Default PS3 Problems

On Monday I was watching the Breaking Bad Blu-ray on my PS3 and after a couple minutes the disc froze. I was able to turn the power off but when I tried to watch other movies on Blu-ray I'd have the same problem. I then tried to play a PS3 game and it wouldn't play either. I put a DVD in and it played fine. I assume the PS3's Blu-ray drive is toast and I'll have to get a new player but I thought I'd check with the forum first and see if there's anything I can do to fix it. The PS3 is a 40 gig that I got in October 2007.

I thought component was the default cable (Composite)?

I've tried connecting it with the lead that came with the PS3, the lead that came with my PS3 and a HDMI to HDMI, HDMI to DVDI-D, but no joy.

You reckon to a hard drive wipe using the original cable? I think I was using that the last time, but it bummed out on me once it rebooted.

Anyone know if there is a way to get around the apparent theme limit on the PS3? Any idea if there are other limits, like on the number of PSN games, avatars, etc.?

Anyway, I bought several more themes last night and got a message saying I had reached the limit. So, I had to delete existing themes to be able to install the ones I just purchased. That's seems like a bad business to me. Obviously I buy a lot of themes and they're basically saying, don't buy any more. I guess on the positive side, I won't waste any more money on them but from their standpoint, that's seems like bad business.

So, just wondering if that's an account limitation or PS3 as a whole limitation. If it's just an account limitation, I can use one of my other accounts to get around the issue.

I'm sure if you hold the power button for about 10 secs you will here a beep and that resets all settings to default including video. Connect the RGB Lead and you should be ok. If you've got HDMI connected it should auto detect you have a HDMI connection.

Tried that but the screen just stays black. But when I wipe the hard drive it'll come up saying it needs formatting and the screen will work, then when it reboots, it's black again.

Default PS3 controller quit working, help..

I have a friend that just bought the Call of Duty bundle PS3, and his wireless controller only works when connected to the PS3 by the USB cable. He says it has a full charge, but does nothing wirelessly, is there a fix to this or just a garbage remote?

Question Overheating PS3/Increased Fan Speed

Hi,

A month ago there were reports, specifically that users who had older 60GB models of the PS3 and LA Noire were experiencing overheating issues along with constant high fan speeds. The link below shows Sony and Rockstars statement as of May 19th, but nothing since then. They said they were still investigating but don't seem to have followed up. I have a 60GB PS3, and I purchased LA Noire right around update 3.61. Prior to this, I had been playing AA, Burnout, etc and my fan would not kick in high until at least a few hours into playing. Since update 3.61 and/or LA Noire, my fan speed is at full blast almost as soon as I turn on my PS3.

Has anyone heard any other solutions or responses? Sony says to call them, but then only will look at it if you pay $200. I can understand if this was a one off, but when a significant number of people all start reporting the exact same issue right after an update/game is released, it's only common sense that the problem arose from this.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/...ge-8/#comments

With a recent failure of new dualshock controller which I had to pay to have resolved, the network/data compromise issue, and now this, Sony has definitely lost some credibility after 2 solid generations of Playstations.

Thanks

This actually happened to one of my controllers as well. Works perfectly fine wired, but dead as soon as it's unplugged.

Would like to know if anyone experienced the same and if there's a fix.

There my be a sync issue with the controller.

Try resetting the controller via the little button on the bottom....will need to press it with a pin.

If you still experience the same problem, try re-assigning it to a different number.

I brought the PS3 home, connected it up and the screen just came up like a Matrix screen, but it was black and white. There's a few video's on YouTube about it.

I did a little research and decided to take out the hard drive and format it into FAT32 (Not using quick format), as the PS3 turned on but there was just a black screen (Using HDMI and Composite on two different TV's).

When I formatted the hard drive and put it back into the PS3 and turned it on, the screen appeared and said that the HDD needs to be formatted and I was over the moon, as I assumed that'd be it fixed. It went through, then said it needed to reboot the PS3.

