It sounds like YLOD to me. It's really not that much work. It takes a bit of time, but it's not hard at all. I'm not a computer builder nor do I work with electronics and I did it with no issue.

It's kinda confusing. YLOD is when the PS3 is turned on it quickly turns off and the light flashes yellow for a 1/2 second then blinks red afterwards...it should have been called Blinking Red Light of Death or something.

Thanks for explanation. Makes sense. I ended getting a 120GB slim last night.

I recommend deleting anything that has already been downloaded for the Wipeout Demo and trying again today.

i was updating my software/ps3 and everything was going smooth... until it said, you wont be able to use "another os". ok fine, no problem. the system just locked up. it said press ps button to use remote, (i have the blue tooth). it did nothing. no response. frozen. eventually i unplugged it for a while. as soon as i plug it back in, and turn it on... its says checking for update then returns to the screen it was on when unplugged. can anyone help?

If it freezes during updates most time restarting and trying to install again will help.

If you keep freezing you can go to the thread on here that deals with firmware updates and get the link... Then update it with a USB drive.

humm... If it's frozen and nothing will work you can hold the power button and try to restart it.

If that doesn't work you can flip the back switch (if it's a fat model)... That's really not recommended, but sometimes you just have to. I REALLY hate doing it.

Then try again.

If it's not frozen, then IDK what to say. I've never just not had something install. I always either get the install to work, or it crashes and I have to start over.

Default Do the newer PS3's experience Yellow Light of Death

A few years back I purchased a PS3 which stopped working and displayed the Yellow Light. I didn't want to pay $190 for Sony to replace or repair it thinking that I might have the same problem after the warranty expired again and hearing that this problem is fairly early common with the earlier ps3s (i had a 40 giger). So I sold it as is.

Has anyone heard whether the newer smaller slim ps3 experiences the same problem? Is it rarer now?

Ok, I am not entirely sure if this is the right place to post this question, anyway, here we go.

I am just now started playing GTA IV: The Lost Episodes on my new slim PS3 and have unlocked two trophies so far. Then I saved my progress along with the game profile file on a USB drive, and transferred everything to my 60Gb launch model. Everything plays fine and all, but for some strange reasons I cannot seem to sync my trophy collection on the 60Gb model. I mean, those two new trophies I unlocked cannot be shown in my 60Gb model, what gives? Please note, both consoles have the latest 3.41 firmware and all. Thanks in advance for any help.

early 60gb models mainly had this problem, something to with poor soldering somewhere inside the machine i heard. it does still happen from time to time, but its a lot less common.
PS3s have a much lower fault rate than Xbox 360, but Wii is overall the most reliable.

Do note that overall build quality is lower on the slims, and the last couple of phat models prior to the slim are the most reliable of all PS3s

Bought the fat PS3 the first day it came out. Never had a ylrod, but about 3 weeks ago it had trouble reading blu-ray discs. I just replace the laser a couple days ago and everything is running perfectly fine.

Really has nothing to do with "poor soldering". The 60gbs have the original 90nm cell, which produces ridiculous heat and power consumption. the heat causes the unit to overheat in turn causing the GPU and/or CPU to seperate from the motherboard. not sure what you mean about "overall build quality" either.... The slim uses a far smaller 45nm cell which produces much much much less heat. also power consumption is far less as well, being almost cut in half. With the smaller cell and GPU components i would say the slim would be the last model to contract YLoD....
