Question 3.66 update blu-killer

Searched around google and places, found some dead ends.
After updating 3.66 I cannot watch ANY blu-rays, I have a 120GB slim bought 02/2010. Is there any trick to repairing this that I am missing? I have done a system restore and still no go (it's connected with hdmi). Maybe another system wipe I don't know about? I really don't care about losing memory at this point, I just want the basics operational, Blu-Ray / Games.
I know I have read about other people with the same problems, just no resolutions.
please Obi-Wan...

Chances are it's not related to 3.66, just a coincidence that it stopped working after the update.
I haven't heard much about BD drives failing on the slim but I'm sure it's possible. Are you getting any error messages? What is the system doing (freezing, etc)? Make sure you're testing with equipment that works (isolate so the problem isn't something like cables/tv/media/etc).

I did get an error message, the code I cannot recall. All system connections are good and working. The menus work like normal it's just when I put in a Blu-movie it doesn't show up under the video icon. after 10 sec. or so it sounds like it wants to eject or it re-inserts? sometimes I get the error code sometimes not?
I have read other posts of slim owners getting the same symptoms.

Sounds like a hardware failure. Try calling Sony support, they will ask you to restore the system first probably so you can try that now if you want. I think it's under "Settings -> System Settings". Note you will lose all data on the system if you do this. It basically resets it to when a brand new system.

I had the same exact issue with my "fat" PS3. No workaround or fix worked for me, I had to send it to Sony for repair.

I assume you had to pay for it?

If it's out of warranty you will. You do have the option of trying to fix it yourself though. Probably a BD drive replacement guide for slim PS3's floating around the web. You'd better make sure to diagnose the problem correctly first though.

I have done this to no prosper, but I will again attempt this.
Thanks for the response Rike, SDon. Seems like
A: the laser needs replaced
B: system needs a fixed update
C: send the unit in to Sony for a fix at my cost (for a unit owned for a year just past warranty to $h!t the bed). Also for another chance on the next update to become a repeat customer.
I thought the auto industry had this cornered, thanks Sony I didn't hack or cheat the system but it looks like I may have to.

It's just a coincidence that your hardware failed after the update. It's frustrating when things break, but it happens.

Hopefully the cost of repairs have dropped since the PS3 is cheaper now (unlikely).

Is the Sony warranty only good for 1 year or maybe 2?

1 year unless you bought an extension.

Angry

Ouch, now to contemplate if I want to fix this or save up for the Oppo 93.
I favor the Oppo.
Such a shame too I really enjoyed the PS3, even told people to buy 1 for a standard Blu-ray player with all the perks. I shoul've learned from the PS2 crash that you cannot have a game system from Sony without repeat purchases.
aaa AAa aaAAAlrighty then...

Thanks again Rike, I'm off to see the wizard.

So if you pay to have Sony fix a broken PS3, can you also pay for the extended 2 year warranty when you get it back (since it under warranty for like... 90 days aftera repair)?

Well my 2.5 year old 160gb fat ps3 died all of a sudden. We were watching HP6 and it froze and eventually gave error 80029906. Tried a game and got error 80010514. Tried doing system restore, no luck. Guess it's off to Sony repair and $160 later I'll be good to go.

Default PS3 dying?

I have an 80GB PS3 (the last model with Backwards Compatibility) with a 640 GB samsung hard drive. Today I was playing Transformers: War for Cybertron when the PS3 suddenly turned off and beeped a couple times (flashing red light).

The disc was still in at the time but after a few minutes of letting it sit I turned on the ps3 and it stayed on long enough for me to get the disc out before doing the flashing red light again. Recently synced my trophies before this happened so I'm not concerned about that.

What I am concerned about is if this is the start of the YLOD? Any advice and insight on this would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds very similar to what happened to my 40GB model. I had that happen a few times and then eventually it would just go straight to the beeping and flashing red light. I found someone who could fix it for $30, then I sold it to a coworker and bought a new slim model. He tells me it's still working great about 6 months later. If I were you, I would start looking for someone who can fix it if you want to keep the backward compatibility.

That does sound like YLOD, yup. If you can get it running again, I would immediately do a system backup of the hard drive and prepare to replace the unit ASAP (and look into investing in a PS2 if there are still games that you want to play).

Thing is I haven't used the backwards compatability at all. I don't have any ps2 games (partly because I have enough ps3 games that I want to play and/or hoping for some ps2 games to get a HD remake release like Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2)

Haven't been successful yet in getting running again but I do have a back up from a few months ago and all the save data of the games I've played since that back up I don't mind having lost.

So it looks like I might be buying a new slim and possibly a standalone blu-ray player so reduce wear and tear on the ps3 disc drive (which probably produces a good amount of the heat anyways).

Few questions:

1) Do the new slims stay significantly cooler compared to the older ps3s?

2) Can I take my backup from a few months ago and transfer it onto the new slim?

3) Will my hard drive fit into the slim models?

4) Is is possible just to put my hard drive into a slim and have everything instead of having to do a transfer?

call sony they will repair and/or replace it for $99 (including shipping). if you havent opened the case yet, dont. they may replace your unit for free. at least thats what i was offered.

if u should get it working again i would deactivate it from the XMB bar.

in most cases i think they send a replacement to you as opposed to repairing the same unit.

and i would call sony and speak to customer service not tech support.