When it did that, black screen again, so I'm stuck on things to try/do now. Any ideas?
i had a similar problem when i transfered my data from an old ps3 to a new one a while back...try this, it may or may not work....unplug everything from your ps3...and by everything i mean take the power cord out of the wall and then out of the back of your ps3, then unplug anything in the usb ports or media card slots...also unplug the part that hooks into the tv from the back of the playstation and the tv...after you do that do the same thing to your tv...unplug the tv and disconnect any devices connecting to it...you can leave your cable box or any dvd/blu-ray players you have plugged into the wall but disconnect them from the tv....leave it like this for "awhile"...there is no set time, but if i remember right when i did this i went and took a shower and was getting ready for bed so 30 minutes or so should be enough, but if you let it go an hour you will definitely be ok...after that time replug everything back in and start the ps3, if your problem was the same as mine that should work, if not then im sorry...but atleast you eliminated one of the potential fixes...

I have reflowed my laptop before, but I didn't want to risk overcooking my PS3's GPU. That is why I had Sudburymods do it. They were really nice and professional to work with.

I can now play my PS3 for hours at a stretch, and it never gets warm. The tradeoff is having the fan run at a constant speed from the start, so it is louder than a stock PS3 before it warms up. The fan now constantly runs at what is probably the 3rd fan speed, but it's worth it.
Thanks for the information I just received the YLOD on my 20GB November 2006 launch unit this afternoon and decided to check these forums for a possible solution to the problems. It happened while uploading a 45 minute YouTube video. A couple of my friends have had the YLOD and they've opened them up, dusted them completely, used the heat gun on them and fixed them temporarilly for a couple months or so.

I called a guy from the website you mention and it seems like that might be the better way for me to go to revive my PS3. If I were wanting to ditch the machine on Gamestop I'd just drop it by as is and take a little credit towards something. Sad thing is that I like my 20GB more than the other machines. Oh well, I'll get around to sending it in when I get some time to get the proper reflow and fan modification.

I'll just need to figure out if I want to just do a job switcheroo between these other 2 PS3's I have or just continue as is.

Default PlayStation 3 repairs / YLOD issue

The other week while playing on LA Noire, I got the infamous 'Yellow Light of Death'. If this was the first time, I'd shrug it off and willingly pay Sony for their repairs or even fork out for a brand new one. However, this is my second PS3 (the first died due to the YLOD as well), and third incident with them (on the first there was an occasion where I couldn't sign in and Sony told me to clear the hard drive). The fact that Sony haven't fixed the ongoing problem with the YLOD and continue to force the consumers to pay up for their problem is really grinding my gears, as Sony want me to pay £135 for repairs when I can get a brand new Slim 160GB on Amazon for £200 (my console is a 60GB fat).

Considering I already paid more than £350 for my first console, and paid the £135 with the repairs, I feel like dishing out more than £500 just on this issue is unacceptable. Worst thing is that copy of LA Noire I was playing was rented and is now stuck in there. At the minute I can't see myself coughing up £135 for repairs, and if I were going to go down that route I'd prefer to get a new one at less than £70 more.

The other option I was looking into was getting the PS3 repaired. I've found many websites of people willing to repair the console for a fee (about £50-£70), but I was wondering if anyone else has had dealings with such people. I only ask because I'm wary on paying the money to find within two months or something my PS3 is having the same issues. Feedback on any service is appreciated (especially if it's in North East, England). Ones I've found are:

I used console doctor a couple years ago for my launch PS3 phat. They give a 6 month guarantee. It got YLOD after 5 months so I took it back the guy said the fix is just a tempary fix and once you've got YLOD your machine is pretty much destined to get it again, they fixed it free of charge because it was still under their 6 month guarantee and it lasted another 8 month before getting YLOD again after that I bought a slim

Wow... you make it sound like Sony has a design flaw with their console. That is not the case buddy. When it comes to any piece of computer-like electronics, there is no way to safeguard against the possibility of overheating. The compound chemical used in conjunction with the heat sinks of the PS3 can only last so long before drying up enough to allow the motherboard soder to melt slightly and lose contact. You are making it sound like the Xbox360 design flaw where the actual hardware fails for completely different reasons and they ignored it for nearly 3 years.

The only way that Sony could "fix the issue" is to incorporate some type of liquid nitrogen based colling system into it. Do you care to pay for that type of design integration? I doubt that it would have anywhere near a $299 price tag.

Why don't you fix it yourself? I did and got another 4 months out of it. That would give you plenty of time to at least do a data transfer between the old PS3 and a new Slim PS3 so you can have all of your save game data without fear of copy-protection loss.
