Surprised the hairdryer worked, but as someone else said, back up everything while you can.

Good luck!

My PS3 officially won't turn on anymore. No red power light indicator... nothing.

I've had to open her up so many times (due to the YLoD) that the ribbon cable, which controls the eject and power button, has become damaged. It's a 10-pin cable and 2 of the pins are damaged. I wiggled the cable around a little bit, while my PS3 was plugged into power, and it did turn on and eject my disc on its own (that's the good news). It has to be in just the right position, though. Once I re-attach the ribbon that goes to the memory card reader and close the lid, it no longer powers on. So I did a little searching and found a replacement cable on eBay. It shouldn't take long to get here. From what I've witnessed so far by playing around with it and watching a video on YouTube, it should be a definite fix. Now, the hard part is waiting for the cable to get here.

If this works out, maybe we can add the fix to the first post as a known issue.

While I've never done this before. I believe you use an Ethernet cable between two PS3's and you can transfer the data. I think you said you don't have another PS3 though. You can also buy an external hard drive and copy your saves onto there.

If you have a removable USB flash drive, you only need to hook it up to the PS3 via its USB output. Then choose Games in the main menu, and scroll to the PS3 Saves Data (or whatever it is called) folder. Go into that folder and find the game save(s) you want to transfer and press the triangle button on the controller, and choose Copy. The PS3 will ask where you might want to copy it to, and you just select the flash drive (external drive) and press X. It will start the transfer / copy of that particular game save, and that's all.

I use this method to archive my saves at least once a week.

Yay! I got my PS3 back. Received the new ribbon in the mail today, swapped it out with the old one, flipped the power switch in the back, and the red power light came back on. It's been an awful three days.

I'll post pics later of my damaged ribbon. The blue film was falling off so I thought I'd be creative and use my heat gun to "glue" it back together. All that did was shrink the ribbon and completely destroy the pins. It's funny if you look at it.

Here's a video of the same fix (warning: the video itself is poorly made and very annoying, from its horrible music to the horrible camera control): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsAQojXFg1I

This is the first time im seeing this so i don't know how long it's been happening, if at all. This is the only game im seeing this happen. Don't remember any others. I'll check and report back.

The fans do get loud when playing that game. But when the room is cool it stays on 2nd gear.

I just checked fallout NV and i don't see any of the stuff i see in red dead. Is my GPU really malfunctioning, or just overheating?

You think i should just pack my OG60gb up and get a slim tomorrow?

GPU is overheating, had the same issue, got so bad I tried to fix it, and it didn't work, sent it in for repair and got a slim.

So if i keep it cool i don't have to worry about YLOD?

I don't see it on any other games. The fan has slowed down though.

it will get progressively worse. I saw it really bad in Call of Juarez, then it started in Infamous, and kept progressing from there. I don't know how long it will last.

Hmmm.

If i see it in another game i'll just pick up a slim then. Don't know why i should wait though. I've been using my PS3 since 2007 so it's bound to happen i guess.

Afraid to play red dead now :/

Got a YLOD then red flashing tonight on my 4 year old 60GB

Had no backups whatsoever. Went to Fry's and got some thermal paste and a heat gun and did a reflow on it following a few of the youtube videos. No dice... took it apart again... another reflow and this time cooked the @#$% out of it. Put it back together and it turned on

Got my gamesaves and am currently attempting to backup it up to an external HDD.

The thought of redoing Red Dead Redemption Multiplayer and GT5 just made me sick to my stomach Please take this as a lesson to backup!

I sold my brother in law a 60GB phat I had, with very little use. Before I shipped I checked it, updated the frimware with the latest one, packaged it and shipped it to him
It was a fairly short trip (he received it the next day) and he says the box I packaged it into did not look distressed.

But now the PS3 won't start. he says all he gets is a blinking red light, then a noise as if the PS3 was about to start and then nothing.
What do you guys think it could be?

Do you think some rough movements on the box could've done some damage?

Thanks

I got the YLoD last night on my launch 60GB. I have a slim also so no hurry to fix it, but I do have a large PS2 collection I wont abandon. Figures I get the YLoD after I retire it to my bedroom and only use it for standard DVD's for 30min a night.

I played GT 5 for several hours, and the system never got warm. As soon as the PS3 turns on the fan turns on to what I'm guessing to be the medium-ish speed or so. By doing so, it doesn't allow the GPU to build up the heat it used to before the fan would engage.

The trade off is a bit more fan noise from the start. It wasn't really noticeable watching a blu-ray at normal viewing levels. However, it will be audible during quiet passages or with fairly low volume levels, depending on where your PS3 sits. I think it's a good trade off though to keep the PS3 from overheating and YLOD again.
Update: My PS3 is still running awesomely well. Due to the fan mod that was installed (which you can purchase and install yourself http://www.sudburymods.com ), my PS3 never gets a chance to heat up.

I would suggest that anyone with a fat PS3, at least check into purchasing and installing the fan mod. If you have YLOD PS3, and whether you repair it yourself or have it done, you should have the fan mod installed. It will prevent your system from overheating again.

Mine runs perfectly since the repair too, and it doesn't heat up at all. Having said that, I bet the repair shop did something to the fan to cause it to run all the time now. Which is good since the console never generate "enough" heat now, but the nonstop fan noise can be quite annoying.
