3, and 3 out of 4 USB ports do not work. Everything else works perfectly. I must correct myself, because the first USB port on the left works with just one of the many USB cords I have. The third port from the left works with anything. Ports 2 and 4 don't work with anything.
Have any of you encountered anything like this before, either with a PS3 or a USB port in general? I think I'm having a contact issue, because there is a faint click sound, like a metal contact, that can be heard when something is inserted in the 3 faulty ports. I'd like to repair or replace the ports without sending the console to Sony. I did recently take the console apart to clean and redo the coolant past. When it was apart I examined the USB port board, but I couldn't see anything wrong with the board or connection. Any idea where I might find a spare USB port board for a 4 port PS3? Or, any info on repairing the existing unit would be great too. If the only working port ever stops working, I'm screwed. |

If it fails again you could just get the 120g but also keep your 80. Just use the 120g for primary and use the 80g when you really want to. I get my 60g back today but eventually gonna just get a 120g for main use.

My 60G died (red blinking light) about a week ago.
Yesterday I cracked the thing open to see what it looked like inside. There was some dust in there but I'd say it was surprisingly clean. Cleaned what dust there was and put it back together. Now there is nothing, no power at all, no light. Will Sony still repair this since the sticker is gone? Was looking on the PS site just now and couldn't find a price. I thought there was a set fee. It sounds like if they accept my unit and have me send it in and then after inspection decide not to work on it they would send it back to me and I'd be out no money at that point. Just trying to figure out what to do. If I can get back a working 60G with 90 day warranty to use as a second blu-ray player for ~ $150 I'd say that was worth it. |

I bought a 60GB at launch in Nov 06. It died almost exactly 3 years later but I had extended the warranty for 2 extra years for a total of 3.
So,... In my case I sent it in to the warranty company who sent it back to me and they called Sony and paid the $150 for an exchange. Because of this it took about a month total. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Anyways,... The "new" 60GB has been like "new" and I'm sure now it's out of whatever warranty it came with. If it broke today and Sony would still swap it for another 60GB for $150 then that's exactly what I would do. In my case I do have a PS2 game and a SACD that I use so just getting a newer one would take away some of the functions I currently use. Now... You opened yours and went for a look see so there is a chance Sony will say they have no interest in helping you with it. That part is a bit of a drag. Anyway,.... Good Luck, -Brian |

If it's worth the $150, then I'd say do it.
Sony will still fix it without the sticker on it. The only reason that is there is for when it's still under warranty. They won't fix things for free under the warranty if that seal is broken, because the presumption is that you opened it and broke something. But once the warranty is up, it doesn't really matter how it broke, because they're charging you to fix it. Of course, if the sticker is removed, and Sony opens it to find pieces missing, or severe damage (like you took a sledgehammer to the innards of the PS3) then of course they won't fix it. But if the PS3 looks normal, and simply isn't working, sticker or no sticker, they'll fix it. If you only want it as a Blu-ray player, there might be better options out there, since the PS3 you'll be getting returned is only temporarily fixed, at best. I still have my 60gb taken apart into a bunch of pieces, stored away in a spare room. I tried the re-flowing method to fix it myself, hoping I could at least temporarily get it fixed, so I could back up my hard drive. If it broke again after 1 day, at least I'd get all my save game files. The reflowing didn't work, and I figured the reason was that I used too much thermal compound. I decided to try it a second time, but the heat sink over the RSX chip ripped off, and I need to glue it back down. I can't find a local store that sells the paste, and I haven't bothered to order any online, because I've just been using my 2nd PS3 (previously used just as a BD player, so it had no game save files on it), and fixing the other isn't a huge priority for me right now. The longer I go without fixing it, the less I care about the save game files on it. Losing those saved files is the main thing that prevented me from sending it in to Sony, but I was also somewhat mad at Sony at the time (I bought it at launch, for $600, and only lightly used it over the past three years... I'm not a huge/hardcore gamer), and didn't feel like giving them even more of my money at the time. |

I decided to give the reflowing one last shot (I'd already tried it once before). After putting it all back together... it worked!
Hopefully it still works tomorrow, when I take it into GameStop, and trade it in toward a Slim. |

