I wouldn't assume "looks fine" = fine. If you can, borrow/rent a copy and see if a different disc works.

Or if you can, try the disc in someone else's player.

I speak from experience that "used to work" does not mean it still does. I've had a 300 disc, a Ratchet and Clank Future, and a Harry Potter/Order of the Phoenix disc die on me...one time they worked, the next time they didn't.

disconnect your ps3 from the internet. Lots of people have had problems loading Zack and Miri because of the BD live.

+1 to this. Especially if it's a new disc (never used before). There could be some sort of defect from manufacturing which may or may not be visible.

Just done another reflow on my PS3 but now there's no power light on. I'm suspecting it could be the small ribbon cable going to the Power/Eject board as this got trapped when I put back together
I don't think it's the PSU but you never know. I can get hold of a multimeter and I'm a bit of a noob when comes to testing with a multimeter.
Anyone know how I do it?

Make sure to check all your cables, did you hook them all up correctly (power supply especially? If you turn the power switch on in the back the standby light should be coming on, or you should be able to turn on the PS3 using a controller (if the front switches are indeed broken).

Thanks I never thought of using the controller to see if it will come on.

I've double checked all the cables. I've reflowed it 7 times now so I'm quite confident it is all connected as it should. I did see on the internet that someone had a similar fault with no power light and it turned out to be the ribbon cable going to the Power/Eject board.

Wouldn't turn on with the controller so I tried another reflow, doubled and tripled checked the connections and PSU, but still dead

Killzone 2 was stuck in the drive so I had to take apart the drive to get the disc out.

R.I.P. Fat PS3

Still got my 2 month old Slim though

7 reflows. Wow. THAT is why I haven't bothered with #2 on my own fat PS3. And to think I used to mock the 360's unreliability.

After it breaks the first time it will always break again with this "homemade" reflow process. The time between breaks for mine was reduced after every reflow until I eventually just bought a new one. Probably did the reflow 5-8 times which netted me another 5 months or so. It's more of a band-aid solution than an actual "repair" for most people.

I found the fan got louder and louder with each reflow.

Most definitely. Just reminds me of the 'towel trick' shenanigans that was so thoroughly mocked (especially around these parts). I probably need to do it once more to get my NBA2k10 disc out and then chop the sucker up into little parts.

<3 the original "It Only Does Everything" design, but wish it wasn't flawed.

Same here. If people ask me if it's worth it to do I usually tell them it's mostly useful for buying time to do a full backup before buying a new system. Definitely don't expect it to make the PS3 new again. Some people have been lucky with how long theirs lasted after doing the reflow, but for the most part it's just delaying the inevitable.

I actually found it pretty fun to muck around with my broken PS3, see how all the guts were setup etc.

My Slim is acting crazy. Even if I have disabled the "auto turn-off" feature, it does turn off by itself after an hour. It must be pretty annoying for my PSN friends to constantly see "StereoMike is online", "StereoMike is offline"...

Interesting. Never used that option (and definitely disinclined to now), but sounds more like a firmware bug.

Yeah me too, I was ready to give up on it when I got the first YLOD but after reading and watching Gilsky's Ylod Fix, I thought I might as well give it a try seeing as the warranty had expired. Glad I did as I got another 8 months (7 reflows) out of it. I knew it wouldn't be permanent but it still gave me the option to copy everything across to my new Slim.

Yep , I was this close to removing you: |--|

J/K I've never noticed...and I don't think I have that same problem. Does it happen anytime or just when sitting in the XMB for an hour?

I figured out what was wrong. I had the "HDMI Control" set to on, so the Slim turns off after an hour (or 2, I don't know) if it is not displayed on your TV.

I tried the emergency eject feature to get MGS4 out of my dead PS3...but it just didn't work. Can anyone help me out with this?

What emergency eject feature?

AFAIK, if you went YLOD, gotta take it apart to get the disc out (either success at reflow or complete disassembly of the BD drive) or send it to Sony to fix, who will send you your disc back.
