For PS/2 BC might be cheaper to pick up a used PS/2 from gamestop for $50. Sure its not as pretty as a one box does all but why put extra wear and tear on a $300 PS/3 when a $50PS/2+cost of cable will yield same results .

First of all, thanks guys, and here is what I think.

Seriously, I can just "retire" the 60Gb fatty without a problem, yet I am just curious to know what is NOT working inside it, when the fan has been running the whole time... just guessing, maybe some sort of sensor was not properly restored causing the console to "think" it is over heating? Any idea?

Of course if you are interested in keeping PS2 BC, then I guess you will want to repair it.
I might just buy a new one too, but I am in no hurry to do so as the fatty is really my "back up" until sits in the bedroom. Then again, I kind of hate the idea of having multiple consoles for different games... it is just me...

True, and I am also thinking perhaps I should "un-retire" my trusty old PS2 as well. It had been working perfectly for 5 years until I "retired" it in 2007, when the fatty arrived. I am pretty certain it still runs... or I hope it does.

Good for you, and I wish I am half as good a handyman like you do. I am just NOT good at fixing things... that is why repair shops in town love me!!

My friend did this and his is working again....I just wish I had seen these videos before exchanging my 60g
For those that have used this method, how long does the fix last? What have your experiences been with it?

Im thinking its best to just transfer my data to a new ps3 when this one is up and running and thats it, for some reason im not expecting this to be a permanent fix ...

It really varies but if you can afford it, just buy a new PS3...it's honestly not worth the trouble and effort.

My fat PS3 lasted another 2-3 months with the fix and then crapped out again.

I tried it on my old 60gb and it never worked. I tried everything too! I would just buy a new one I mean you could try fixing it and then selling it to gamestop first, but like I said it didn't work for me.

I kind of wanna back up my save data and the trophies i earned since the PS3 went down, I earned quite a bit of challenging ones.

I suppose its not the end of the world but i want to keep that stuff :P

I fixed mine using this method and it lasted about 6 weeks. Long enough for me to back up all my game saves. Ultimately, I had to buy a new one.

I decided not to do mine after I read it wasn't a long-term fix but a friend of mine did his and it lasted about a month although with very little use during that time (since he bought a new one to be his main system while deciding what to do with the broken one). He was able to get what he needed off of it though and was able to sync his trophies. Edit: He had one of the 40-gig ones I think it was. Whatever that first model was that dropped a lot of stuff that the original 60-gig model had.

Forgive my ignorance on the topic but in the case of YLOD couldnt you just take the harddrive out and swap it into a newer PS3 that way you wouldn't have to worry about reviving your dead PS3 to transer your information to the new one?

I lasted about a month and died not long after a marthon Blu-ray (Rome series) and gaming (NBA2k10) marathon. I should have taken it a bit easier. Went from to again. It's basically good enough to get a good backup off but I haven't heard of anyone lasting longer than 3-4 months

Putting a drive into a PS3 means automatic reformat. Unfortunately!

Aahhhh I see. Yeah I didn't think I was onto anything groundbreaking with my advice...lol. It was more of a curiousity since I've never had to worry about YLOD (knock on wood).

It SHOULD be that easy. But unfortunately it's not. This could have been the major benefit of sending it back to Sony. Even if the HDD swap wasn't plausible (warranty concerns, etc), they should be able to decrypt the old HDD and put the contents onto the new HDD.

The traditional YLOD repair will only lead to repeat failure due to overheating, unless the cooling fan is modified too. In January I had my fan modified along with the YLOD repair, and now my PS3 doesn't even get warm. It has been trouble free since then.

Here's a link to my experience with the repair shop http://www.sudburymods.com :

https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-ga...ml#post4256684

I have no affiliation with the shop which is in Canada. I did a lot of research and picked the shop due to the fan modification and lifetime guarantee for the repair. I would suggest anyone looking for a YLOD repair give them a try. The trade off is having the fan on constantly at around medium speed, but that is the tradeoff for a trouble-free console.

Default PS3 Slim: high pitched noise

Having looked across the web I've found that this is unfortunately a fairly common issue.

When my PS3 Slim hits a certain temperature the fan spins at just the right speed to make a continuous high pitched noise which is painfully present whenever your music, game, film hits a quiet spot.

It's genuinely irritating but as yet I've not found anyone with a solution; apparently Sony don't recognise it as a fault (even though the other PS3 in my house doesn't make this noise)

Has anyone else suffered this and what did you do? (if anything)

Never even heard of it, if my PS3 was doing it, would I notice for sure?
