not sure how to word this, but recently traded my 80Fat for a new slim...

at times ive heard it suddenly 'crack' or the disc seems to be working a tad harder. not like the fat kinda harder, where you can hear it whirl a bit, but more or less like its 'reading' it.

anyways, its the 'crack' im a bit concerned about. is that due to temperature changes? its no biggy correct?

'crack' sounds like someone breaking a cd or something more snappy so to speak.

You're describing two separate issues right?
The crack sound is from the plastic case warming/expanding. If that's what you're referring to, mine does it too.
As for the disc spinning faster, I haven't really noticed anything. It sounds a bit different, but that's about it.

- yes, this is correct. i was assuming that it is normal and it happens. thank you.

yeah, sometimes it sounds like its er... not necessarily 'scratching' it, but it 'halts' at times, like a pc does from time to time.

Last weekend, after 6 weeks without the use of my playstation, I finally plucked up the courage to fix it's YLOD with the heatgun reflow method and to my suprise, it worked! Does anybody out there know if this is a permanant fix or am I inevitably going to need to purchase a new one in a week/months time?

Usually not permanent. I suggest you do a full backup first thing. Then hope for the best! Mine lasted about 2-3 months the first time I did it. Each time I did it after that it lasted progressively less.

Yeah, I did that straight away! I was ok with having to buy a new one but was so gutted at the thought of losing all my game saves and stuff. It won't be getting the 6 hours at a time punishment it used to as my wife gave birth to our baby son only 6 weeks ago so all my spare time is spent with my little man

Finally got back my 40GB PS3 after sending it away to get the YLOD light fix for the second time, I have decided to get a new slim, not going to take the chance again of the same problem happening...now what would be the best way to transfer my files form the old PS3 to the new one when I get it...

If you don't want to keep the data on your 40GB PS3 after doing the transfer, there is a way to do a direct data transfer from your 40GB PS3 to your new system. It will erase everything on your 40GB system though. I don't really know how to do it but I'm sure there are instructions around here somewhere.

If you want to keep both going, you could do a backup of the 40GB system and restore it onto your new slim. Any copy protected saves or data (music/videos) won't get restored though.

This is not true. If you use the Transfer Utility, you can move all of your data from one PS3 to another. I've used this utility and the whole process is very easy. The only odd thing was that the data was not erased from the original system.

EDIT: My answer is in reply to an earlier post but I was just going off of what was stated. If the person did not get back the original 40GB PS3 with all of the data, then yes, you are correct.

Angry PS3 Won't Turn On

So I have never had any problems with my PS3, and earlier while I was gaming, the system just shut itself off. I had been playing maybe an hour and it made the power down noise and the light went red. I've never heard of this happening with a PS3 before. The part that really pisses me off, is that I can't even eject my game. Nothing happens, I completely powered down, left it unplugged for a few hours but still no changes. I press the power button and it beeps as if restarting, however, it does not boot up. Instead, the green light immediately goes yellow, then red, followed by the same unexpected beeping. Does anybody know what the hell I can do? So much for my New Vegas game, that I had 22 hours into, I get the feeling my system is dead, or at the very least I must replace the hard drive and still I'll lose my game.....

So I'm sorry to tell you but it has died(obviously)and you need either to send it in or fix it yourself.

sounds like mine. Just got the red light blinking after playing a game, in mid game actually. It's either overheating issue or hard drive issue. Mine was fixed the first time and it lasted 7 more months. It has since died.

The only thing I could do was I waited a few hours, completely unplugged it and then it would stay on for about 5 minutes, which gave me enough time to save my game saves. If they are copy protected though, you are out of luck

sorry bud.

YLOD means your PS3 is gone, time to send for a refurb or get a slim.

Hook up and external HDD that's larger than your internal HDD. Then under the system settings you'll see something that says backup hard drive. Then when you get the new PS3 you just go to the same place and restore.

Oh really? I'll try that, I use my external hard drive to watch tv shows and movies on it all the time, didn't know i could back it up like that. That is well if it does ever actually turn back on again lol. I found a video walk through that takes about an hour to completely tear everything a part and apply a heat sink compound to the circuit board and apparently it fixes it. The guy claims he fixes them all the time, so I am going to try this in the morning. I'd much rather fix it and be able to use it for a few more months than have to buy another right now. Just do not have the spare cash available for this right now.

Look at my other post again I edited it and added the official sony walkthrough for backing up and restoring.

And if you have YLOD it will NEVER turn back on with out doing the reflow. My 60GB died, I did the reflow, and it works now. It's more nerve-racking than it is hard... I did it pretty quickly and i'm not super-computer-building literate.
