Any suggestions?
My son has been complaining for a couple weeks about game freezes, and it finally got to the point where as soon as the games start to load, they immediately freeze. I did a complete hard reset along with a HD reformat last night in hopes that would help. When Modern Warfare was inserted, it recognized the disc and began the game update. After the update was complete, the game froze again (it does this on all games). After shutting down the PS3, I started it back up and ejected the disc. Now, it won't even recognize any discs (games or movies). Assume my BD drive is toast? If so, what's the best option to have it fixed? The unit is 2.5 years old, so there is no warranty on it. So much for the "low" failure rates on the PS3. ![]() Edit: I see my new thread was merged with this one, which is where it should be now that I read through some of the posts. Not sure I'm seeing exactly what my problem is, so any suggestions would be helpful. Edit 2: Have done numerous restores/resets/etc. without any luck. The drive works sporadically and give error 80010514 (games) and 80029941 (BDs). Reading the net tells me it's either a corrupted HD, corrupted firmware or near-dead BD drive and/or laser. Decision time. Do I spend $52 on a laser assembly from eBay and replace it myself (not knowing if this will fix the problem), or do I spend ~$120 and send it to ROSL PC in Florida and have it fixed with a 1-year warranty. Anyone have any experience with these folks? Last edited by My_Two_Cents; 05-30-2010 at 12:27 AM. |

I found a great series of videos on YouTube detailing the process, so I'll follow those. The guy on the 7 part video series says it takes a person experienced with the process about 30 minutes. I'm guessing that means somewhere around 1/2 a day for me? |

First time? I'd give it maybe two-three hours for the first time. It's pretty easy, just unscrew, unclip, etc. Take it nice and slow and don't force anything. You'll get much quicker... first time I missed one of the clips (BT/wifi antenanna board) and got it apart and back together really quick again.

Alrighty, I cleaned and re-pasted my PS3 this morning. It took me about 3 1/2 hours from start to finish. I cleaned dust out of every little crevice, and re-pasted the chips and heat sink assembly. The original thermal paste was dry and scarce - it was a bit of an eye opener.
Now, the PS3 runs like it did when we first pulled it out of the box. The difference is incredible. Thermal paste is $9.99 at Best Buy, and doing this greatly reduced my chances at getting the YLOD. I highly recommend all owners of the original PS3 to do this. |

Ever since I hooked my PS3 to my HDTV, it always caused screen flickering, which would sometimes cause the sound to completely turn off. But when I turn 1080p off my selection of resolutions, the problem goes away somewhat. When playing games, this problem is almost non-existent (except for MGS4). When watching movies however, the problem continues. No problems with the Dark Knight or Iron Man, and such, but it flickered with Avatar at times. I doubt it could be the cable, since it works fine with games and such, but other than that, its a huge pain in the a**.
Can anyone help? I tried everywhere and no one gave me a solution. |

Most games on the PS3 run at 720p, which is why you don't notice it on them. |

yeah, i had issues with power surge and quickly got the uninteruptable power supply brick to make sure it never happens again and allows me to properly turn off my equipment
Very awesome tutorial Marine Mike and thanks for doing this to help people like me that wouldn't want to open and fool around with the internals. Got a question for you or anyone who may know. I had this happen to my 60 GB ps3 and ordered the KEM-400AAA, the laser with the mechanic and spinner. The actual laser is not up to the bumper as shown on the pic on the link you added for lasers, but is on the opposite side. Do you think it is ok to replace the whole mechanism or just to replace the laser part to make sure there are no problems at boot up with the laser on the opposite side? I recommend you all look into getting a whole house surge suppression system. I did after a meth head slammed a stolen truck into a power pole about 1/2 mile from my neighborhood. The crash sent a series of 3 or 4 big surges through the neighborhood, and it fried a lot of my neighbors' gear. Fortunately, all my HT stuff was on surge protectors, so I ended up better than most. I lost my new dryer, which was painful, as well as an older DVD player which was on a surpressor that was torched. I had neighbors who lost refrigerators and full HT room gear. One neighbor lost around $20k in gear.
Anyway, after all of this happened, I found out that my power company offers whole house surge suppression installed at the meter, before the house. It has an audible alert if ever tripped and a lifetime warranty for only $229. Everything is still on surge protectors, but now I have the whole house system acting as the first line of defense. Any of you with homes, I suggest you look into it as well. |

So I'm done watching Extract and I go to eject it from my PS3. It doesn't come out, it just makes some kind of whirring/clutching noise. Then I do a hard reset and it still doesn't come out. After 2-3 times doing this, it finally comes out. Hoping it's not busted, really don't want to send it in.

It's a blu-ray called Extract, ugh I can pay for the repair if I have to but it will really set me back as far as getting another computer. Not to mention I don't get paid till Wednesday so I would be without my PS3 for quite awhile.

I just edited the config file in PS3 media server to allow 5000 streaming radio channels. Amongst other things.
Namely - A few webcam feeds, a few podcasts, some G4 feeds.. It works pretty well, been listening to worldwide radio stations all day. Although some don't work. To do it, follow these instructions - This only works with PS3 media server. So you must have that installed on your PC.You can get the file here - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Z0HV5E4X Go to program files > ps3mediaserver (put it here) replace existing file which is quite small with my 6meg file. Restart PS3Mediaserver. XMB > Music > World-Radio From there its self explanatory.. Bear in mind there are 1000's of entries, so it might take a while to display them. You can actually edit the file as you please if you see something new thats not on the list. If you have security issues writing to that directory (happened to me) just go to properties and allow your ID on your PC to have read write access. Enjoy.. I have Vista, I'm not sure how linux and OSX versions differ. |

So is it worth it to do the reflow even if you haven't ylod'd yet? I always assumed by doing it you just heighten the risk of getting one.
