I can get it to start, it just get's hung during the sparkles with no XMB present. I've tried the system restore by going through those steps and had it working for a day or so until my son was watching NetFlix and it just stopped. Then, on reboot it seems to be stuck at sparkles like it is missing information to load the XMB. After another reformat it is still doing the same thing. Bad hard drive?

Default My PS3 has YLOD with a rented movie inside

Hello all,

My predicament is this. I placed a rented movie in my ps3, and it got the yellow light of death while watching the movie. From what I've researched, it will cost $150 to repair the PS3. I've attempted to eject the disc by some of what i read online but it hasn't worked. I have not yet attempted to open up the PS3 to get the disc because I wasn't sure if I should.

I've had the ps3 for 4 years so I'm guessing it's no longer under warranty.

Should I...

A) Send the ps3 in for repair or

B) open the ps3 with screwdriver to get the disc out, then buy a new ps3

I'm thinking that option A will cost me $150 (fix ps3) + $30 (cost of movie), whereas a new ps3 is only $250.

What do you all think? Please feel free to let me know if there is anything I have not considered.

If this is a phat you can send it to Sony and get a refurb slim for $100. As for the disc try the blow dryer trick too see if it turns on enough to eject the disc, just google ps3 yellow light blow dryer trick or something like that.

This!

Edit: Just saw you posted you had an original 60gb phat...yeah I would say you probably got your money's worth! If that helps ease your mind on a new purchase. In any event, best of luck!

Does anyone know if Gamestop will take my non working PS3? If I can trade it in for a new one, it might help offset the cost of having to eat the cost of this movie.

last time I traded in a console was an original Xbox, and the folks at gamestop hooked it up to make sure it still ran. This was many years ago though, so I'm not sure if their policy is still the same...

Last i heard is they do take broken systems. I checked with them back when my 60GB had the same problem and they were going to give me $115 but they didn't take it because it was the Japanese PS3. I would go with option B by the way.

When I had the YLOD, I used a trick I found online to get the disc out. Turn the power switch off on the back, then hold down the eject button when you turn the switch back on. It worked like a charm for me.

I'm surprised no one has asked you this, but...

What movie were you watching?

I cant recommend sending a fat 60 GB PS3 in for repair. I've done that twice, both times the refurbished 60GB broke within months with the yellow light.

There is a yellow light fix for the 60 GB you can do at home. All it requires is a $25 heat gun from Lowes/Home Depot and $5-10 thermal paste. Chances of it fixing the yellow light is high, but how long it stays fixed is random. For me the fix only lasted 1 week every time I fixed it, but others have reported 6 months or more between yellow light breaks.

Also, be careful when opening the bluray drive. Doing so can offset the calibration and its a chore to calibrate the gears again. Also be gentle with the bluray drive ribbon where it connects to the motherboard. That tab is easy to break.

My suggestion is to get a new slim PS3. The 60GBs are flawed ticking time bombs

I sent my fat PS3 in for repair (YLOD) 6 months ago, and it died again today. I'm just going to buy a third PS3. Nothing wrong with backups!

PS3 is like $200 brand new these days....

Black Friday and Xmas are around the corner...I expect them on sale....

don't spend $150 to fix it...bad choice.

Fix the old unit, buy a new one, then use the data transfer utility and all will resume back to normal. I sent my first PS3 in for repair and it died on the 91st day because of a manufacturing defect. The blu-ray drive logic board was touching the motherboard and got singed.

Gamestop does accept defective game systems, games, accessories, and so on. But keep in mind that you will get less store credit for it than what the normal amount would be because Gamestop does use their own money to fix them in a special warehouse they have since they don't fix it there at the store, and when you trade it in, it becomes their property. and may end up in a whole different store location when it's fixed.

If it's out of warranty, I'd first try opening your PS3 up. There are some videos on youtube that show you how to do it. You need a special tool to unscew a few of the screws as well.

They're called Tamper-proof Torx bits. You need one of the smaller ones. The rest of the screws are just regular philips head screws.