If it was working again, and I figured it'd remain working again for a few weeks/months (which is what I thought) I wouldn't have had a problem with trading it in. Sure, I know it would almost certainly break again, but any phat PS3 is probably going to break at some point, and GameStop has no problem accepting trades on those (they're currently having a "deal" going on, offering $200 for any PS3 trade-in, as long as it works).
Since GameStop sells refurbed 60gb models for $350, even if mine broke on them, I'm sure the amount of repair labor involved is less than the $150 between what they gave me for it (not to mention, $200 in store credit, not cash) and the $350 they'll eventually sell it for, so they're still making money in the end. If I was trying to trade in a reflowed 20gb or 80gb, I'd probably feel more guilty about it, because there's not much money to be made with re-selling those, even if they work properly. ~~~~ In any case, it was a false alarm. My PS3 is broken again, after being "fixed" for a good 12 hours (but only turned on for about 20 minutes in total, between the 3 times I had it on). When it first YLOD'ed, I had a copy of MLB '10: The Show inside. I tried reflowing it, and it didn't work, so I opened up the BD drive to get my game out. Now that the second reflow worked, the console thought there was a game still inside, so I couldn't insert a disc. I didn't know that you could try to hold down Eject for 5-10 seconds to try to reset the mechanism inside, so I took the entire thing apart again, and put a blank CD-R inside (instead of something of any value), then put it all back together. Now that there was a disc inside, I figured I'd hit eject, it'd pop out, and everything would be fine. So I hit eject, heard a beep, sounded like it was getting ready to eject the disc... and then the PS3 shut off. Turning it back on results in the YLOD problems again. Since it's a 60gb, it may be of some value to someone out there, even broken. There were two listings within the last 2 days on Craigslist in my area, looking for broken PS3s. I sent emails to both, to see what kind of money I could get for it, and then would put that toward a slim. Even if nothing else happens, I'm still slightly better off today than I was yesterday, because I copied some of my game files over. ![]() Last edited by toef; 07-01-2010 at 05:36 PM. |

Got it working again... but the disc drive is still broken.
I tried holding down eject for 5, 10, 15, 20 seconds. Nothing was happening. I'm wondering if I should try the method of putting a disc back into the drive manually (by opening up the BD drive) and then trying to set the plastic spring-loaded arms into whatever position they need to be in. Kind of annoying that it seems like to get the plastic arms back in the empty position, a disc has to push through them or something, because holding reset isn't fixing the problem. |

Update: Got the BD drive working again. Discs insert/eject properly, and games load fine.
We'll see how long this update works. If anyone has any questions about reflowing, or fixing a BD drive that isn't loading discs properly, feel free to PM me. |

Just got done re-flowing my PS3 for the third time. I think I finally found out what's causing it to shut down so often. After I got done putting my PS3 back together, I was about to set it back on its shelf when I felt the temperature of the glass. It was warm becuase of my receiver directly below. Great... now I'm going to have to move my receiver to the top shelf, which means moving all my cables and re-doing everything. Hopefully, after doing the switch, I shouldn't have to re-flow my PS3 for at least a few more months. My wife asked me why I don't just get a new one. Then I asked her if I could spend $800 dollars to buy the equipment to replace my 60GB. That means buying a new Slim and an Oppo BDP-83. Of course she tells me no, which I'm fine with.

Is anyone familiar with the firmware update/corruption problem from April, when a number of people across the internet complained that the update caused their PS3 to stop reading all discs?
The disc drive worked fine prior to the update, and the console otherwise works fine (PSN games, demos, etc). Anyone know of a solution? Entering recovery mode and doing the file system option, and the rebuilding the database option, and reinstalling the firmware don't seem to be fixing it. The last potential option is to reset the entire PS3 (I think option 5 or something on the list), but before wiping the entire system, I figured I'd see if anyone knew of a simpler solution. |

Anyone heard of issues with Avatar not playing on their PS3? My PS3 recognizes Avatar and allows me to play it, but its just a black screen and it makes a weird disc reading noise.
All Blu-ray/DVD discs game/movies other than that play normally w/o issue. I have the latest firmware. |
