This sound like static problems. So you beleive he started having problems after vacuuming it, static shocks. The vacuum cleaner might have introduced a static shock through the vents therefore. Possibly frying a part. Like how you need to ground yourself before touching the inside of a computer or PC parts.

I'm curious for those PS3 that failed within 1-2 years, do you guys maintain it regularly like clean the vents, dust it off...etc? And also, what is the amount of usage you guys play the PS3? Another irony is it is a Sony product which in my experience is built to last. I still have my Sony CRT TV built in 1992 and it is still working!

My PS3 died earlier this week as well. I have a 60GB unit that just powered off while in the middle of playback. I've replaced the ac cord and obviously tried different outlets but it will no longer power on.
I do have a question though if anyone knows the answer I would appreciate the information. Would it be possible to remove my hard drive, and place it into another PS3 to back up my files, or do I just need to hope that nothing happens to my hard drive information when I send it out for repair? |

alright I found it lol here it is. Heres the link http://asia.cnet.com/digitalliving/t...2032875,00.htm
"The first step to replacing the harddisk is going to the store or visiting an online retailer to pick up a new harddisk. The PS3 is compatible with just about any 2.5-inch SATA notebook harddisk. The physical size of the harddisk is important because it has to fit the PS3's 2.5-inch drive tray. As far as storage capacity goes, it doesn't make sense to go through the trouble of upgrading unless you go big: We're talking 250GB, 320GB, 500GB or even 1TB. Once you have your upgrade drive, the next step is to backup the data on your current PS3 hard drive to an external storage unit. You can skip this step if you aren't attached to your music, videos, and game saves, but most of us will probably want to save all that information. The PS3 has a built-in software backup utility that can copy the PS3's hard drive contents to an external storage device, such as a USB thumb drive or a Memory Stick. The removable storage device must use the FAT32 file system in order for the PS3 to recognize it. If you have an external hard drive that's formatted in NTFS, you can use the Disk Management utility in Windows to reformat the drive, but you'll need to create partitions on large external hard drives because Windows can do only FAT32 on drives 32GB or smaller." |

The ONLY downside is this: at worst, you'll pay US$150 for Sony to fix it or US$400 to buy a brand new PS3. With that in mind - that you are probably going to pay for fixes or a new PS3 anyway - look at the DIY-fixit as some exciting adventure you've never done before. Instead of doom and gloom, you will be learning something about the console. fuad |
