do not open the unit up and try to fix it, i had a YLOD of death about 6 mos ago on a fat 40 and the girl in customer service at Sony told me she would have replaced my ps3 for free, including shipping had i not opened it up. i know this may be YMMV but its worth calling them before u break the seal.
otherwise, they offered me $99 to have it repaired and they would likely send me a refurbish unit. still considering this so i can have a backup ps3. since i purchased a new one recently. ***when u call make sure u tell the CS rep that u have done a lot of reading on the internet and the failure rate is quite ridiculous and u spent a lot of money on it and are very disappointed*** i work on pc's myself and i was shocked at the lack of thermal paste on the processor and where it connects to the system board. it looked like dried milk and that is insane. the lack of thermal paste is the main reason they are overheating and the processor over time melts away from the board. it wouldnt be a bad idea to open it up and at least put thermal paste on the processor. its not a matter of if it (YLOD) happens, it will happen. i initially tried the easy repair and it worked for a day or so. i believe mine needs a reballing. and that is something im not willing to do, but who knows maybe it would be a good learning experience ![]() Last edited by dwane5; 10-29-2011 at 07:57 PM. |

Darn you raginranger! I was feeling all sorry for you but your bad luck has found me too! Was right in the middle of playing with the Playstation Move controllers for the first time when my original 60GB PS3 crashed! I blame you! :P kidding...
I'm going to get myself a new slim and see if I can't fix the old one long enough to transfer the files over. Will be a pain in my backside to download everything again if I can't get the old one back up and running. ![]() ![]() |

I had a 60G fat PS3 that I got the YLOD on about a year ago. I still have it and the BD drive worked fine. I'll part it out if you need the drive itself, PM me if interested.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I decided to buy a new 160 gb PS3 yesterday at gamestop. They said they would not take the old ps3 for store credit if it had YLOD- just FYI. I also got the gamestop warranty- it is probably a waste of money but it was only $30 and it gives me some piece of mind.
The guy did say that some people online will pay tons of money for a 60GB because of the backwards compatibility. He said that it needs to be fixed first, and that you can find people that are Sony-certified to do this but don't work for Sony. Does anyone know anything about this? Sounds kind of sketchy to me, but if there's any way I can recoup some of the $$ I just spent on the new PS3, that'd be great. p.s. I was not watching Twilight. I rented Bridesmaids and it was pretty dang hillarious. |

But being the 60 is backward compatible, someone will want it. Especially if its the first gen that had the hardware for backward compatibility. |

I fixed mine with the heat gun and thermal paste trick and got it to work for about 2 months. Unfortunately it ended up dieing on me again over the weekend... Luckily when it died the 1st time I ran out and got a slim. It was great for a while having 2 PS3's in the house, especially for the streaming.

Is it nessecery?
Im having trouble with some of my PS3 games. They work fine when new but after a while they start getting glitchy then crashing, freezing and eventually wont even start up. I notice on the disc itself lines start appearing and could only describe them as spokes , like spokes of a wheel leading outwards from the disc. They arent scratches they wipe off with a microfyber cloth which seems to help. but what could be causing it? ![]() I was thinking maybe i need one of those cleaning discs ![]() Any advice would be greatly appreciated Cheers Last edited by Bageara; 11-07-2011 at 05:28 PM. |

Currently, Sony will take the Phat models and give you a new 160GB Slim for $100.
I would NEVER open my PS3 so long as they have a great program like that. People who thew the old units out and bought a slim just didn't look into it. They could have saved half the cost. My 60GB lasted almost 3 years but since I had a extended warranty I got it replaced near the 3 year mark for free. The unit they sent is still working today and I use the bejeezus out of it and so do my kids. The idea they send out "lemons" is not true. (At least in my experience.) -Brian |

http://community.eu.playstation.com/...n/td-p/6086723 I did this once as my PS3 had trouble reading certain discs. It didn't fix my PS3 reading discs as it is a fault with the reader but apparently it fixes any corrupt data. |

Tried it but the corrupt data is still in my Game Utility. I might completely reformat my HDD. |

Killzone 3 Resistance 3 Uncharted 3 Little Big Planet 2 It seems to be with recent PS exclusive games as I've recently just got BF3 and MW3 and both work straight away. ![]() I'm going to get another PS3 over xmas and I'll move this one into the bedroom. I may end up getting a new reader for it someday but for now it does work in some way or other ![]() |
