Hello everyone
I don't know if you remember me but I posted a way long time ago about how I replaced my laser but still the ps3 wouldn't read any discs at all. Well I finally got a replacement laser in from yallstore (took like 2 months.. jesus) and on install I am happy to announce that I have been able to successfully get the ps3 to play a DVD movie. However, when I put in MGS4 (the only game I have to test the ps3 with), the ps3 just sits at a black screen indefinitely. It definitely reads the game as a game though, I can see Metal Gear Solid 4 pop up on the screen real quick before it automatically tries to load it and then goes to a black screen. When it goes to the black screen I can hear it spin up, and then I hear some sort of grinding noise, and then I hear the disc stop spinning. I'm pretty sure it doesn't spin up anymore after that. Furthermore, sometimes the ps3 doesn't want to eject discs. If I were to quit game from the black screen when its trying to load MGS4 and go back to the XMB, I am not able to eject the disc. I have to restart the ps3 and hit eject right away to get the disc out. Also, sometimes the ps3 won't read the dvd.. I'll put it in, hear a slight grinding noise and then nothing happens. I won't be able to eject the disc unless I restart the machine and hit the eject button a bunch. Other times the dvd plays perfectly. I have checked the drive with MarineMike's blu ray video demonstration of an operational machine and it seems to be all in order. I'm currently doing a full system restore right now hoping that its just a software issue but any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Oh one more thing: I'm not sure if its just my imagination or not, and it has been a while since I had powered it on since I had been waiting for 2 months to get my new laser in, but it seems like I have to push the disc in a little harder/further than I used to before the drive automatically started to accept the disc. Could just be my imagination but if any of these things are a flag for someone about a problem I may have then please let me know. Last edited by misterkiem; 05-21-2009 at 08:16 PM. |

Nevermind I just got it working. The problem was that I didn't leave enough slack for the cable that connected to the actual laser lens, some of it was caught on the controller chip side of the drive. So it was trying to move around to read the disc but was restricted by the short cable. I fixed it (accidentally) by popping open the drive and just sliding the laser unit by hand all the way back, thereby pulling the extra cable needed and leaving enough slack.

And I mean everything??? this isnt normal is it? trying to do wirless connection test everything freezes. Upon turning on it searches and searches for PS network and tries to sign in but then freezes. Then while going from in game to the home screen by using the middle button it will freeze and then come back after 3-5 minutes. Seriously I have restarted this thing 20 times in just under the 3 days I have had it! Should I box it back up and take the drive back to best buy?! I've never cursed so much in my entire life. None of the internet connection stuff has anything to do with it as I have been able to use my Ipod touch the entire time of all this crap! its an 80gb..... 3 days old! Already did a master restore and had to re set up everything! Now all of a sudden its magically not freezing? What gives? First thing I did when I got online the other day was run the update that was out...... any ideas?

Yep it's the laser, unfortunately I have a good amount of experience with that same problem. And the warranty Sony gives you is only a year. So you'll have to open it up yourself.

Sounds like its timing out using the wireless, just hardwire it, and see if it still happens, that or your internet is slow...

Well I took the PS3 back to best buy and had to give them the full report on what it was doing just inorder to try and get an exchange. The geek ____ <- insert what ever word here, told me I needed to try and duplicate what was going on, and I was like its hit or miss and only happens in weird spots and wouldnt be able to duplicate it. He then followed up with the well I dont really see anything wrong with it im not sure if they will exchange it or what they are going to do now. I said that, they better exchange it or ill take a full refund for it (3 days old on the BB 30 day war. policy) and walk across the street to target and buy it there. Things changed pretty quick after that, I pulled another one off the shelf and gave it alittle shake to make sure nothing sounded weird. Good to go. Got home set it all up, no freezing as of yet and figured out my stupid internet connection problem. I followed these directions:
don't kow what ports you have opened, however you should try this : Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case... On the set-up tab change the MTU Size to 1452 and click Save Settings... Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forwarding" subtab...If you have enabled any application uncheck the enable box for all the applications and do the following : Â 1) In Application box type in Play Station, in the start box type in 80 and End box type in 11000, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box and click on Save Settings...Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings... 2) Now assign the given ip address on your PlayStation ip address :- 192.168.1.20, subnet mask :- 255.255.255.0, default gateway :- 192.168.1.1... 3) Also assign the dns addresses on the PlayStation Primary dns :- 4.2.2.2...Secondary dns :- 192.168.1.1 4) Turn off your modem, router, and PlayStation...Wait for a minute... 5) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the PlayStation and test it... Followed the directions and the network stays live the entire time, no problems with it now! We'll see how long this last |
